This is a reminder that DiPolarDisorder is a shitposting troll who intentionally spreads factually incorrect misinformation such as "hrtf graphs have an inverse relationship with how a headphone should measure" and refuses to back up his claims with credible evidence because he cannot. His HRTF claim has been thoroughly debunked by:

It's the natural order of things, to much shitposting, shilling and/or bashing always result in a reaction of equal amounts of shitposting.
Imho it's a good thing, it clears things a little, people start suggesting more options to newcomers and for a while the thread produces debates with more depth.

This too is bound to end for a new shitposting cicle to begin, and so on.

Except it isn't. First of all portapros are garbage for portable use because they leak sound like shit. Other than that the sound is overall mediocre as fuck, too much bass and basically no soundstage.
I have portamemes and have had pair since they were actually considered good on /g/. It's a massdrop headphone. It's much cheaper than any equivalent headphone while offering the same performance and even better build quality, but you've gotta wait a long time to get it after you order. That being said, you'll be saving $80-100.

It's very sensitive, low impedence, planar magnetic and it measures beautifully. Honestly I'm very excited for this drop, and you should be too.

You lovely people recommended me the 681 EVO's years ago and they did their job but recently fell apart after heavy use. I want to upgrade to something with better sound and build quality now.

After reading through the thread and associated links I have my eye on the Philips SHP9500S to replace them. Are there better headphones for the price or should I just pull the trigger?
>>
>>61684562
The SHP9500S and HD 558s are probably the best choices for the price. Both are neutral headphones, but the 9500S side more to the bright, while the 558s side more to the dark. I'd personally choose the 9500S over the 558s if you don't mind the slight treble grain at higher volumes. Depends on what you like, desu.
>>
>>61684562
>Are there better headphones for the price
Arguably HD558 for a little more since they have replaceable earpads. The SHP9500S err from neutrality slightly on the side of brightness and the HD558 err from neutrality slightly on the side of darkness. Both are excellent values.
>>
>>61684562

>>
>>61684562
>I want to upgrade to something with better sound and build quality now.
get a bigger budget then

The Philips is also a disposable headphone. Earpads can't be replaced, at least not practically, because they're fucking glued on. It's retarded design choice when they've gone through all the trouble to give it detachable cables in the first place.

easily replaceable earpads and cables should always be a necessity with headphones unless they're meant to be cheap and disposable.
>>
>>61684785
Unfortunately my budget is taken up by other things and I don't have much disposable income.

For 50 USD if these things last at least 5 years that will be good enough for me. Hopefully money is less tight in the future and I'll have a bigger budget to drop on an expensive pair of headphones.

Thank you everyone for the input.
>>
Would it be a good idea to just go Magni 2 -> computer line out via an RCA to 3.5mm cable, or is getting a dac together with it worth it? I don't think I've ever noticed static noise.
>>
>>61684785
not him, but what are the cheapest headphones with replacable pads/cable that /hpg/ would recommend?
>>
>>61685016
Go ahead and connect. After, when you turn your amp up all the way while not playing any music, listen carefully. If you hear noise, you need a dac. Dacs can be had cheap. For about $60 you can get a hifime 9018 dac which is super accurate and has 2V line out. I prefer the optical version because isolation.

unironically, HD600 but OEM replaceable parts are expensive because money.

The equivalent with AKG is the K702, replaceable cable and earpads, but the earpads have that weird propriety swivel thing (pic related) so aftermarket is incredibly limited. OEM is not readily available either. K612 has attached cables so no point talking about that.

Beyerdynamic equivalent (DT880 or DT990) also has attached cables.

oh and I guess there's Sennheiser's HD5xx series but I'm not very familiar with those. HD558 is probably good. Problem is, I'm not sure about the longevity of these models since Sennheiser keeps revising them, while in comparison the HD600/650 has been out for two decades.

HD 558s. They feel a bit cheap but should last awhile. SHP9500 feels better, but the pads are non-replaceable unless if you want to do some ghetto mods. After years of reading this general I'm convinced I'm either seriously deaf or retarded. You've all shit on the DT990 so hard and for so long I'm looking for things I'm either doing right or wrong as justifications for me liking them so much.
I think the fact that I can drive them right, as they sound screechy and horrible on the dragonfly, and only really listen to Trance(ASOT) is having an affect. I know I can hear up to 20khz if my little sinewave/frequency generator software isn't lying to me.
I've had them for 4 years and prefer them to the Sony XBA-H1, Takstar Pro 80(hyperx cloud), ath-m50 and m50x, senn hd201, and various cheap shit earphones/apple earpods.
If they're really so fucking bad wouldn't a $100 pair of IEMs like the XBA-H1 just blow them away by virtue of not having the horrible treble spike?

Would the fostex thx00(or whatever headphone that's a version of) be a good upgrade for someone who DOES like the dt990?
I think it's the treble/upper mids(female vocals) like I love on them as they just sound so great. I know the mids are "recessed" on the dt990 but to me it sounds like the vocals are always "infront" of the instruments and I love that. While the music I listen it driven by the bass I don't particularly give a shit about it as opposed to the female vocals massaging my ear drums.
Seems like the thx00 is a really sweet sounding headphone with really high quality bass and I'm looking to upgrade to a ~400 dollar headphone in the fall.

From what I've heard it's a v shaped headphone with a -huge- emphasis on bass, if you're after female vocals over everything else you could definitely find something better, especially since it's mostly closed.
An open headphone with an emphasis on treble might be better, you could look into grado and the ath ad x00 lineup as I've heard they emphasize treble and upper mids. As is usual though, it's best to listen before you buy, and buy used if possible.

It's so hard to know exactly what you want when you can't try out headphones. I realize that the sony xba-h1, dt990, ath-m50 are all bass cannons and I like all of them but I don't feel like I like them for the bass. I've heard about the audio technica art monitor line but there are so fucking many of them. Any specific models I should check out?
$400 is gonna be a huge stretch for me that I'm not even 100% convinced I'm gonna spend yet so that's the upper end of my budget. I'm in the US of course and will be driving it off the fx audio dac-x6 or dragonfly black(if it can do it)
>>
>>61689253
>Any specific models I should check out?
Most people talk about the 900x and 2000x in the lineup. Just try to search for open headphones with a emphasis in the upper midrange and treble and you'll probably get what you're after.
>>
>>61689294
Is there a difference between emphassis, how loud the frequency is on the graph, and QUALITY of a specific frequency in a headphone?

I've heard people distinguish between bass quantity and quality quite often but does the same apply to treble?
>>
>>61689321
>does the same apply to treble?
Yes, although I guess you'd have to rely on reviews to find out which treble emphasized headphones do it well and which ones don't. Too much treble can sometimes cause sibilance as well

I want a higher end v shaped headphone that excels at modern music(so fast music, something i've heard armature is good at) and has really good female vocals.
From what I've read here I should check out the open back audio technicas and grado but now I'm thinking about others too, maybe even an IEM.

>I am actually open to an hd600 but it's suggested 24/7 here,
Yes, it is. And it's not a bad suggestion. It's a headphone to seriously consider.
Consider means not just ordering it because somebody on 4chan says so, but researching and possibly making an informed purchase of.

I have these speakers but don't have a amp or stereo to connect it with. I'm going to order a Lepai LP-2020A+ amp or a Nobsound mini amp. Is there anything better? I'm on a tight budget and I don't want to spend more. This is what it says on the back of the speaker Model: LXS-330, Impedance 6 Ohm, Max Power 60W, Freq range 80 ~ 20 KHz, S.P.L. 87 db/W(1m).

>I know the mids are "recessed" on the dt990 but to me it sounds like the vocals are always "infront"
DT990 has more upper midrange than most people might think. Should have more emphasis than other Beyer sets besides the DT250 and the T90.
>I went to such lengths in this repost of the request to point out what I like in songs, and yes the dt990 is good at enhancing those parts of the songs but that's the limit of my knowledge as to what I want in a headphone.
If you don't mind big 9-10kHz treble peaks, you may as well consider the Beyer T90. The peak is larger than the DT990, which is already somewhat divisive.

>>61689365
Sibilants are consonants that you sound out by blowing through your teeth. They have the characteristic of sharp noisy bursts concentrated around a particular range in the higher frequencies, generally somewhere around 4-10kHz.
If you said a headphone had the characteristic of sibilance, it should have a narrow spike in the higher frequencies. Given the acoustics of small spaces, this is what is usually meant by "emphasized treble": sharp treble.

>>61689321
>Is there a difference between emphassis, how loud the frequency is on the graph, and QUALITY of a specific frequency in a headphone?
In jargon-speak, the headphone graphs you see are the normalized magnitude of the headphone's transfer function.
In simpler language, it represents how loud the headphone gets when you put in a steady voltage. By normalizing, we remove references to a specific voltage so that it only tells us frequency ranges the headphone system makes louder than others. In general, sharp peaks are not desirable.

Most people don't look too closely at graphs or listen too closely to the quality of the peaks.
Emphasis would refer to frequency regions that are on average boosted (apply smoothing function and look for broad rises).
Quality is a subjective result. It would be determined mostly by the linear frequency response and less so by non-linear distortions.

Tell us what you want faglord. K712 has decent bass, good soundstage and airy but not as peaky trebble, due to the gain before spike. HD600 is superb for vocals esp female ones due to the lower treble/upper midrange gain, HD650 for a bit more bass and less of that gain. Etymotic are decent as well and also have that HD600 gain, there are 2 versions also afaik another with bit more bass. If you can order from Amazon and use their return policy. Didn't really try high end ATH.
>>
>>61692528
>>61691078
Ok, you might like DT880 or Fostexx massdrop versions. They drop semi frequently and have varied FR, more V shaped less V shaped. To intrepritate spike it is important to also see how it lines up with the rest of the frequency, if it's more or less flat and then a spike, the spike will be very prominent, if there is a visible spike but lets say, most V shape, there is a significant gain in bass than the spike is not going to be that bad as long as you don't listen too loud, you shouldn't for a loner times to avoid hearing loss, then spike won't stand out as much but mids, vocals, will sound muffled.

>nobody does headphone measurements for noncoherent distortion and multitone distortion

Fuck this gay hobby.
>>
>>61692678
As in the proposal from Listen Inc.?
I take it that this is one of those 4chan jokes you people come up with.
>>
>>61692853
RAA does it for amps and DACs but nobody does it for headphones.
>>
>>61692869
The point of a modulation test is to reveal time-varying distortions that a harmonic test would not indicate, not cover the chart in mess of tones. So, what are we doing with multitone tests?

From memory, noncoherence test should be in a similar line as the old masker tests Fraunhofer used to do. Can be used with any signal, even music. A key problem of NCD is SNR, particularly for acoustic measurements.
Does RAA even do NCD?

Plantronics gamecom 780, the digital surround sucked and the cable got torn (put out the sound card and wired a new one directly to the drivers) and they start to hurt my ears after some time, the sound is ok, and i like the soundstage too.

hey man suprised you're still around, doesn't seem like many people stick around generals that long.
I have money coming in once again and I do this with everything even if it's not broken. I'll spend all day looking at mice because one might be more comfortable than mine even though mine is fine. Same with computer hardware, games, everything really.
It's just what I do so I'm probably going to order something new and if I hate it well I'll return it. Nothing better to do with my time right now anyway.

But just because I like them doesn't mean there isn't an upgrade I will like even more. I really enjoy them in the context of their price(which was $130 this time around) and getting another pair of headphones doesn't mean I'm selling my 990s. I'm just hoping for something I'll enjoy more or maybe even just in a different way. Sometimes I still listen to my Sony IEMs at home because I love how fast and punchy the bass sounds in some songs even though the vocals are a tad muddy.
Good to have a variety

very carefully

>>61697304
It'd probably work better with CP100 tips as the 800 works better with thinner stemmed IEM's like Etymotic/Shure IEM's thus have a smaller hole to insert the tips onto the stem. You could also try JVC Spiral Dot tips.

Must haves:

>Long, braided cable
>Decent enough sound quality
