Where do you buy similiar stickers but in a smaller version? Just a small enough to fit well on the palm rest of a T6x
>>
I just recently bought a simple laptop for indie pixel games, browsing and streaming.

Here it is. Got it for $504 total with tax. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-2-in-1-15-6-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-256gb-solid-state-drive-silver/5823026.p?skuId=5823026

How'd I do.
>>
Are any of the ThinkPad laptops suitable for video editing?
>>
>>61677723
Amateur editing? Sure. T420 or later/more powerful in same gen with dedicated graphics.

Professional? Better have a more accurate monitor.
>>
>>61676366
HEY FAG,

next time include a link in the old thread to the new one.

Recently combined 2 thinkpad T420's. One was a base model but in mint condition. The other had much better specs, but was work and beat to shit. Anyhow, I swapped over the i7-2620m (2c/4t). Applied IC diamond thermal paste, properly reseated and tightened down the heatsink (X pattern until bottomed out)

Yet my CPU idles at 68-72C. Mid 90s under moderate load. Is it possible I added too much paste? (Size of a large pea) I'm used to desktop chips and graphics cards. Been a while since I re-pasted a laptop chip, so it's possible.

If all else fails, I'll break down both laptops AGAIN and steal the cooling assembly out of the old T420 because that one worked fine. Anything I may be missing that'd lead to high temps like this? Appreciate any help here /g/ents.
>>
>>61677760
No
>>
>>61677723
>>61677751

Modern Thinkpads have excellent screens.
And most importantly: matte.

A tricked out P71 is probably the best laptop for video editing money can buy.
But a more reasonably configured P50 or P51 is great too.

Putting "too much" paste might increase the temps by a degree or two. Something else is the problem.
>>
>>61678050
Then what on Earth could it be? I'm still going to double and triple check everything.

I also made sure to set Windows processor power management to active so the fan will ramp up.
>>
>>61678117
That high idle temp makes me think the heatsink isn't making proper contact with the CPU. I would take it apart and re-apply the paste etc.

Waiting for a new "-120" Hydis display, display bezel, palmrest, and Nip keyboard for my Librebooted X200! It'll be all shiny on the inside when it's all together!

All shipping from China, though. I'll be waiting a few weeks.
>>
>>61677796
you also should spread the thermal paste over the whole die, since there is no heat spreader like on desktop CPU's

missing the corners of the die far outweigh the tiny bubbles you make from spreading it
>>
Found a new-in-box W530 at work. Was told to make it disappear.

I7-3820QM
32GB DDR3
Quadro K1000M
1920x1080 LCD
180GB SSD (Replaced with a new-in-box 500GB Evo 840 Pro sitting next to it)
9 cell battery
2x 135W AC adapter
Docking station

Not sure what I'm going to use it for yet. Might start playing with docker containers, as my Surface Pro 2 (i5 4200u/8GB/250GB) is feeling resource constrained these days.
>>
>>61677796
The core i3 version of the T420 has a smaller heatsink with aluminum fins instead of copper, so that may be the problem.

>>61678442
Hope you made sure of the exact model display you ordered, the chinks sent me a "compatible" one that was actually from AUO and definitely not IPS.

Later I bought the entire top screen assembly from a Gateway E-155 convertible and that was the right screen (but glossy, and I had to very carefully remove the digitizer).
>>
>>61678484
I just put a small line of the same Diamond stuff he used on my x200, and it idles at ~35°C (40°C sitting on my lap). Didn't spread it or anything, and the heatsink is cool to the touch. If he put a proper amount, putting the heatsink on should flatten it out over the rest of the die.
>>
>>61678484
I see. Ok I'll make sure to manually spread the paste. That's something I didn't do. I figured the contact surface of the sink would spread it for me. That's good info to know that it doesn't. Maybe that's my entire problem.
>>
>>61678509
Thats a fucking awesome deal (free). Hell yea, make that laptop your daily use! Fully specced out W530 will run circles around your surface. Older CPU/GPU or not.
>>
>>61678529
Really? I thought the heatsinks were all the same. This one is copper though I think.
>>
>>61678529
I have the same "-100" display in my closet, I also had to remove the digitizer. I scratched it a little in that process, and the gloss is annoying as shit. They messaged me on Ali asking if my device had a touch sensor and I made it as blatant as possible that "I WANT THE ONE THAT ENDS IN 120! NO DIGITIZER, NO TOUCH PANEL, MATTE FINISH!". Hopefully they send the right one.

I tried doing similar on the t520, and went through destroying my stock of fans/heatsinks. From my experiencing, the heatsink with gpu pad has a different fan connector than the ones without it.

>>61681213
Also, I think older thinkpads have somewhat better panels. The aspect ratio (4:3) make them look very beautiful when running a modern OS. Newer thinkpads have a 16:9 aspect ratio and models with a TN panel have quite bad viewing angles (also in my pic you can see in the right top corner the image is breaking up - thats a typial TN panel). Try to look for thinkpads with an IPS panel and 4:3 or 16:10 aspect ratios with resolutions like 1920x1200 (16:10), 1680x1050 (16:10), 1400x1050 (4:3/5:4) and 1600x1200 (4:3/5:4). Best visuals are achieved on thinkpads that are running a dedicated graphics card (AMD 9600, AMD FIRE GL, and even older Nvida NVS (these are problematic)) And most of all - install a modern OS. How to achieve best visuals on newer thinkpads, I don't know, guess the same receipe as above works for them, too.

Hey /tpg/. Anon here from before who was bitching about high idle/load temps in his T420/i7-2620m.

I repasted the CPU. Used a little less IC Diamond this time around and spread it. Barely. IC Diamond spreads like plastic. Before I was seeing 68-72C on cold boot and idle. Then 95C+ while running simple CPU benches such as cinebench.

Now I'm seeing 39-42C idle and pic related is prime95 Blend test for 25 or so minutes. Cinebench peaks CPU at 75C now. 20C to 25C drop across the board is pretty decent right?

You can swap it into the t520 no problem. The issue with the t420 is the heatsink isn't meant to handle quad core. You could try it as long as you aren't going to the danger zone.

Alternatively, you can flash a t420 with coreboot and run a ivy bridge 35W i7 in it. Not sure how well supported the t420 is, I had bad experience with t520 and coreboot but they may had just been the board.

If you are into gaming and windows tho you might as well get a t520. You can then find a a w520 quadro 2000M motherboard for $100 bucks on ebay and then have a bad ass machine. Or if you want to suffer you can try to make it work with Linux, but lol nvidia.

Got an older T series Thinkpad from the early 2000s, would Tiny Core or Puppy Linux make it usable for the modern web, or at least shitposting? It was a great machine, and I hate to see it go unused.
>>
>>61685451
no, the Intel HD 3000 max is 2 monitors, max resolution being 2560x1600

>>61685464
it might be or might not, how much space are you using right now?
>>
>>61685464
You're probably trolling but in the case you're not the answer is that it depends on what you want to do with it. It's more than enough for any base OS and pretty much any program you would ever want but you will struggle if you want to store any data or modern game.

Yes the 2720qm is the special point before shit goes into housefire mode imo. Also no, you can't use an IPS panel on them unless you do the fhd mod but iirc it's only being sold for the s variant.

Thanks for your answer. Can a x230 (HD 4000) drive 3 monitor then? And if so is there any way to put a HD 4000 in a x220? I heard that coreboot supports Ivy Bridge on x220.

yes X230 / HD 4000 can do 3 monitors BUT I think the third one has to either be the built-in display or through the VGA on the dock. I think, not sure, can't test it.

fair enough, still seems unconvincing. My grandma was a sys admin and had like 8 fucking thinkpads lying around her house. What's the cheapest small (x series) thinkpad that can run League of Legends ? I don't care about settings as long as the game can run in the monitors resolution without dropping below ~30fps
The recommended/minimum specs are outdated, so I'm asking here.

>inb4 hurr assfaggots
I know, but all of my friends play, and its fun to hang out at one another's dorm and play games
>>
>>61686787
T420 can run CSGO on minimum settings, so an x220 should be able to run lol just fine.
>>
>>61686945

>>
>>61686787
Unfortunately, in recent years MOBAs like DOTA and LoL have become more taxing. You will be able to play on an X220 or T420 with all settings set to low at around 30fps with dips during team fights. If you want better performance look at the **40 series or consider a cheap eGPU.

Why is Fujitsu so expensive? I really love some of their designs but their 13" laptops are lower specced and higher priced than even MacBook Pros.
Anyway;
I have a 13.3" 1080p ultraportable 2-1 dell with an i3, 8ggs of rams, and an SSD in it. Really for $550 with upgrades it is a fucking wonderful machine as far as consumer laptops go but I seem to have really underestimated how much screen space I need.
I hate doing any kind of work on it and it causes me to waste an endless amount of time that I could be productive in waiting to get home to my desktop and mechanical keyboard.
I want to go up a screen size to about 15" but retain some portability as I carry it with me ~10 hours a day.
Don't care about GPU, intel u series is sufficient, 1080p or better is a must, 5-6 hour battery with a light desktop load(chrome, spotify, slack, etc).
Which models should I look at on ebay? Open to hp, lenovo, dell, etc.

I dealt with one ThinkPad that was brand new straight from the factory and despite the boot up splash screen saying press the ThinkVantage key it actually just brought you to the recovery thing. Pressing F2 actually brought you into the BIOS.

Later on I wiped and reinstalled everything minus the recovery stuff and then the Thinkvantage key brought me into the BIOS.

Maybe the issue is related, idk

Just got my t430 today, prettty excited, but the temps seem a little out of the ordinary. When running anything slightly demanding (downloading files or playing youtube videos in 1080p) the temps will spike up to 70-76 on the cpu and as high as 79 on the socket. is this normal?
>>
>>61694276
yes those temps are normal, do a stress test and see if the cpu starts throttling, that would not be normal

It only throttled less than 10 mhz, but on the bright side I can boil some water with my motherboard now. Are these temps really okay? They seem like suicide for the components
>>
>>61694443
they are built to do that and it'll shut off if it gets to 'dangerous' temperatures
high temps increase wear but that's natural
>>
>>61694443
make sure you run cpu and gpu stress test
my t430 throttles to its minimum clock speed (1.2ghz) when I stress the cpu and gpu
retarded thing throttles worse than any mac I've tested
>>
>>61694516
that's not normal, the heatsink and fan should be able to handle it
>>
>>61694634
it doesn't
I've re thermal pasted about 5 times, and I've tried 2 different heatsinks
it's just chinkpad design
>>

>>
>>61694443
after stress testing, nothing throttled so im guessing it's all good, thanks for the help

>tfw cannot get rid of the urge to buy more thinkpads and start a collection
>>
>>61694683
it does
I'm guessing you didn't replace the thermal pad on the chipset or you tried putting thermal paste on it instead, you aren't supposed to do that, you need to replace it with a thermal pad of proper thickness

>>61694783
very few parts are compatible between the tablet and non-tablet
>>
>>61694871
the main heatsink isn't connected to the chipset, only the cpu and gpu
and both of those use thermal paste
the gpu doesn't throttle, it's just the cpu that throttles

I have an x220 Tablet with a missing keyboard and touchpad (and other random plastic bezel parts around those areas). I'm looking for replacement parts but I'm assuming parts for the tablet variant are rarer and more expensive than parts for the regular x220. Which parts are compatible between the two units. The T420 I purchased from eBay just arrived in the mail, but I just realised that I lost my precision screwdriver set at some point when I was moving. Can't get another set for two days. I find myself aftaid to even turn the damn thing on without taking it apart first. For all I know the thermal paste was never changed and it hasn't ever been cleaned once. What is the actual likelihood that I'm going to damage the laptop using it for two days while uncertain as to its condition? I can't tell if I'm being reasonable or unhealthily paranoid.

>>
>>61696427

>>
>>61697917
Unsure if sarcasm, you're up to speed, the system boots, it runs, one spot on the back of the LCD gets a little warm after a while, not sure if that's normal or if the solder might be transferring too much power

Should I scrap the board and buy a new one? They're like $20, on the other hand I have one that works mounted in the case

What do?
>>
>>61697949

Should be fine as long as you use electronic solder.

Trying to make this upgrade in my Thinkstation E30 with the stock psu.

The lenovo website says only the P300 series is compatible.

Its drawing the same amount of power as my 600 and has the same connection type, with low profile design.
