I just played the PSVR and Rift at best buy - surprisingly, I feel like the PSVR had better quality. The shooting-bugs game was more fun and immersive than the demos I played on the Rift.
>>
>>61648582
The game you played, Farpoint, is indeed one of the best crafted VR titles out there especially because it uses a specialized gun peripheral. But it's also pretty much the only game using it that's actually high quality. Arizona Sunshine is another that uses the Aim controller but it's not as good of a game.

You probably missed out a lot on what PC VR offers by trying the Best Buy setup.

Yeah SteamVR kind of behaves weirdly like that. Don't worry about it. It's still beta. Valve will fix it some time probably.

I bought touch controllers at best buy because Amazon was taking forever. But Amazon says they can't cancel my unshipped order. Do I keep both and set up a 4 sensor space? Or return one set to best buy?
>>
>>61650988
Return to best buy, no question. You can get another sensor standalone for better room VR.

It would be 3 sensors, since the touch controllers come with one to go alongside the one your Rift headset has.

Given how the cost of a 3rd sensor takes over half the cost of touch controllers, maybe you should keep it. The extra controllers may be handy for breakages or you could sell them off on their own.

Which of the (Rift, Vive, PSVR) would you guys consider a daily used device? Added bonus for an HMD that you can just throw on with no major hassle.

What I mean is I never used the entry level gearvr much after a month (apart from porn it's a surprisingly good way to use in secret away from my girlfriend) don't want to lose that novelty fast like the gearvr when I upgrade.
Any advice would actually be very appreciated.

A year or two the guys at Oculus said, probably a little longer with delays and such.

We will see superior headsets from other companies before then but I doubt they will be considered gen 2.
>>
>>61651011
A standalone sensor is 60 bucks. A touch package is 100, only 40 more.

>>61651011
I've got a third coming in the mail today, actually.

>>61651121
I bought the bundle back on prime day, so there's some weirdness going on.

>>61651377
That was my thinking. I've actually got a standalone sensor coming in, so I would have a four sensor setup. I've already banged my controllers a few times, and now Oculus is experimenting with mixed reality using a third controller for tracking an object...
>>
>>61657730
2019 at the earliest for real "Gen 2"

Oculus outright stated they don't expect a successor for about two years, and Vive's folks have expressed similar sentiments

>>61651836
I was surprised by how much better desktop VR is, but Daydream is what convinced me VR was worth it. That said, the lack of positional tracking sucks.

You can save up abit on the side and work out what else you would spend that money on, if you would end up spending that dosh on shit then get a headset.
I only have a gf and no kids so no real obligations other than the occasional night out so it was an easy choice and no buyers remorse which was surprising.
>>
>>61660699
My problem is that like after the initial WOW of the VR and the two games i'll put it on a shelf and not touch it again for years till a better headset at a cheaper price comes out, making this whole thing fruitless.
>>
>>61657928
this is a great question.
>>
>>61660718
It's hard to say because it differs from person to person but I bought the PSVR just for Resi 7 because I'm a RE nut, the fear of giving up on VR after a short while was there but the appeal of VR made me upgrade to a Rift. I even kept the PSVR for the occasional exclusives despite using the Rift alot more.

It just depends on how consistent that WOW factor is for you and you can always return the headset if you feel it's not for you.
>>
>>61660965
>>61660718
Another anon chiming in here. There's more fun games out there than you'd realize too. I didn't expect to like Echo Arena but since it was free I tried it out and now I play it almost every day. There are certainly a few games I checked out through torrents that I ended up playing a lot too. And there's more and more stuff coming out. I owned Alien: Isolation and never got around to playing it, but now a VR mod came out so I'm planning on finally playing it. The reviews are pretty positive already. I think the only "gamer" who wouldn't be satisfied right now would be someone who's extremely focused on a single genre/type of game and doesn't like any others.

Is there anything out there other than VRcovers that replace the part of the rift that goes up against your face? The hard angles on the default face mask thing are the only thing making the rift uncomfortable, but this VRcover seller is the only thing I can find that offers an alternative and there are a lot of bad reviews for it, some saying it actually makes it more uncomfortable because the cloth bunches up since it doesn't fit perfectly, and if you don't use the cloth then the faux-leather makes your face more sweaty.

They're the only ones I've seen. I have the same issue as well.

I assume you got the old bundle. The new bundle ships with a new facial interface that they'll add on the site to order separately soon. I haven't seen anyone compare them yet but just judging by the photos it looks better than the old one.
>>
>>61650649
I'm having the same problem. I opened up MSI Afterburner, launched SteamVR, and watched as the GPU and Memory clocks maxed out.

Honey Select also does this, VR or not. I have to underclock/undervolt just to get it to quiet down so I can have a peaceful fap, and make sure I turn them back up for other VR games.
>>
>>61668807
Bought their covers for my Vive. Not the full replacement ones.

The leather I found to be comfortable and I use it by default now since it's so easy to clean compared to the default foam. The Rift doesn't have the same issue with the foam soaking up sweat like the Vive does though since it's far denser and has some sweat blocking layer on it. It does make you sweat more but it's better than dealing with wet foam. I'd say it's about on the same level as the default Rift foam in terms of breathing which is to say it neither really breathe well at all.

The cloth cover I felt was a little coarse and didn't really solve the sweat issue so I don't use it. Not as comfortable as the default foam. Of course you can talk to someone else and they'll have a different opinion.

Where the fuck is my rift. I place my order more than 2 weeks ago. REEEE!
>>
>>61657928
I'd say no. First few times was amazing, but if you do it every day it starts to become routine just like regular fapping. To really appreciate it longer term you'd have to space out the fapping, but then you're paying $400 for something you only use 1-3 times a week for an hour tops.
>>
>>61648582

You should have gone to a retail place. Amazon and Oculus were the first to run out of stock and get backordered.

I ordered from Oculus at first, but after going a week without hearing any updates I cancelled the order and went with Best Buy. They had the bundle that included an xbone controller and a copy of EVE Valkyrie, and had free 2 day shipping. Newegg took a while to run out of stock too.

I'm learning my lesson from this one, and avoiding Amazon and first party sellers whenever I can.
>>
>finally get my Rift
>dropped frames every 30 seconds or so no matter how much performance headroom I have in every single program, including low requirement games like Thumper

What in the hell, man? It's so annoying to drop from 90 FPS to 87 for no reason. Just sitting there in Lucky's Tale I see the drops. It usually happens when something happens like the pig kicking the ball in the idle screen or breaking a box.

I'm guessing my processor/RAM just can't keep up with what's required even though usage is low... I've fuckin' tried everything.

Would putting the two sensors to the left and right of my curtain bar work (faced downward)?

PSVR is pretty decent at video, the screendoor effect isn't really noticable unless you're trying to see it. Darker videos look better though, I will admit that.

>>61686273
As I own both, the comparison isn't even fair at this point. No one should waste their money on a Vive unless they're a developer or engineer or something. The Vive is not entirely better than the Rift and there are better things about the Rift that the Vive doesn't have unless you buy the accessories that will make it even more expensive, like the deluxe audio strap and the knuckles controllers. Also LG will probably come out in a few months time and it'll be better than the Vive so if you're going to spend that much you might as well go with LG. HTC is a shit company.
>>
>>61688309
If you have a big room I'd still say it's worth the extra for the Vive. Own both too. But as you say, new hardware just seems so close at this point. Even if it ends up being early 2018 I'd say wait if you want to go the Lighthouse based tracking route.

Shit I didn't know this and I'm pretty OCD with graphics settings, probably spent 2 hours messing about Witcher 3 settings alone on PC.

As far as I can tell PSVR seems like a short term try if you're heavily into VR and have the option upgrade to the rift later on, I was quite content on getting the PSVR until the rift prices became comparable.
I suppose selling the PSVR later would work.

Can HTC vive be installed completely offline? I want it to use it with gaming pc which I keep disconnected from internet. Is there some kind of registering needed? Or I can jus download installer, copy it to external drive and move to my pc?

I think you can install it with first downloading SteamVR from steam (all VR games need this) then swith over to steam offline mode, connect your headset and open the steamVR setup.

I keep my pc offline because I no longer buy original games. I started pirating everything after all the problems I had with my original games. It took ages for GTA V to start because it needed updates, blizzard helpdesk wanted photo of my id after I got problem with password (long story) etc. To summarize - you can no longer own games, you just pay money to corporations so they kindly allow you to use their software when they feel like it.

And because pirated software can contain trojans or other malware I run them on disconencted machine. Also I don't have to worry about telemetry and other stuff.
>>
>>61695987
>To summarize - you can no longer own games, you just pay money to corporations so they kindly allow you to use their software when they feel like it.
This has been the case with video games for ages, you own the storage device containing the 1s and 0s and are granted a license which legally allows you to access them. You don't own the 1s and 0s themselves, you only own the storage medium.

The only difference these days is now they have the mean to enforce it.

Nope, you would very likely not say that if you actually owned one right now. With that said, views like these are understandable, as the marketing, videos, and everything for VR right now is terrible and doesn't show how good it actually is.

Ok, I just checked myself. I downloaded vive installer. First it asked for .net framework. After installing it and rebooting I proceeded further. After reaching the step of vive software installation I got 'error connecting to vive server'. Guess I won't be buying that.

Vive installer is something completely separate and shouldn't be installed even if you're online.

As far as I know you need to be online once to set up SteamVR if you want boundaries and some of the config but after than you can play completely offline. I actually play offline most of the time since I haven't wired ethernet to my larger playspace and pirate almost everything.

Summarizing from what I've heard about the vive and experienced with my rift:

>Vive's got a front facing camera so you can see your room around you if you need to without taking the headset off
>you don't need to buy another sensor to get reliable 360° tracking (which isn't much of a positive because rift + 3rd sensor is still cheaper)
>Rift's rigid headstrap gives it a more comfortable weight distribution (Vive is getting a similar strap as a seperate addon)
>Rift's motion controllers feel more natural to hold (Vive is getting similar controller as an addon)
>Vive's face foam absorbs sweat while Rift's doesn't
>Rift's face foam has hard edges, which can leave marks or irritate your face after a while
>Rift's max roomscale area is like half the size of the Vive's, and you need active USB3.0 extension cables because the sensor cables are only 6ft
>their lenses each add their own unique artefacting, pic related, which are only really visible in high contrast situations
>Vive has somewhat higher FOV, but more screendoor effect
>Vive is adjustable so it's glasses-friendly, with the Rift you might end up scratching your lenses (both your glasses' and your rift's) unless you buy a $30 third party addon for it and reducing the FOV by moving the screen further away (vive adjustment does the same thing)
>Rift might not be compatible with your motherboard's USB slots, even if they're 3.0, and requires a third party PCI USB extension bay that people have reported issues with (no idea about the vive)
>>
>>61697006
There are pros and cons to each, but the price basically nullifies any of those as they're small enough differences that don't have nearly that much of an impact on the experience. The two headsets are more similar than they are different.
>>
>>61697268
I can tell you're trying to be fair here, but the reality is a bit better in terms of how good the Rift is for the average person. For example most people don't have rooms larger than the max size the Rift with 2 or 3 sensors allows. Most people will not have those USB problems. Being more glasses friendly is only good for letting other people try your headset, otherwise it's uncomfy and fiddly as fuck no matter which headset you're using. The real solution is to buy a lens adapter or 3D print one to give you the big natural FOV and good comfort and no need to fiddle around having the headset on top of your glasses frames. The Rift package is getting new foam which will probably be more comfortable.

Something else I don't see mentioned often at all regarding the Rift's FoV is that not only is it smaller than Vive's, they reduced the stereo overlap. This can cause eye fatigue. If you ever feel like you're a little crosseye'd when using the Rift then this is most likely the issue. It differs depending on IPD and other factors though so some people don't even notice it.

I'm almost thinking of returning my Rift since I think I'm just so acclimated to how the Vive is that it's hard for me to get used to. Pic is a decent example of what it looks like that someone made. It's definitely not an uncommon issue people have. I think most just don't realize that it doesn't need to be an issue.
>>
>>61697738
>Most people will not have those USB problems
You might be right. Go searching for issues and obviously you'll find a bunch of people who have had them.

I'm just speaking from personal experience. I bought the USB PCI-e expansion that Oculus themselves recommend, and I've had to swap USB ports around mid-game because one of my sensors stopped functioning. It happened a couple more times until I finally plugged one of the sensors into a 2.0 slot. It works with the 2.0 but not the mobo's 3.0, but my mobo's getting on in years (Z68)
>>
i wear glasses, im guessing my glasses wont fit a VR headset or will be very uncomfy squished up against my face

do i bother with VR at all?
>>
>>61697934
Maybe, it depends on your head shape, the glasses frames, and the headset in question. You can fix all of these potential problems by buying an add-in lens accessory.
>>
>>61697868
I don't think it's as bad as that image and you make out to be. I went from Vive to Rift and while I did notice there was a bit less overlap in the FOV, it wasn't that much. Most people don't care for this and it's probably even more true for glasses wearers who are used to some visual differences between their eyes.

>It's definitely not an uncommon issue people have.

It's not an issue at all for the vast majority of people. I mean I owned both and pretty much no one I've shown them to point out such an issue.

Plus the overlap means you can get a decent FOV while optimizing for pixel density so the resolution is even sharper looking on the Rift.
>>
Should I just wait for that mixed reality shit MS is coming out with?
I could probably preorder that acer one.
>>
>>61698124
Actually the Acer one is released already, but it's a dev kit. Also impressions have come in and they're not the best, to the point that a Rift is probably still the better deal.
>>
>>61698035
>It's not an issue at all for the vast majority of people.

I don't think that's true. It's just that it's something harder to point out or notice but it still causes eye fatigue. Just like people might not notice what's actually making them feel nauseous with VR sickness.
>>
>>61698252
>It's just that it's something harder to point out or notice but it still causes eye fatigue.

And most people don't get eye fatigue with the Rift or the Vive unless you're reading small text, because the resolution is still too low. If you can't point out any of those problems in the experience then by definition it's not an issue. If you have issues these specific issues with the FOV or eye fatigue, then you are in the minority.
>>
>>61698325
>And most people don't get eye fatigue

I think that's more attributed that most people keep VR sessions short.

> If you can't point out any of those problems in the experience then by definition it's not an issue.

That's a ridiculous statement. You can sense that something is wrong without knowing what it is exactly. I actually had no idea what was bothering me using the Rift until I looked more into it.
>>
>>61698369
>You can sense that something is wrong without knowing what it is exactly.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Most people don't sense anything wrong with the visuals other than the resolution being low.

>I think that's more attributed that most people keep VR sessions short.

I don't know man, I've let people try my stuff for 30 minutes to hours at a time. I have family members and friends who play on my gear all the time.
>>
>>61698414
Also just saying, but if it were such a common problem, then reviewers and other owners of both headsets out there would point this out on a larger scale, but they don't, as far as I've seen. Surely, they're not people who play for very short sessions if they're such enthusiast users.
>>
>>61698414
>>61698462
I mean I've already kinda mentioned why people might not mention it, they just attribute it to being a part of VR. Hell I don't even see reviewers mention the lens flares.

I've found relatives to be the least discerning when it comes to these things. They'll wear it completely wrong and not tell me that the image is completely blurred but still trough though it, later coming to me in a sweat saying that they feel like they need to take a break because they're so light headed. All anecdotal of course.

>>
>>61698508
No, I understand you completely. I am saying that even then are not bothered by the experience in any weird way that they can't describe and I have talked to them extensively about their experience because I care about it. Most people I demo to do not walk away with a feeling of being lightheaded or something like that. I think there's also a good reason most reviewers don't point out the lens flares either, because in most games and software they don't really stand out that much. And it's also not like this overlap problem you're describing, because some reviews actually do point out the lens flares.

Anyone else having problems with SteamVR? It's the worst part of my VR experience so far.

It makes my PSU coil whine when I start it up, it randomly moves the room center outside the play area making me go through the set up process all over again, it doesn't send audio to the Rift's headphones unless you set the Rift as the default playback device, and recently it stopped recognizing that I have a Rift. It keeps showing me this screen saying my Vive is disconnected when I don't have a Vive. In order to fix it, I have to go into the OpenVR folder and manually launch vrserver.exe as admin, THEN launch steamvr.

vr is cool at first, for about a month or two its real neat. However, you get used to it, it completely loses its magic and you realize you are just looking at a screen up close. Hard to explain but the first few times you try vr is going to be the best experience, then it slowly goes down to derp levels where you would actually prefer just using your computer monitor, I guess unless you are retarded or something.

A "standalone" headset is rift's next project, meaning no computer or phone needed, but they haven't dropped any hints when that might come along.

Facebook is expected to debut a $200 wireless Oculus VR headset in 2018, according to a report based on unnamed sources by Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman. We’ve confirmed some details related to the story.

The new headset will work without being tethered to a smartphone or PC, the report said. If that’s true, it could make VR more accessible to the masses. VR has had a slow start in the past year, but it is expected to be a $75 billion market by 2021, according to market researcher Greenlight Insights.

“We don’t have a product to unveil at this time; however, we can confirm that we’re making several significant technology investments in the standalone VR category,” said a spokesperson for Oculus, regarding the Bloomberg report. “This is in addition to our commitment to high-end VR products like Oculus Rift and mobile phone products like Gear VR.”

If you bought the Inateck card you're doing it wrong. That card has only one USB controller servicing all the ports. The Startech card has four controllers, one for each port. You won't experience problems with it, just don't install the manufacturer drivers. Let Windows use generic ones.
>>
>>61704913
You say beta but that's not to say it isn't fun or cool already. I'm already playing VR games everyday and going back to them, while my flat games are touched rarely. True though, it's mostly only good for gaming and experiencing stories right now, and maybe porn. The hardware needs to get better for other use cases to be worthwhile. Improved resolution, comfort, and form factor are the main things that will enable the other use cases and push VR into a larger market.
