What's wrong with windows font rendering? ClearType is one of the best things m$ has ever created.

It looks good on a high-PPI display. ClearType can't be used as it relies on subpixel layout, which renders it incompatible with displays which can rotate.

Huh?

You'd have to redraw all text on the display every time you change the rotation, and handle the fact that the effective subpixel layout has changed. You'd have to have four rendering profiles depending on rotation, and for that to Just Werk the manufacturer would have to provide a lot of info.

Fine - not inherently incompatible, but impractical to implement. The DirectWrite rendered text looks fine on a high-PPI display (and I say that as someone who primarily works on MacOS), and high-PPI is the future.
