Poorfag here, that decided to wear a watch again.
What would you consider buying?
The Casio MRW-200H which is ~20€ (Amazon Germany) is to big for me (4,5 cm x 4,5 cm), so i'm looking for something smaller. Preferably one that is analog and where i can change the strap, cause i like leather.

Pic related was recommended in the last thread and is not analog, but looks neat.

I wanna treatmyself to a nice watch. I really like pure mechanical watches with an exposed look.

I've been rocking a Fossil watch. I like it, but I think its time for an upgrade.

Can I get a proper watch for around $500?

Recommendations?

There are not many decent mechanical watches with insides that are visible from the dial side in that price range. Fossil has one that's fine. Orient has some as well that are good.

Give me two good reasons why I shouldn't sell this inherited Rolex bubbleback.

I CAN'T WEAR THIS except for weddings and funerals. I'm not a businessman, I make my money outdoors. Yes it is beautiful. A lot of people stay away from vintage Rolex so why should a new collector leave it to gather dust and not have a more practical steel Rolex.

I can sell this gold 1950s Rolex and buy a 114270 Explorer I which will last me forever and for all occasions.

Do whatever the fuck you want, man. I have an 114270 and it's great but I also wouldn't have traded it for my grandad's gold Omega dress watch. I think the emotional value would be more than whatever cash you would get trading it in, but maybe I'm just an idiot for getting attached to material things. There's really no right answer we can give you, do whatever makes you happy. All these watches are just stupid trinkets we buy for our own enjoyment anyway.

Tuning forks are a technological curiosity that never really caught on, so Bulova is actually the cheapest and most plentiful of the very few tuning fork watches around. Very few people know how to service them, and they have some incredibly finely made parts that can't really be reproduced anymore so it's harder and harder to keep tuning work movements running.

>>
>>61646874
As strange as it may sound to you, he's unironically correct. Most of the posters on most watch forums online know nothing more about watches than what marketing has communicated to them about the relative "prestige" of various brands, and which models appeal to them aesthetically.

The overwhelming majority of them wouldn't be able to describe the basic workings of a mechanical watch if you held a gun to their head, nor are most of them even capable of making objective comparisons of the finishing between brands in terms of cases, dials, hands and bracelets, much less capable of comparing the technical features of actual movements.

Plus, bad ideas can still get shouted down here instead of us having to pretend that Panerai buyers aren't indulging in a cuckolding fetish.

Hey /wt/, here is the 1960 Patek Philippe Calatrava ref 2573 I inherited. Would it be worth having it restored? >>
>>61648856
Damn fine watch that. $3k sounds very high though for something that could probably sell for $5-6k in its current state. It's not going to increase resale value more than the cost.

A new modern patek croc strap is ~$800 new. Do you really need a new one?

It's hard to see the crystal from that picture but it doesn't seem like it needs replacing. iirc that model is acrylic so even the toothpaste method can clean it if it's scratched.

A full service of the movement I'd expect to be ~$1k. There are several dedicated 3rd party places that specialize in Patek.
>>
>>61649102
that is my grail watch. Who the fuck did that to the crystal? Get it serviced and keep it for life but it should not cost 3k. You don't need a strap just get the movement serviced and the crystal replaced.

>>
>>61649816
Fair enough. I was thinking of the past more. For as long as I can remember the best mech movements are expensive as fuck, and rightly so. They're marvels of engineering. If you didn't want a marvel of engineering, then you got a cheap mech watch, since its less accurate movement would be assuaged by its lower price, and some mechs were really good even for the common man's purchase.

If you don't want a mechanical watch that of course means quartz (inb4 obscure vaporwave indie watch that's neither). And with a quartz, if you really couldn't be satisfied with a $50 Timex or Casio, then you'd get a $250 Bulova, and if that didn't cut it, then you were best off saving up about three Gs, since that's the only point where you start paying for a movement that's actually appreciably better than that Casio.

Responsibility to not hurt poor people's feelings? I don't want to turn this into another stupid episode of /wt/ pretends to know how rich people should spend their money, but why do you think shit like the Patek Nautilus or the AP Royal Oak (NOT the niggered out Offshore) exist? It's $30,000 for a fucking plain steel three-hander beater sports watch, the people who buy those things could not give less of a shit if the watch accidentally falls overboard when they're leaning over the side of their yacht. And those aren't watches any normal person would recognize, nobody out on the street is going to say holy shit that dude's wearing a watch worth more than my entire life savings.
>>
>>61651755

I'm thinking about picking up a nice used Speedmaster Auto, but I'm kind of torn about it. I've always wanted a speedy and the auto models are in my price range (I saw a few today in the ~130,000 yen range) but the fact that they're not the "real moonwatch" is a bit of a letdown and I'm not sure how I feel about the 39mm size.

Somewhere out there, some motherfucker puts this on his wrist every morning and looks at it with appreciation before he goes to get laugh at by his superiors at work.

better in what way?
hand-winding isn't needed and hacking isn't a must.

Then get the SKX if you don't care about handwinding.
>>
>>61664081
why would you ever care for handwinding when it's automatic?
>>
>>61664125
I personally think it's kind of useless since you just gotta shake the watch a couple of times to get it started, but some people get off on that kind of geekery.
Hacking is super useful though if you're autistic about setting the time.
>>
>>61663973
>>61664125

hand-winding is nice to have to get a watch started or to get a watch through a weekend. Hacking is essential for accurately setting your watch. if you can't even accurately set the fucking thing what good is it? It also makes it easier to work on if that needs to be done. YOU CAN'T EVEN SYNCHRONIZE YOUR WATCHES WITH YOUR BUDDIES.
>>
>>61664148
>Hacking is super useful though if you're autistic about setting the time.
in theory you shouldn't set the time backwards when it's not hacking (only forward) as you are going against the balance wheel and can damage it.
in practice 7s26 is cheap and already inaccurate, so most don't care.
>>
>>61664125
If my watch is dead and I want to wear it I like to be able to wind it to a full charge and be set for the day. As opposed to having to shake my watch like a monkey to start it up. And even then I don't know if it really got a decent charge or not.

are you a couch potato, or why wouldn't the auto wind it up when it's on?

Regardless of where the second hand is on the dial when you set the time it still will keep time at whatever it does. If you set it to 10:30 while the second hand is at 45, it is 10:31 when the second hand hits 45 again, not 12. Are you going to tell me in the day you need to know the current second in the day? By the end of the day you've lost time and your watch is already doing this.
>>
>>61664769
I want to accuratly be able to set my watch. I don't need a watch to begin with. If i can't even set it to the second what the fuck is the point? Its going to be off at the end of the day? I am going to die anyway should i just stop working and dig a hole? the fuck you talking about. Stop making excuses for your shitty skx. They make seiko 5's that cost less and have better movements.

balance wheel is still engaged and wants to move the gear train forward when it's non-hacking, but keyless work goes backwards. that's some unneeded stress for the movement.
even most manuals for non-hacking don't mention setting the time backwards for this reason. see pic for 7s26.
>>
>>61664796
>if it can't even be set to the second, what the fuck is the point

I don't know man what's the point of your:

Alarm clock, car clock, microwave clock, ANY dress watch without second hands

Gee I don't know. You're being autistic and unreasonable.
>>
>>61664921
Just because I like to set the time to the second on a tool that tells the time doesn't make me unreasonable. If you buy a tool that doesn't accurately do what its supposed to do that is your problem.
>>
>>61664921
Also you can accurately set the time on instruments without seconds hands as long as the time keeping function has stopped during the set period... so you are basically a fucking idiot.

I am autistic because i buy tools to use and you can't set this type of tool correctly without it stopping. Me not wanting to buy a shitty tool is being autistic? I consider hacking a necessary feature for any time keeping device. My fucking microwave allows me to set the time like this. How is that autistic? Are you fucking retarded? What are you arguing for? that movement is from Aegler not Rolex
>>
>>61664432
I actually think he already has an apprentice, surprisingly.
>>
>>61665931
You mean the movement factory that made movements for all of Rolex's watches that Rolex has full ownership of? And you only listed a small part of the full name of that company. The factory is a Rolex factory there is no such thing as Aegler. An "Aegler" movement is a rolex movement. The only Aegler there is some family member that is a higher up at the current rolex movement works.
>>
>>61665931
Rolex did not have complete control over their now fully owned movement factory, they were only a minority shareholder. The full name of the company tells the story "Aegler, Société Anonyme,Horologies D Excellence Fabrique des Montres Rolex & Gruen Guild A.," this means, in translation, Aegler incorporated, manufacturer of Rolex & Gruen Guild A Watches. At this time ownership of the factory was split between three parties, Herman Aegler (movements only), (Hans Wilsdorf of now Rolex, RWC watch sales) and the Gruen brothers, Frederick Gruen and George Gruen. Now Aegler manufactured movements for both companies, who then sold the completed branded watches in their respective territories; Wilsdorf of Rolex, throughout Europe, Asia and the British Empire; whilst the Gruen brothers sold in the USA only. This arrangement worked well until Rolex acquired the patent for the the Oyster case and screw down crown system; now they had something very new and special which they wished to sell all over the world, not just in their limited territory. However the three way partnership prohibited Rolex from selling their products with Aegler movement in the Gruen brothers' territory (and vice-versa).

So Hans of Rolex being a very clever and shrewd man, took a sideways move and fitted their new Oyster cases with a movement from FHF (Fontmelon)factory just down the road from Gruen and then tried to find a US distributor.

Rolex bought Aegler only in 2004.
caliber 3155 is from 1988, thus not in-house.

You don't need a dedicated hacking mechanism, if you put backwards pressure on the crown you can "hack" the watch. So even if you insist the second hand must be correct, simply not having a hacking mechanism doesn't prevent that.

That being said, you don't need to, necessarily use the second hand as a time telling mechanism (like anon mentioned), but rather as a indicator mechanism to let you know that the watch is currently operating properly, without having to look at it long enough to perceive movement in the minute hand. This is why lume on a second hand is required on divers, not because they should be using it for timing while diving (it's mostly the minute hand that's used while diving), but because the second hand is used to quickly ascertain that your watch hasn't stopped. And that's why you'll see watch manufacturers put lume on either side of the second hand on dive watches they like.
