Glass tables.
Never ever.

You don't see shattered wooden tables, do you?
You don't see a scratch on your wooden table and go "aw fuck it's ruined!", you go "..." because nobody gives a fuck about scratches on solid wood.
>>
>>61643212
I bought an IKEA dinning room table in 1999 for $200. Its solid oak, and I've never seen them sell anything this good since. Now its all stupid particle board, weird metal legs, excessive flare, or other minimal weird design crap
>>
>>61643582
Just buy a seat that lets you put it up really high.
Buy a standing desk.
Done.
>>
I'm all about ghetto desks. to date i've used wire-rack shelving, craig'slist kitchen countertop, a cardboard box from a washing machine, a broken washing machine, a TV tray (supporting the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and tower), and a $20 folding table from costco.
the wire shelf was my favorite.

Unless you're a child who never had to buy his own furniture you'd be upset if your solid wood table got a gash in it.

>Is stand/sit a meme?

Depends on the type of back problems you have.

For me standing only makes things worse.
But I have a colleague who really benefits from it.

>It's impossible to cable manage effectively

We managed fairly well.
Just add some slack to anything connected to the walls.

I've got a cheap Ikea handcrank sit stand, love it

put your cables in an organizer fixed to the desk. Keep a powerbar in there and you'll only have power (and Ethernet I guess) coming out and to the wall.

It's for sure a meme but it's good for ya

Does anyone have any advice for someone with long arms:height? I'm 5'11"/180cm long, and my wingspan is 6'4"/193cm. My main issue is that I've irritated my nerves on the underside of my arms and irritated my carpal tunnel.

Since I've gotten a chair with arm rests, the majority of the pain and twitchy movements have subsided. I still ice my forearm and wrist, and do stretches for it every hour or so if I'm gaming. The thing that's bothering me now is that even though my forearms are leveled with the desk, my shoulders have to be shrugged quite a lot in order to achieve it.

Has anyone else had and solved a problem like this? I'd like to see some input from someone else who has had the same issue, is all. I've been looking into making a standing desk or a desk low enough for my spaghetti arms in my dad's garage because he's got a whole bunch of wood he's got lying around gathering dust.

Pretty easy to put together your own, especially if there's an IKEA near by
Grab one of their solid countertops for like $120 and source someone local to weld up legs
Pic related cost me a little over $400
>>
>>61644320
Just make sure it's height adjustable, preferably without having to use tools. (my desk has a button you press to release one leg so you can adjust it in 1cm increments)
Maybe even spend a little more to have it adjustable via a crank.

I think all offices use height adjustable desks like that.
You can buy them quite cheap 2nd hand and replace the top to get a new looking desk.
>>
>>61643582
If you get one you will need a mat that will force your body to move to stop your legs from getting injured. I don't remember the name of it but you should get it if you get a standing desk.
>>
>>61644537
What the fuck are you talking about?

The point of stand/sit is to change positions every hour or so.
For example sit for 1 hour then stand for 30 minutes, then sit again for an hour, etc.

You're not supposed to stand all day long.

This.
All those stand-memers are fucking their joints up so hard.
People that work in retail standing all the time would like a word with them.
Shits pain.
It's a one-way trip to arthritis and other joint pain, muscle wasting, tendon damage and others. Not to mention constant activity just takes months off your maximum possible age no matter how good your diet is. There is such a thing as too much exercise. Fit-freaks die a lot more than you'd think, for example. (outside of the ones that have unknown heart conditions, that is)

The human body never evolved to be constantly standing or active.
The larger an animal, the more it needs to rest for a period.
This is why tiny little birds can fly around faster than eyes can see all day and elephants like a little chill swim through the day.
There's very few animals that are exceptions to this. They are usually very successful predators that work in groups to get around limitations of Earth-based biology, so technically don't count either.
They are closest to human success as other animals get when it comes to coordination.
We just had the right conditions that led to massive brain increases and abstract thought.
>>
>>61644754

Mainstays

I got it at Walmart to replace a very old dilapidated wooden "desk in a box" desk I've had since childhood that was all fucked up from various mistreatment due to being a dumb kid.

I don't notice any slants in it, seems flush to me. It does have a seam in the middle and the surface is a bumpy plastic texture, so you can't actually write papers on this desk, but who the fuck writes anymore? It's perfect for a computer.
>>
>>61643823
Build one. Not terribly difficult and you can get Home Depot or Lowes to cut wood for you.

This is something I am considering in my room when I do it up in a couple months.
Right side for my computering stuff.
Left side for another hobby at the same time (be it electronics, drawing, etc.)
Also going to have a huge wall of open storage with boxes that just slide in and out. No hanging braces, no sliders, just boxes resting on the wood. I'll make sure they can fit a typical large laptops dimensions with room to spare, that's about the biggest flat surface I think I would need. (have a bunch needing repair or salvage)
If it comes to it, I might actually make a double-width box. where else will I put my robot sex doll project?

Easy way is use a paper / cardboard curve traced from original desk.
Then when you have it mostly cut out, you use a fine sander to get it as perfect as you are happy with.

You can make your own curves using the method in pic related.

even if it's solid wood and not particle board, at that thickness with that support, you're gonna have sagging issues in a few years
>>
>>61650088
>issues with nomenclature

No, you were wrong. You were wrong about how much a solid wood desk costs. When your mistaken assumption got pointed out, rather than being like "hey okay I was wrong, now I know!", you instead got booty bothered and tried to imply a butcher block surface doesn't qualify as solid wood. Which is fine! You can be wrong if you want.

You then went on to try to quibble that a butcherblock joined with fingerjoints isn't a butcher block. When you got corrected on THAT, you then proceeded to instead attack my formatting, my tone, my emotional state etc. I'll just take that as acknowledgement of your error.

Now you know that you don't have to be a particleboard pleb. You're welcome for the education. The fact that I had to drag you into the light kicking and screaming made it all the more entertaining.

The other guy is probably saying it'll sag in the center of the boards. Also, apparently it's particle board. Still, if you're not going to put a lot of weight on it it'll be fine. Particle board is definitely weaker than mdf, ply, or solid woods though.

Solid wood will warp too with minimal finish like oil. You need to seal it with like two coats of moisture resistant polyurethane.

If you want to put wet stuff on wood just use a coaster or get a tempered glass top just for the area you'll put hands on

End Grain, Edge Grain, Face Grain

by Ron Smith | April 13, 2013

Woodworking Grains

When embarking on wood projects, it is important to understand the differences in woodcuts, as well as the criticality of moisture measurement and moisture control in your wood. Regarding the wood grain, any piece of lumber has three surfaces: end grain, edge grain, and face grain.
End Grain

End grain is the grain of wood seen when it is cut across the growth rings. Rather than cutting a plank of wood the length of the trunk, end grain wood is actually cut at a 90-degree angle to the grain. This type of cut exposes the character of the wood rings and graining. Many wood lovers relish the results: a cross-grain which pleases the eyes and the wallets. Put simply, end grain cuts produce highly-aesthetic wood with character, color, and durability.

Video from Woodworker’s Journal

End grain boards are typically used to manufacture butcher blocks, as an example. The end grain boards are made by cutting the pieces of lumber into blocks and gluing the blocks together with the end grain up, forming the top surface of the cutting board. This block construction makes the butcher block very strong and durable. During cutting and chopping, the end grain wood fibers absorb the impact of the knife blade so the block is resistant to nicks and gouges. One needs only reflect on the culinary punishment unleashed on chopping blocks over time to grasp the durability factor of end grain.

Today is moving day for me so forgive the messy photo but I have the Bush Cabot L desk. Got it for 200 bucks and honestly that's the best price I have seen for such a big desk. And they are really cool with sending replacement parts. They just sent me the pieces I needed for free.

Unfortunately shitty particle board but as far as particle board goes, it could be worse. My ONE complaint is that the drawers suck ass. I can't get them back in either, so they just kinda hang out in their spots but it's ok.

>>
>>61650178
I'm looking at this desk right now. Don't listen to the other anon, there are metal braces that run the length of the desk on both sides, and there's no flex to the wood with the bracing supporting it. For what my roommate paid for it it's a steal.

my point was if it isn't solid wood anyways, what's the difference to Ikea? It'll be replaced either way.

Veneer / particle board wears out too fast at the edges, and it ends up looking shit after a couple years. Never mind susceptibility to moisture once the particle board is exposed.

i was not praising Ikea at all, though people underestimate how nice and expensive their kitchen stuff is.

the desk is pretty damn nice, and 7 feet wide. would be even nicer if it was brand new since the reason the guy was selling it was because one of the legs broke/cracked off from the frame during delivery. it has a few other dents and scratches but that's the main thing. he glued the leg back on but the company let him keep it and gave him a new one. fuck all if i could afford a new one though.

That's not what the graphic implies.
It specifically says sapphire glass in reference to the gorilla glass.
The main heading is incorrect, if anything.

But equally, the material in question is purely synthetic.
It is a "pure", single crystal zero defects grown in lab conditions. (similar to jet engine parts too)
Finding even significant quantities of that in nature is damn near impossible for any use outside of jewellery or science.
It's not saying that sapphire is synthetic at all. It is saying that this glass itself is synthetic sapphire.

You just needed the metal extenders. No hacks needed. The frames extended to the ends of the table and you just screw in the extenders to make sure the tables lock. And maybe remove a leg and reposition it somewhere else. People just called it hacking because it made things sound cool.

It is a shame about Ikea's older modular desks. The new Linnmon uses cheap low density particleboard rather than the high density fiberboard in the Galant. The new Bekant system uses the same density fiberboard as Galant but the table tops are thinner.
>>61646948

>>
>>61660296
I stand by that curving method. Helped a lot.
Obviously the resolution of the curve can be improved by halving the distance between the divisions of each axis.
Anywhere from 0.5cm and up is good enough for curving wood, rest being smoothed off by a sander.
The larger the division between one axis and the other will require smaller resolutions, but I can't imagine anyone would be doing curves that tightly and asymmetrically. Not for tables at least.
Wouldn't even be needed for large curves like, say, an open doorway being done with MDF or something like that, since the angle or length doesn't matter, just whatever the distance your sub-divisions are set at.

Going to do that myself when I get my table and storage built over the next few months.
No more jagged edges for me. Uncomfortable as fuck.
Actually thinking of making a walk-in closet in this room at the sacrifice of losing about 50-70cm on one side of it. (the longest wall, making it even more a rectangle than it is)
Would 1) make a huge useful wall to put things against and 2) make a large storage space instead of the current shitty walk-closets with shit doors.
I just need to get a guy to check whether those solid walls between the 2 closets is a load-bearing wall or not. If it is, I will not be a happy man.

Standing desks are bad for your joints. People have tried to rectify this by using treadmills that run at a very slow rate, but it turns out that's not too good for you, either.
Just sit down.

be careful... i bought a bunch of tools Jan 2015 with full intentions of making and selling end grain cutting boards. I bought ~1.75" thick rough walnut stock so I had to make a router planing jig, table saw jig to work as a jointer, cross cut sled, etc. All this added to extra money spent on plywood, "better drill/driver combo" i had to have, screws for putting it all together etc. To this day the few cutting boards I've made were given out as gifts putting me further in the hole for my 'cutting board business'
>>
>>61666642
Nice dude. Make me one? I can't pay you, but I'll tell everyone you made it. It's free advertising for you, buddy :)
>>

Wanted this, but no Ikea near by and shipping prices are more than the table itself.
>>
Anyone use a drafting table for a desk?
>>
>>61648324

If you scratch a solid wood table and it bothers you, you can just sand it back to smooth and re-finish it.

If you somehow put a super deep gash in it you could use a filler and then sand it.

I got a solid wood desktop for free, it's pretty nice.

Any desks with metal crossbars to support the top can be a pain for some multi monitor stands (affecting position of stand and if it allows you to get past the bar).

t. stuck with slightly off center main monitor because of it.

For both lumber and doors, check your local Habitat for humanity ReStore. The total cost of my desk was 75 bucks.

>4 height adjustable IKEA legs, OLOV: $60
> solid core door from H4H ReStore: $15

Now I have a desk that's:
> solid as a rock
> customizable (the computer pedestal is made from $20 bucks worth of plumbing parts
> every part is reusable for future projects

/diy/ gave me shit for not cutting off the hinge holes, but w/e, I like it.

I should have clarified. I don't actually have a business making end grain cutting boards, nor am i desperately in need of extra money. I was planning on selling some because I woke up one day and wanted to do woodworking as a hobby and it wouldnt hurt to reimburse myself on the cost of all the tools. I may actually start selling them though since I just bought a house and need to put money back into my savings and investment accounts.

I need space for fuck sakes, what desk do I get? My desk is literally 35.75"x19.75". This thing is so fucking small. I was looking at the Ikea Bekant desk and those are ungodly huge from the measurements they provide, which interests me. Are they good, or are there better options?

if you want a LOT of space you could buy 2 high quality desks from amazon and put them together for like 240x60 or make a huge corner desk out of them for the same price.

I'll never buy from ikea again after my last desk, legs arrived wobbly as fuck, "wood" is thin and feels almost hollow, arrived scratched in an unopened box. Just trash

it's not about adult/child, having your feet dangling puts pressure on the backs of your legs which fucks circulation. It's bad for you. If you want to use a high chair you need a barstool ring or something else to put your feet on so they aren't just hanging

What? Your ears are about at eye level, and the top of those monitor are about at the same height as the speakers. The top of the monitors should be at eye level, and looking at the chair I think they are.
