I live in rental flat/split house and my neighbour has been broken into last week. Also I am sick of door to door people.
I would like to put together a home CCTV system on a budget. Something that is expandable but that will last a long time. I have no doubt the 4-6 camera kits from maplin will be crap.
Can you provide any software for this... What sort of storage do I require? What sorts of resolutions will I require?
I would like a peephole camera too... Can anyone recommend one?

All you need is a NAS. Look around Synology website. DSM comes with IP cam recorder (first 2 cam recording is free)
A professional camera job will cost $1600 a camera installed. The kits for sale offer effectively the same quality within the limits of the kit for a fraction of the price.
The hardware requirements are very low, more or less any modern computer will have enough power to manage the system so you can get away with even a few hundred dollar system.
For storage that's mostly a function of how much old footage you want to keep around. I'd expect all in to spend $2000 on your system if you do it all yourself.
feel free to use hikvision with an easy password ;)
CCTV will do nothing to prevent a break in.Its a sign that you have something in there worth spending money to protect. You are way better off with good locks and a silent alarm.

also CCTV in cities won't stop some nigger/spic from stabbing or shooting someone. it'll just (((help))) identify him.
too bad because it won't fucking matter anymore for person who was stabbed/shot or huis/her family.
