>>61640377

look, for 220 usd chromebooks are your "new" options. If I recall correctly they have 0 storage, everything is botnet and in the cloud.

If you really want something to watch chinese cartoons you could look for a strong tablet or something with hardware acceleration.

>Is the x220 strong enough to shitpost here?
yes
>can It melt your skin if the fan is shit
probably
>can it do 60fps video watching?
depends on the codec and resolution.
x220 typically has a hd ready screen so if you really value your fps then just watch 720p rips

>what else to watch out for?
- I would change the disc it comes with a new one, if that's not an option for you, then I wouldn't store anything mission critical on it.
- I would also change the keyboard and clean up the case for "hygiene"
- Check the hinges, if they are too loose you might want to replace them down the road.
- Look at the usual telltale signs of wear and tear. If it gives too much then skip, and look for something better

Returning to report back success.

I mentioned almost three weeks ago I had purchased a lot of three T400 laptops with the express purpose of Libreboot. I finally had enough free time to dedicate to the project and I successfully flashed two of the three (third remains for when I have some additional free time).

I didn't want to leave the anon I spoke with hanging...I mentioned there would be a possibility I might sell one after if everything went well. I've made the decision to give one of them to a close friend and the other as a spare machine. Sorry for late response anon if you're still lurking the tpg threads.

Overall I am quite satisfied with the outcome. Running Trisquel now. Parabola is next on the agenda.
>>

>>
>>61641314
>But beware, you're probably going to get a shitty ass screen.
How does the IPS screen compare to the LCD one?
>>
>>61642493
If res. is a deal breaker for you then don't. For my needs it personally wouldn't bother me.
>>
>>61642509
I have an x220t with an amazing IPS screen (macs still have better ones, tho) and my friend got a t 430 with a TN screen.

The difference is massive. TN has much much lower brightness, but less reflection; the colors on the IPS are amazing while the TN of his t430 has a yellow tint and dull colors. Its very noticeable, but if you're not using your pc outdoors then its all fine.

>>61642493
I've always used that screen resolution (a downgrade from the 1280x1024 glory) and its fine, I'm blind so it helps to see everything bigger. I used a 1080p panel for some months some years ago and it was much better, but 768 is just FINE. If you need to downscale stuff, I think there are tools for that.
>>
>>61641686
I really do like that splash screen.
>>
OK anon's. I'm giving in, my old m11x finally died, I had gave it to my wife a few years back after upgrading to a nicer dell. But like always she killed it. So I'm going to buy her a thinkpad since they are tanks. Looking to spend 200-300$ US. I don't care about the hard drive, I have a few ssd's laying around, thinking of getting the HD caddy and doing a raid array on it for a little more performance. But it's basically going to be a Facebook and office machine. Any thoughts? What would be the best bang for my buck?

>>
>>61642937
>Facebook and office machine
Well you could just pick any. Decide on the screen size and try to get the best quality on it. Also, watch out for the keyboard, after T420 they've fucked it.
>>
>>61642937
x220, t420 or t520 if you really want the great keyboard (if you sont and find 230/430/530 variants that are cheaper then go for them).

x1 if you need something light and thin (stay away from gen 2).
>>
>>61643064
Thanks,

I know that whatever is going to be fine. But I always have to max shit out on performance, you know what I mean. I do it with everything, cars, computers, my grill, my a/c and so forth. Just a thing that I have that makes me do the best efficiency and performance.

I bought a used T520 last year and it's super fucked right now. I had no problems whatsoever until yesterday I turned it on and I just get a black screen with an arrow. There's the starting windows screen, then black screen with a cursor. Ctrl alt del does nothing, right click does nothing, the only buttons that work are the caps lock and I can turn the light on and off. I can move the arrow but that's it. I tried doing safe mode but that just gave me a big, low res cursor. I put a windows disc in the cd tray and booted from it, but it even does the same thing. "Windows is loading files" and then black with pointer. Google tells me to do a bunch of different shit but they all seem to involve the command prompt or the recovery disc, is there anything else I can do or is it just fucked? I'm on vacation right now so I don't have access to my desktop. The fact that I can't even get it to boot from disc makes me think maybe the gpu ate ass but other than that I'm totally lost
>>
>>61643254
Wait so why exactly am I fucked? Well I assumed anything electrical could make high pitched noises
>>
>>61643449
yeah they are genuine, the third party batteries have their own branding, although since it doesn't come in the original packaging and shipped straight outta china it's questionable how old the battery is or if Lenovo would honor the 12-month warranty

They are also on Amazon for $69 right now and returning items via Amazon is a lot easier. I've been watching this for a while and I might pull the trigger now since usually they are listed for around $80.

I'm ready to join the Thinkpad reich however I'm doubting between two models.

I can either get a X250 with 8gb of DDR3 ram and a i5 5300u CPU for 710 euros or a X260 with a i5 6300U cpu and 16 gb of DDR4 ram for 910 euros.

It will almost exclusively be used for programming (processing big satellite imagery so the extra memory is a big plus) but I'm doubting if its worth the pricebump.

What do you guys think?

I've been using an X220 with arch linux for programming for a while, but I'm also into music production so I just ordered a T430 to stick ubuntu studio on. Did I done gud /b/?

I don't think you know what that means.

Is it normal for a 4 years old T430 to be operating at 70 degrees Celsius on idle?

t470 vs x1, with the t470 specced to match the x1 in price, which one would you recommend as a better mobile workstation? the x1 is sexy and all, plus the t470 i would need to put a ssd in it seems like, but the battery life seems pretty good

Ebay. It was a lady selling it and so I am hoping that it will be in as good condition as shown in the images. Make sure you check every listing. She didn't describe it as being IPS in the title and so it didn't show within search results for 'IPS X230s'.

So /tpg/ heres my G40
70w Pentium 4 at 2.8ghz, desktop socket 478

Under 100% max load for ~20 minutes it never got past 60c. In fact, as soon as that fan settles it sticks at 55c and hold its there for the most part. The fan is extremely quiet and it doesnt even run when its under 55c.

So with a 70w processor giving me these temps, and P4's having a max of like 90c or something, what could i drop in here if im ok with a maximum temperature of 80c?

Ive got the 220w japanese power brick from the japanese G41, so wattage is no issue.

Im thinking the 3ghz northwood one. ~80w should be doable.
Another anon here has said he did the 3.4ghz P4 EE, which is 103w but has an 800mhz FSB that requires a bios change in order to use, and it only runs at the 533mhz FSB of northwood anyway

Need a laptop for 4 years of uni, do I really buy the old 2012 models over the T470?
>>
>>61649721
Not like a T420 or anything, but you can still use one for 99% of uni stuff.
Hell, if all you need is Microsoft office and web browsing, you can get away with machines from 2005.
Even my G40 from 2003 is fine with web browsing and all that.

I suggest a T440/450 for everything uni would need in a more modern package. An X series like an X230 is also good if weight and size is a concern.

I was thinking about changing my T61p to a better Thinkpad, I found a second hand T510 (without the GPU, only the integrated Intel HD graphics) in mint conditions for 260€ and with the docking station included. My main concern is, is it possible to switch the display I'm running on the T61p (a 1900x1200) on the T510 (a mediocre 768p)? Should I just keep for another couple of year the T61p and consider later a switch? My main use was mostly shitposting and watching chink cartoon but the T61p couldn't catch up streams at 1080p.

T60's without ATI graphics can be librebooted and the 15" model can be fitted with a 1600x1200 screen. Only downside is weaker CPUs and a 3GiB RAM cap (even though you can put in 4GiB, this is due to to a chipset limitation). RAM for the T60 is cheap, I got 2x2GiB sticks by Crucial off Amazon for about 25USD.

A buddy is offering me this on wednesday for $60. It only has a small ssd (32GB) in it and a hdd but it seems like a pretty good deal. Should I buy it? My macbook is getting really old at this point (mid 2010).
>>
>>61665256
ya that's a good deal as long as it functions

Just use dd and then resize it.
>>
>>61665256
Sure why not.

>My macbook
You can also install macOS on a T420 pretty easy if you want to keep using macos, only need to swap the stock wlan card.
>>
>>61665271
He said there is nothing wrong with it. He bought it and never used it because he couldn't stand the screen (used to the one on his macbook retina).

>>61665283
I might try that out. Will most likely be running linux on it though. Can't stand using the trackpoint in windows.

The lying cunt. It's a TN panel
>what do I do?
>>
>>61665390
price check an IPS panel and see if buying the panel + thinkpad and replacing the screen it's worth it

you could sell the stock tn 1366x768 panel to get some bucks, 1366x768 shittops are everywhere
>>
>>61665465
I've bought it now, It's been delivered. She described it as being an IPS panel when it blatantly isn't. This was over ebay with PayPal, if that helps. Not sure where I can get a genuine IPS panel from within the UK.

You might be able to swing a T70 motherboard from the chinks. They're expensive as fuck if you can even find one, but it'll jack up the specs far beyond anything else you could put in it. Skylake quadcore, I think.

In a more reasonable budget, you could get a 14" 4:3 T61 motherboard, which would let you upgrade two CPU generations and increase maximum RAM to 8GB. Modding could take you as far as a QX9300 from what I've heard, but that's heavy stuff requiring physical modification of the CPU socket and Core 2 Extremes are ludicrously expensive. A T9500 or T9300 is much more realistic.

Without replacing the motherboard, you should be able to upgrade as far as a T7600. You can also pick up a Thinkpad Advanced Dock if you want to upgrade your graphics capabilities. I don't think the T70 motherboard has the proprietary docking station port, so if you go for one of those it won't be an option, but you won't really need it with how much better modern iGPUs are compared to the shit the T60/T61 had.
>>
Anyone from the UK or Germany able to help me where I could get a cheap

X230 or T430
with an i7 and NO HDD and perferably NO RAM?
>>
>>61665498
Thank you, Anon. I think a T61 mobo would be the best, I think it would be more than enough for my needs, and it seems I could get one for a reasonable price.
>>
>>61665498
>Core 2 Extremes are ludicrously expensive
the x9100 is like $7 and very overclockable
>>
>>61653244
i copped this for 142 the other day
>>
>>61665548
Get a complete T61 rather than just the motherboard. You won't be able to run a Penryn CPU in a Merom board without first flashing a BIOS mod, the T60's Expresscard/Cardbus/Smartcard reader uses a different connector than the T61's, and it'll probably be cheaper to get what you want anyway. You have to be careful with T61 motherboards since the early Nvidia ones are timebombs and even the later ones are still housefires. Intel iGPU boards are safe bets, but relatively uncommon. And I mentioned this in my first post, but the aspect ratio has to match what you've got. If it's a 14" or 15" 4:3 model, you need a 14" 4:3 T61 board. None of the 16:10 boards will fit. Likewise, if your T60 is 16:10, you need a 15.4" 16:10 T61 board.

http://t61.wikispaces.com/ this site ought to help in your search. I can also recommend picking up a T/W500 cooler, as it's far superior to the stock T60/T61 coolers, both quieter and more effective. Even an iGPU board will benefit greatly, but you definitely want it if you get a dGPU.

Maybe I can haggle for some memory to be thrown in with it. Then I buy any 2.5" SSD?

>>61666422
It should be replaceable, but I've never had to or heard it done. I think the sensor is in the lid near the webcam and there is a magnet in the palm rest that triggers it.

Terrifying moments, decided to repaste the cpu in this thing, went to pull a small 2 cable connector that's bundled with the screen cables, the entire thing popped off the mobo. Luckily the two important connectors (that actually have wires attached) only broke off on the solder. The other two came up with the traces. So if it turns into an issue its a quick fix with a hot paperclip.
Still works, so I dont know what those wires do. Whatever
Anyway, G40 guts, weighed the heatsink, it weighs 2 pounds.

Every Acer computer (1 laptop & 1 netbook) I have ever used was absolute garbage. The laptop had a shitty battery and was always falling apart at the seams and the netbook had a less shitty battery but absolute garbage hardware. It was terrible for even shitposting. Tomorrow I'm checking a guy's thinkpad. The price was good and it seemed in a good state in the photos

The BIOS lock is the dealbreaker and as a self-diagnosed autist I need to be prepared so the spaghetti doesn't drowns both me and the guy in case it actually is blocked and I break off the deal.

How common is for the BIOS to be locked though?
>>
>>61668777
two thinkpads I bought in person both had BIOS supervisor passwords

the first guy had the password and gave it to me, no problem
the second guy did not, went home or back to his IT guy or whatever and got the password then I met him the next day and bought it

It's a fucking meme. I just need excuses to not buy it because explaining what a BIOS is and why it's importat to a technologically illiterate 40 year old will surely be a pleasant experience for both parts. It would be awkward and he will be disappointed or angry that I wasted his time and didn't want the PC.

No, I don't have autism I think. Maybe I'm a bit weird but I'm preety sure that also rings for the average anon.

I'm computer illiterate, somebody please explain to me why I shouldn't buy this for word processing and internet browsing purposes. I only need it for studying, I'm not trying to run any video games or crap like that. My current desktop is a toaster so the processing power doesn't sound disturbing. Hard drive size may be a problem though, how much space does a Windows 10 install take up? Also is Windows 10 as shit as everyone says, highest I've ever gone is 7.

This may look like a shitpost but I really am this retarded.
