If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
>>
I bought a single stick of RAM 16 GB that runs @ 2400 Mhz.

Should I return it and get something else? I have an ASUS Prime B350-Plus and a Ryzen 5 1600. What RAM should I get? Is the CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 good?
>>
Threadly reminder that you have to be mentally retarded to buy a dual core desktop CPU in 2017 and if your budget is really that low then just buy a used Xeon workstation and put a SSD in.

Planning to overclock Ryzen 7. Still haven't decided on a case, so cooler size isn't limited. What should I get if I want cool temps and quiet as possible while pushing 3.9-4.0GHz?
>>
>>61632073
>what should I get if I want cool temps and quiet as possible while pushing 3.9-4.0GHz?
R5 1600, it should hit at least 3.9 and has a fairly low TDP
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/lucoh/saved/Jw4K8d

Like to make it cheaper, while still running most steam games
>>
>>61632105
Isn't that TDP just based on stock specs?
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HY7cnn

I think I'm done with this list. But I have a question about RAM. Can I just get one stick of 8gb and add another stick later on? Someone suggested getting a dual channel kit but I don't want to take up spots for potential future upgrades.
>>
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/LHjPBP

Anything to change?
>>
>>61632127
>Like to make it cheaper
First off, pirate your OS. Jeez.
And you can get a nice chink mech keyboard for way cheaper. Don't buy Razer products.
>>
>>61632127

Maybe take a look at different case and keyboards. I was looking at the redragon RGB and it seems pretty good. but I've never had the chance to test it so idk
>>
>>61632137
>Can I just get one stick of 8gb and add another stick later on?
You could, sure. But I highly recommend getting two sticks because it's double the bandwidth.
>>
same question as in old thread, going to build my first PC, having trouble deciding between an i7 or Ryzen. It'd be mostly used for gaming, but i want to future-proof it and not have to worry for some time about upgrading. Which should I get?

also, i've been seeing that nvidia is offering free copies of Destiny 2 with their 1080s, but i'm not really sure which ones would quality. If I got a 1080 FTW hybrid from amazon, would it qualify? (in US btw)
>>
>>61632149
Looks good
>>
>>61632149
Wtf are those companies, and why are they so expensive? I can get the exact same ram but $50 cheaper from newegg
>>
>>61632190
Future-proofing is a genuine meme and both processors will be obsolete around the same time.

>>61632218
It doesn't hurt to ask, but keep in mind that they're really shitty when it comes to free stuff. I bought my RX 480 like a couple of days before AMD started giving away free copies of Doom to customers and they told me to fuck right off.
>>
>>61632215
lol if you intend to upgrade, just buy two sticks now so you don't have to worry about it. If you're really that insistent on getting one stick, you can always upgrade it, since RAM is easy to replace.
And yes, always go with 2 sticks instead of 1. It's noticeable.

I usually manage to save around $15-20 a month unless something bad happens.

Been using pic related for 6 years, but the power supply and hard drive are failing, it was pretty cheap though, $50 at goodwill.

Going to be used for gayming (mainly emulators, some modern games), as well as VM's and possibly playing with the stream processors. I haven't put together a computer build since 2010 so I'd like some critique. Is there any way I can get this cheaper without sacrificing too much performance? I plan on overclocking as much as I can.

Watercooling will give you more time till you have to ramp up the fans. Pumps are pretty quiet nowadays. If you're running it at 100% for a min or two, before more 'idol' go air cooling as it's cheaper.
But if you're going to peg it all day get watercooling.

I'd bump up to 3200 ram if you're already spending that much. An air cooler at that price would work just as well and be quieter. That hdd is probably refurbished if you're okay with that.

A hybrid FE card at 1700mhz is on the heels of the 1080ti 10-15% in most cases 20% in the worst optimized games, Assuming that the AMD driver team learned anything from the FE card and what games people are currently playing. Tower I need suggestions especially ones with great airflow to beat this heat.
Motherboard I'm not sure what brand to go for. I had an Asus Maximus VII Hero but it fucked up on me even with surge protector. The customer service was terrible.
Graphics card same as motherboard, brand wise. I can go for a 1080ti if needed. I just need to know what price to shoot for. 1080/1080ti is fine.

I don't know how you can say the FE is on the heels when they are 20 FPS behind a normal 1080ti that people buy. No one is going to buy a 1080ti FE unless they are putting a water block on it and then it rapes Vega. While the FE hybrid is already under water or at least partially.

>>
>>61636225
Good RAM is expensive, especially now, either high frequency high latency, or the reverse, but either way doesn't matter for Ryzen nor any other platform, so long as you get a good balance between high frequency and low latency you're fine.
>>
>>61636225
fast ram makes a HUGE difference on AMD Ryzen processors because of how the architecture works.

Ryzen is essentially 2 4 core CPU complexes (CCXs) on a single die. The 2 CCX's have to communicate with each other via AMD's new Infinity Fabric technology. The Infinity Fabric runs at the bus speed of the ram, so fast ram makes a MASSIVE difference because it directly affects how the CPU communicates with itself.
For Ryzen CPU's with less than 8 cores, there's still 8 cores. But underperforming cores are deactivated during the binning process and sold at a lower price. What's interesting is the cores are always deactivated symetrically. So the 4 core CPUs have 2 cors on one side, and 2 on the other. and 3 per CCX with the 6 cores.

Fast ram makes zero difference on Intel chips because the architecture and chipsets can't take advantage of it.
>>
>>61636269
any yet the balance isn't even there 3200mhz at CAS 17 responds like a full millisecond slower than 1600mhz at cas 9.

and yet all you get is people saying, ditch this speed for this speed without even doing the maths themselves. it may not matter in shitty ryzen systems but it does matter.
>>
>>61636293
fast is relative, if it's fast but takes double the amount of cycles to respond it's effective clock speed is wasted isn't it.

The clock speed of the ram directly affects how fast the CPU communicates, regardless of latency. Multiple tests have confirmed this.
Do a little research before spewing bullshit Intel Shill. How much are you getting from their infamous "rebate" program?
>>
>>61632710
Or just crack a install of win7 with Daz, and upgrade for free using the accessibility version
>>
>>61636328
it directly effects how fast the ram performs a cycle, not how fast the cpu communicates with the ram. the cpu sends a request, the CAS is how many cycles until the ram sends the task back completed. if the speed is higher but the latency is higher as well the ram would perform similar to a slightly slower ram with lower latency.

while i appreciate your complete idiocy, shilling has absolutely nothing to do with my point. why don't you learn what the fuck you're talking about, or cite some actual tests that you won't find any of.

So I have a Ryzen 1600 and Corsair 16GB 3200MHz RAM and have strange issues with overclock.

https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-3200MHz-Desktop-Memory/dp/B0143UM4TC

My MSI X370 SLI plus mobo lists the Corsair RAM as part of its QVL. During overclocking I can't get the RAM past 2667. If I get any other BIOS than the one it shipped with but it has an issue where I can't OC the CPU anymore and it gets stuck at 1.55 GHz but memory actually boots into windows at 3200MHz.

So I get a beta BIOS that doesn't fuck with my CPU overclock and I get 3200MHz ram booting into windows. I do a 15 minutes of prime 95 testing and everything looks good. I play some games for a few weeks and everything is great a few crashes to desktop here and there but that I thought was because of my mods and whatnot. So I play a game and this time it freezes completely and I have to restart. Any time I have my RAM above 2800 MHz it crashes in a game within a few minutes or if I run Prime95, within 10 seconds most of the cores come back with errors. I run memtest86 and get errors at 3200MHz, but not at 2800MHz.

The thing is why was I able to run my RAM for several weeks just fine without much issue at all, but now it suddenly doesn't work anymore even with setting the DRAM voltage higher and loosening timings. Is it possible for RAM to degrade like it is, or was I just lucky that it was stable on my mobo for a few weeks? Just for reference I'm running my CPU at 1.45v 4.1GHz on my custom loop where it doesn't go above 70C at all.
>>
>>61636388
>completely misunderstanding the point
The ram sets the bus speed of the Infinity Fabric. What matters isn't how fast the ram can communicate with the CPU per cycle. WHat matters is how fast one CCX can communicate with the other via the bus speed Infinity Fabric.

Ok so I bought some fans, I'm paranoid the connections wont work on my mobo. 1 "molex" connector goes into my PSU right? You don't need to have one on your motherboard because I see a few 4 pin things but they are male, not female like I think molex should be.

Please help /g/uys

Is this an okay and compatible build for light gaming, video making and editing.I already have an Asus gtx970 and a Coolermaster Hyper TX3 Evo to put into this secondary setup.

The build needs to be relatively compact and have a simple and easy upgrade path. An Asus gtx1070 will be handed down into this build in a few years time.

Region: Australia
Budget: 1k-1.5k excluding gpu, cpu cooler, and extra hdd
Purpose: Light usage of games and editing
Size: Smallest possible atx or smaller if practical
Misc: Will this setup work with a copy of Windows 7 that I already own with the disk?

Don't buy x370 unless you need the extra features (such as SATA ports) x370 boards tend to offer over b350 boards.
