Hey /g/, first time poster here.
I'm looking for a specific kind of laptop.
Basically an ultra-simple notebook whose sole use is to work on one document (a book I'm writing that is structured hierarchically, mostly just plain text). I also need USB or another way to occasionally transfer data in/out of the PC, and a way to encrypt the document. Nothing else. I will not be browsing the web, listening to audio, watching videos, playing physical media etc.
Here are my goals, in order:
- Lightweight and portable, since I will be traveling extensively with it
- Screen big enough to compose a document with an outline pane on the left and composition pane on the right.
- Good battery life
- Fast boot
- Cheap
- Fingerprint authentication would be kinda cool, but not essential.
I want to achieve the above by eliminating anything that isn't absolutely necessary.
What I DON'T need:
>Optical drive
>Any networking technology, not even a network card (but hmm, I need a way to get MS Word on there initially)
>Advanced graphics
>Multimedia
>Other things I won't be using, like hard drive space beyond several GB, a lot of RAM, webcam, etc.
>I don't even need the OS to have a desktop environment, as long as I can easily launch my word processing application from the command line.
I prefer to use MS Word on Windows but I am open to Linux since I could use KeepNote or CherryTree, which also would allow me to compose a large, hierarchical document. I do not want to use a plain text editor since I need to easily navigate & manage the document hierarchy.
Cheapest Chromebook you can find, run Ubuntu headless with LUKS, use vim.

I already have one of the 'high end' Chromebook 2s. How can one run Ubuntu on it? I'm a complete noob, I've never actually run Linex or anything.

then don't try to learn an entirely new OS just to write a book.
Just bring a fucking pen and pad you nerd. You'll be editing it either way, so passing it to a PC won't be extra work.
A device this limited doesn't exist in this day and age because nobody would have any reason to buy it. You'd have to make your own.
