>install Nvidia drivers in linux
>causes every major DE to shitfuck itself

That was the point where I gave up on the Linux meme for good and installed Windows 7 on my new Ryzen desktop.

what about driving external monitors? or are they just useless on linux
>>
>>61626133
Nvidia proprietary drivers just werk, at least on Arch.
>>
>>61626133
It literally just werks. It will take a restart to install so keep that in mind (unless you don't care about uptime).
>>61626601
Works OOTB. I do use a xrandr command in a script when starting X to specify the positions, orientations, and refresh rates of my monitors (some distros have gui for this)
>>
>>61626677
can they be completely disabled for power savings and fall back to onboard graphics? (like a 940mx in a laptop)
>>
>>61626719
afaik
>>
it just werks, although whether linux ports of games will run worth a shit is a tossup
>>
>>61626677
Wait there are Linux distros that don't even have a GUI for your graphics shit???

Jesus fucking chief what kind of bullshit OS is that?
>>

>have 7870

AMD FOSS drivers are the best.

9 times out of ten its i stalling a driver file

as far as games to play to make it worth using the official ones there is not many

I've used intel's open source drivers, nvidia's proprietary and open source as well as the three amd branches of proprietary, open source and hybrid. All worked great with no issues on a bleeding edge, "unstable" system. It's not linux's fault you're a complete retard and managed to break your system from fucking around.

There is a xrandr graphical command generator too. You graphically setup your monitors and can save the output as a .sh. The name is arandr.
