Vulkan(Linux only for now):
https://github.com/atomnuker/mpv

Test vulkan and post logs if it gives you any kind of problems.

For better playback quality paste this in your mpv.conf file:
# Specify high quality video rendering preset
profile=opengl-hq
# Scaler used when upscaling chroma (color information)
cscale=ewa_lanczos
# Scaler used when upscaling video
scale=ewa_lanczossharp

# Force video to lock on the display's refresh rate
video-sync=display-resample
# Reduces stuttering
interpolation
# Interpolation scaler
tscale=oversample

Notes: Remove cscale and scale if your computer isn't powerful enough.
Interpolation can also reduce framerate drastically.

Mpv uses software decoding by default.
You may want to enable hardware decoding using hwdec=auto or hwdec=auto-copy.
Note that it can lead to issues, depending on your video card.

Getting freezes under Windows?
Add

angle-flip=no

to your mpv.conf.

If MOUSE_BTN3 and MOUSE_BTN4 aren't working in your input.conf, try using AXIS_UP and AXIS_DOWN to control scrollwheel.

To get error logs, please add

log-file=log.txt

to your config file.
Then search the log for "dumb" anything or for [e].

>>
>>61625169
>Wait. So RAVU has half pixel shift like nnedi3 too?
Yes, it follows the same pattern as superxbr of directly mapping the source image to (0,0) and interpolating (1,1) followed by the diagonals (0,1) and (1,0) in (rotated) separate passes.

Note that normally, half pixel offsets like these are corrected by the main scaler, but when the main scaler is not active (e.g. image size == screen size), this is of course not going to happen.

So if you have a 4K screen and you're playing a 720p source upscaled to 1440p by the prescaler, the half-pixel shift will be corrected during the scale pass from 1440 to 2160. Similarly, if you're playing a 720p source on a 1080p screen, it will be corrected during the *downscale* from 1440p to 1080p. But if you're playing a 1080p source which gets scaled to 2160p on a 2160p monitor (thus causing the main scaler to be inactive), you get the half pixel offset.
>>
>>61625342
I see, thanks. RAVU looks great! It kinda looks weird for 720p -> 1080p though. At least with SSIM.

Could you explain the difference? I have a hard time understanding this shit even though I looked into the manual

The way I understand it:
You have a 720p video and you're watching it on a 1080p screen. cscale upscales it with ewa_lanczossharp for example. what's the difference compared to ravu-r4.glsl?

Just noticed that when I'm using I seem to be using bilinear scale even though I have it set to lanczos in my config, is this normal?

Whats the deal with FFmpeg vs LibAV these days?

It's been like 4 years since I last checked it out and it seems that LibAV still has regular commits and they seem to still be able cleaning shit up and nice implementations.

Would building mpv against libav be a downgrade for me? I only watch youtube videos I downloaded, pretty much.
>>
>>61636933
i suppose you can only hope for intel to add support for custom resolutions to the driver for your old gpu, then. or alternatively maybe you can use edid overwrites via cru tool? i don't think madshi plans to support that approach, though.

>>
>>61637026
FFmpeg has by far more features. Also not sure why you argue with "libav is still active" why ffmpeg is just as, if not even more, active.
Libav is a bad joke these days, everyone migrates away from it for a reason.
>>
>>61637683
I'm not arguing anything, just saying there are still people working on it actively so it's not dead and not a definite no-go.

>Libav is a bad joke these days, everyone migrates away from it for a reason.
Why is it a bad joke? I've been goggling this morning looking for info and all I see are complains from 2013 because they deprecated ffmpeg command for avconv and the message was poorly worded and confused people. I've yet to find any hard evidence to this claim and that is makig me wonder if it is worth using because I see occasioally in mv logs there are commits for it working with libav.
>>
>>61635775
Should ask on their github's tracker
>>
>>61637026
>>61637683
Yeah, FFmpeg is definitely ahead of libav in commit volume and mailing-list volume. It's also ahead in features. I forget the specifics, but some mpv features only work with FFmpeg (https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/wiki/FAQ#Is_FFmpeg_or_Libav_preferred_for_use_with_mpv seems to imply they're something to do with subtitles.)
>>
>>61637770
Yes I saw that, I don't use subtitles so this is not an issue for me. I also looked though the list and saw wm4 also posts patches to the libav list which also made me question a lot of this.

I think I may just try it out anyway for the sake of it.
>>
>>61637792
wm4 posts patches to both the FFmpeg and libav lists. He's actually one of the more sane contributors there because he realises how petty the FFmpeg/libav split is.

This depends on whether ANGLE exposes the required OpenGL functions/extensions (it doesn't look like ANGLE exposes glBufferStorage, so probably not) and if direct rendering is actually faster on ANGLE (which would be the case if direct rendering happened to align with how textures are uploaded in D3D11.)

So it's not likely, but it might not matter depending on if wm4's rendering API abstraction works out, since it looks like it replaces the current code for texture uploading.
>>
Which scale compliments RAVU the best? Id personally like to quadruple and use mitchell to downscale but it seems impossible, so...
>>
>>61637792
Google a bit about the whole situation, you will find opinions for either side.
However, some things exist in stories from both worlds: the dramatically different development policy. This also includes not merging good features from ffmpeg just because it's ffmpeg. It's this attitude that they have for years now and I hate it so much. Just reading about it pisses me of.

This is a rather old article from a guy contributing to ffmpeg. He is not a full ffmpeg dev, more like a dev that every now and then contributed a bit and experienced the friction between both projects. It's rather old (5 years)
http://blog.pkh.me/p/13-the-ffmpeg-libav-situation.html
Especially the "Technically speaking, what's wrong with Libav?" part is interesting and disgusting.
The latter part of the post is outdated. Debian was the major downstream user of libav. As debian's ffmpeg maintainer, back when the fork happened, was "part" of the libav crew, he switched Debian to libav.
However, a few years ago Debian reconsidered and dropped libav in favor of ffmpeg. This also means that the major downstream user of libav is gone now.

>A rather stronger argument came from Mateusz “j00ru” Jurczyk who, in his security-oriented role at Google, has been doing extensive fuzz testing of both projects and reporting the problems that come up:
>We have been quite successful working on the above effort with FFmpeg for the last ~3.5 years: every single issue we have found (even the least severe ones) has been fixed in a timely manner. As a result, after tens of fuzzing iterations, there are currently no bugs in FFmpeg that we are able to find using our current input corpus and mutation algorithms. The situation is entirely different with Libav, which is still affected by hundreds of such bugs, even though we have provided the developers with reproducing testcases a number of times in the past.

Intel and NVIDIA are working on compute shader support (and the rest of GLES 3.1) in ANGLE/D3D11. God knows why they care about ANGLE, but they seem to care about it more than Google at the moment. Google will likely care about GLES 3.1 if/when WebGL gets support for it, but WebGL might never support it because macOS doesn't support it.

Just put your default options on the top level, then the extension.mp3 can override them (since the default options are loaded first, then the file-specific ones, and then the auto-profiles last)

For testing.
>>61646100
I had superxbr with builr-in sssr for a long time and just replaced superxbr with ravu.
>>
>>61646011
>r2
For what purpose? Its already fast as fuck even with r4.

>>61646011
What more user shaders can I throw into this blender?

What do you guys use to get subtitles?

Is that from your shaders or Chihiro's garbage encode?
>>
How can i make scaling factor to apply quadrupling with nnedi3 or RAVU smaller? Now it wont turn for 640x480 -> 1080p, for example.
>>
>>61646216
You better use ravu-r4 for chroma.
>>
>>61646548
Why?
>>
>>61646485
Seems to just be the encode.
>>61646548
I don't know but with r4 chroma it looks like this.
>>
>>61646631
Dont use the one in the gather folder.
>>
>>61646669
But I did use the one from the base directory, besides isn't the one in gather only luma anyway?
>>
Oh, I thought r3/r4 stands for ratio 3/4, but it means radius...
>>
>>61646714
Try r4-all instead of separate luma and chroma shaders.
>>
>>61646714
read the readme
>>
>>61646755
Yeah I suppose they have to be the same number for it to work properly, i'll just stick to r2 however because my pc is a bit outdated anyway and the frametimes get a bit too high otherwise.
>>
>>61623584
Did Igv remove faux-HDR?

Why does the one I have not work anymore?
>>
>>61646876
>faux-HDR
What is that?
>>
So which provides better quality? r-native or just r? Just r hooks luma and r-native hooks RGB.
