about two years ago I fell for the mechanical keyboard meme. Of course, like everyone else, I talked myself into liking it because it was expensive after all. Couple of weeks ago, I broke my keyboard (my fault but that doesnt matter). Since I needed a new keyboard quicky, I just bought a rubber keyboard as a temporary solution until I've figured out which one to buy.
The difference is a joke because the difference is imaginary. I still type 130+ WPM and the keyboard is light as fuck. Instead I can buy a new one for 15 bucks every few months.

I'm looking for a mechanical keyboard not for coding but for excessive writing.
What would you recommend?

>budget: ~$250 max
>location: Europe
>switch type: not sure, kinda satisfied with my black switches atm, could be a bit harder
>layout: ISO
>form factor: no numblock but with arrows and F keys directly on top of the numbers would be cool
>backlight: no thanks
>current keyboard: g6v2
>>
>>61623731
Mechanical keyboards are a placebo you dolt. If you bought one thinking it would make you a better gaymer or typist then you're retarded. Its all about muh feels and that's it.

But muh feels contribute a lot. If it actually feels good to type on a keyboard, one might start typing for the tactile experience alone, and become a beter typist as a result. Placebo is overpowered

Got pic related full size today with Mx-Brown switches. Feels great so far, although the space bar is a bit more clicky than expected from browns, so I might have to install dampeners. A wrist rest would also come in handy. I plan to use it at work where I'm currently stuck with pretty old rubber domes. I could get a newer rubber dome one, but the current available generation doesn't have nearly as much push distance as the older one. That would suck for someone like me who likes to hammer keys pretty hard.

So far I prefer brown switches over black ones for typing (had been using the latter for a few years now at home).

Until getting this full size one I was convinced that 75% with vertical navigation keys and existing arrow keys was the optimum, but although I don't use the numpad a lot, it's useful for remapping some keys to macros for frequent tasks.
>>
>>61627199
What do you think would browns bother others in an open office environment? I love my blues but they are just too loud for a workplace and I was thinking about getting browns as a quieter alternative. Also I usually dont bottom out on blues.
>>
>>61627477
just get o-rings. It will still be louder then rubberdomes since those don't silence the up stroke, but it will be a lot better
>>
What are good uses for macros?

>>61627513

>>
>>61627477
I got a switch tester ahead of time so I could test out the noise level with my office mates. Green and blue were definitely too noisy, but brown has no specific click apart from the keys hitting the back plate. The great thing about brown is how the noise is the same as with regular long travel rubber dome switches, but there is silent tactile feedback.
>>
>>61627191
Wanting to make something retro, I don't really care if it's XDA or not, I mostly want just PBT, beige colored, caps with printing and a stepped capslock key.
The ones I linked aren't beige colored and don't have printing and their 'beige' color seems to be more just a white than cream beige color.

Hello guys, my first post here, so let's hope this goes well. The Logitech K120 is the best keyboard I have ever tried. It only cost me 8£ brand new. Why is it good you ask? I shall tell you.

Well, first of all: this keyboard is from Logitech, which is undoubtedly the best keyboard manufacturer today.

It is a rather common keyboard, yes; but because it is a Logitech, somehow it doesn't feel cheap. It's like the brand itself makes a crappy keyboard turn into a great one. I don't know, Logitech has always made me feel comfortable with cheaper products.

The keys are superbly well distributed, and your fingers won't touch the surrounding keys like some other ones I've tried. The keys are also not very soft, nor very hard to press down on. You know, this keyboard makes it just right, so that you can actually take advantage of the impulse that the rebounding keys give you.

This keyboard makes you feel like gravity is actually working WITH you, rather that against you.

Another thing I absolutely love about it, is the space bar. It is just the right size, and not too small or too big like on some other crappy keyboards from other manufacturers. The space bar is the most balanced key in the whole keyboard, it sits right at the center, and you can actually use it without looking at the keyboard. I mean, that's just brilliant design.

It's an USB keyboard. This makes it perfect for use with modern computers, and even laptops and netbooks. No more using that old crappy PS/2 port. We're in 2017, people.

I could be here all day, but in the end, I just wanted to share with you my experience with this marvelous piece of peripheral engineering. I recommend this keyboard to anyone.

FUCK just deleted my whole long ass post like a dumbass so rewriting it now

currently working on restoring pic related, first time ever doing anything like this but i only paid $38 for it so it's not a huge deal if it doesn't work out as expected. it's some kind of Honeywell Micro Switch SD keyboard, not sure what the final product would've looked like as it's missing the case and probably some other components but there were a bunch of these on eBay for cheap so i picked one up.
switches are mainly 4b3b's but there's some 4b3a's and 4b3k's thrown in there too (as well as some 6xxx's as the stabilizers for a few keys).

anyways, here's a list of the steps for now:
>clean exterior - done
>whiten key caps - done
>clean actual board (really gross and im lazy so im just gonna leave the caps off till i get around to this)
>polish keys (not sure this is super important but i want it to look kinda nice when im done with it)
>convert to USB/bluetooth
>3d print case

i really have no clue where to go with the conversion part at the moment. basically, all i know is there's a port for 20 pin ribbon cable and i need to somehow figure out what it does. i was thinking of using an old Pi to test it out but now that i think about it im not sure it's gonna be possible because the pin outs will be wrong(?)
a teensy is probably what ill end up going with later on, but for now i'd rather have something to mess around with so i can figure out how the keyboard works before actually making it a finished product. the Pi seems like it'll be good for this since i can just use this as the keyboard to control it directly + i can experiment with bluetooth maybe. also my Pi is a model A or A+ so in theory i can just use it as an HDI device to test the keyboard on another computer.
that said, i really have no idea what im supposed to be doing & these keyboards are barely documented. anyone ever worked with something similar? any tips?

The problem is that most budget keyboards have gayman aesthetics or loud clicky blue switches.

By number keys do you mean the numpad or the number row? Are you okay with ANSI layout?

Hey guys, I've been meaning to buy a mech keyboard for a while, while I had my eyes on the Das 4 for some time the prices have gone up on Amazon and I can't find one with ISO layout either. I have been looking at local dealers but all they have is cancerous and ugly gamer crap and very little variety of switches. If I had to buy a gaming keyboard it'd be something like the Corsair K70 that doesn't look aids inducing.

Should I wait and shell out for it or just buy a cheaper keyboard right now? Anything will be an improvement over the 10€ HP rubberdome I have had for six years.

Anyway, hope you guys can help me:
>Budget
Up to 180€
>Location (continent at least)
Europe, (spain but I am not really bothered by not having ES keycaps)
>Preferred switch type
I've never tried any but I do mostly gaming and programming/data input so I would guess either Red or Blue.
>Layout
ISO if possible but I'll settle for ANSI
>Form factor
Full size, I use the numpad on the daily
>Backlight
Don't really care

I lubed my space invader board with teflon. I thought I ruined the switches at first because they were sticking but they quickly broke in and the board was 100x better to type on. The switches are extremely stable because the sliders are so tight around the housing and the lube completely eliminated the off-center binding which was my only complaint about the board.

Reverse engineering the protocol is such a pain in the ass since you have to code your own firmware for the converter, that you're honestly better off doing it the Xmit way unless you can actually code and have access to a logic analyzer.

What we really need is a generic Hall Effect controller that can be slapped in these old boards, same way you can use any of the xwhatsit stuff for any sort of capacitive switch directly despite it being designed for beamsprings and model f's and stuff.

you can go from black plastic to black anodized aluminum. white is also an option.
>>
>>61645792
does it also resonates like a bitch when you're typing?
>>
>>61645308
yeah this is probably true, although I figured it would be a fun programming project to keep me busy. I still really want to know how people have been converting space cadets cause I have yet to find any sort of documentation on it (but I know it's been done plenty of times before). I guess the difference is that the space cadet was really well documented in comparison, but still seems like it should be possible to reuse that method since the space cadet's PCB was manufactured by Honeywell/Micro Switch as well

there is this guy selling Tai-Hao 5539 for like 25 bucks
is it worth it?
>>
>>61645871
The guy that made the USB converters for all those lisp terminals was one of the old greybeards that made the original machines. That's how they know they protocol and stuff exactly. They didn't have to reverse engineer it.
>>
>>61646099
I mean, it's only $25. Hell, I would buy that for the keycaps for one of my alps board.
Look up the model and see if that uses complicated white alps (SKCM White Alps)
>>
>>61646158
It is Tai-Hao 5539-3, the seller says it has white alps
>>

Yeah, it should have the skcm switches then.

>>
>>61646228
No, I'm talking about dirt in the switch housings. Alps switches get real shitty real fast if they get dirty. Which is a shame.
You won't really know unless you feel them.
You can clean them, but it's time consuming.

kek, yeah I'm pretty neurotic about this shit. From my experience, I'll think about it multiple times a day every day for about a week, then eventually make peace with it. I can't tell you how many times I've stared at that key with a lump in my stomach. Only thing that really pisses me off is it ruins the enjoyment of getting new caps :(

Oh well, that's life.

The caps are very thin doubleshot ABS so they'll end up looking like this after a month or two. Get some cheap doubleshot or dye-sub PBT keycaps for 20-40 bucks
>>
>>61646564
Oh gods ew.

Can I just print PLA ones, or would there be issues with that? I have a 3D printer.
>>
>>61646598
3D printed keycaps are worse, and even if you have a really high end printer you'll still get tolerance problems.
>>
>>61646615
Well I guess if that happens I'll give the 3d printing a try and if it's not good I'll just default back to my old printer until replacement caps arrive.
