The ISP knows where you're going and does forward your request to DNS. It is easy to display a message with needing to know what website you're going to. It could even be a simply webpage which the flags allowing it to over display.
>>
>>61618165
To display a message they would have to inject it into the data in transit. With http that is trivial, with https it's impossible unless the mitm the connection, in which case it becomes illegal.

>>
>>61624928
They are, but internet service inherently can't function like a free market. There's a finite amount of space that can be used on public land to build out a network, so cities and towns have to choose which one company is allowed to use that space, creating a regulated local monopoly. Thus, the companies should not be allowed to do whatever they want, because the situation simply doesn't allow competitors to come in and participate in an actual free market.

Are you retarded?

1gbps NIC's cap out at ~945-950mbps because of TCP/IP packet overhead.

Do the math yourself, packet overhead is ~5.5% on a 1000mbps that's ~945mbps.
>>
>>61625195
So your home network is limiting the speed of your internet connection? That's fucking retarded. Why aren't you using 10GbE?
>>
>>61625244
No, the fiber terminal my ISP uses is the limiting link because it has a 1gbps NIC.

Once my ISP upgrade to ONTs that provide SFP+ fiber output, or 10Gbps ethernet, then I could get faster speeds.

My ISP technically provisions 1024/1024mbps at the OLT, but again, since the ONT has a normal 1gbps ethernet NIC, nothing I can do about getting it any faster.

>>

So then your ISP is selling you something that their hardware isn't even capable of. Sounds like a class action lawsuit incoming.
>>
>>61625285
Every gigabit ISP in the country does this. So good luck I guess.

Google fiber? 1gbps NIC
AT&T gigablast? 1gbps NIC
Comcast DOCSIS gigabit? 1gbps NIC
etc, etc.

You can complain all you want, but 99% of consumers aren't going to spend the ~$1000+ to upgrade their internal networks to supports 10gbps anyway.
>>
>>61625311
Nope, DOCSIS 3.1 modems have dual ethernet ports to achieve 2gbps.
>>
>>61625335
Lol are you joking?

No one offers DOCSIS 3.1 currently, and if they do it's in a tiny pocket of the country with barely anyone using it.

Comcast offers 2gbps fiber to my house if I wanted it, but it would require me to provide my own 2gbps+ capable router. The one they provide for you has (you guessed it) a 1gbps NIC.
>>
>>61625359
are you seriously complaining about $150/mo for 2000mbps???

I pay upwards of that for 150mbps. Stop complaining you privileged fuck
>>
>>61622647
They're anticapitalists, actually. They're actually nothing more than commies, like you leftie scum.
>>
>>61625359
The point isn't having a 2gbps internet connection. It's so that you can get the full speed of a 1gbps connection. If you did have 2gbps, you'd have the same problem again since you'd be limited to 2gbps minus overhead.
>>
>>61617669
Me too. And we don't get "courtesy" coverage. If I go over it's an extra $2 per GB.
>>
>>61617635
it's really easy if you have amazon prime and watch 4k series or netflix and watch 4k series

and then also private trackers

>>
>>61625002
Your ISP usually sends you a email or letter in the mail stating changes to your contract. If they don't then it's illegal and you can sue them.
>>
>>61625284
When I paid for 150/150 I was getting 170+ regularly. However, at 1gbps you're hitting the limit of the hardware, no matter what you want to do about it on the ISP end, the hardware itself is your limit.

>>61625387
Complaining? Lol, no. But since they charge $1000 installation, and it would require me to buy a ~$500+ router, and upgrade all my NICs to 10gbps, and my switches, and re-run all of my CAT5e drops with CAT6a. It's just too much of an expense to be worth it when I have 1gbps for $70 already.

>>61625397
>It's so that you can get the full speed of a 1gbps connection
What the fuck are you even talking about, you would NEVER notice the difference between 940mbps and 1000mbps outside of speedtesting.

Further, YOU'RE the one claiming my ISP is somehow ripping me off despite the fact this is how every single 1gbps ISP in the entire country (hell even the world) works.

1gbps in europe rarely even breaks 800mbps but they still sell it as 1gbps.

>>
>>61625428
>despite the fact this is how every single 1gbps ISP in the entire country (hell even the world) works
It's not though. I just showed you an example of a cable modem with dual ethernet ports. Why is your isp selling you 1gbps service when their ONT doesn't at least have dual ethernet?
>>
>>61625501
>9/19/2015

lol good job posting from a fucking data center.

No RESIDENTIAL ISP in the ENTIRE US provides over 1gbps besides comcast with it's 2gbps FTTH service (which again, you're given a router with a 1gbps by default so unless you provide your own, you're stuck at standard ~940mbps (1gbps) client side)

Show me a single residential ISP in the US that offers "true" gigabit.

It's not google
It's not comcast
It's not Verizon
It's not AT&T
It's not any of a half dozen smaller gigabit ISPs throughout the US.

So show me one faggot.
>>

Not true though. The cable modem or ONT is usually provisioned for something greater than 1024mbps. The bottleneck is the ethernet interface on the other side, which has been solved by modems like the SB8200.

Want to hear something funny? In Canada, using a third party ISP (almost impossible in the US) like TekSavvy gives you unlimited bandwidth for $10 CAD ($8.04 USD) in Ontario or Quebec. In comparison, Comcast charges $50 USD for unlimited bandwidth outside the Northeast.

Unfortunately, it could get worse with the new CRTC chairman.
>>
>>61626151
Lol jesus kid, just shit up. Yes it's technically possible, but NO ISP will actually get you that.

Comcast's service simply isn't provisioned that high, or if it is you can't actually achieve those speeds.

There might be some smaller DOCSIS providers out there that can manage to push those speeds, but they're few and far between, and far from the usual, even for 1gbps customers, i'd wager more than half would simply be too far away to see more than 900mbps even if they were provisioned for more.

And it's STILL a fucking moot point once you get to a client device unless you're some autistic moron who actually upgraded his entire network for 10gbps.

Just stop man, NO ISP in the entire country behaves like you want them to for a residential client. MAYBE if you're an enterprise customer you'd have some sort of point, but the entire fucking country's supply of 1gbps internet providers is going to give you a 1gbps NIC handoff by default period. The original argument of
>sounds like a class action lawsuit
Is simply laughable, it would never happen because EVERY ISP in the country who offers 1gbps CURRENTLY does the same damn thing.

>most motherboards these days have dual ethernet
Are you delusional? SOME motherboards, not most. And you'd better make sure they're intel not some bullshit realtek garbage.

Also, how many people are provisioned for 200mbps(242mbps provisioned) and only see 190mbps? Like I fucking said, half of the customers would likely be far enough away that they wouldn't ACTUALLY see any more speed. If you're right up against the CO, sure you'll probably see some improvements. Assuming you have a 10gbps NIC and switches and CAT6a cabling for whatever autistic reason.

Again, you're simply retarded if you ACTUALLY think most of comcast's 1gbps customers would see increased speeds by using a dual 1gbps modem and requite 10gbps equipment from there (unless you're doing port aggregation the whole way in which case good luck)

It's a fantasy, and to pretend anything less isn't true gigabit is a further fantasy.

This isn't even to fucking mention i'd rather have 900/900mbps than fucking 1200mbps and garbage 42.35mbps upload.

Right now, Cox customers are about to be hit with this bullshit too, but it wasn't in the contract.

They just added it all on their own and sent out emails to millions of people warning them that they were now subject to data caps with outrageous fees for going over them.

But they claim it's completely fine because only single digit percentages of users use that much data in a month! But even my fuckin grandma knows data usage is rising and that they won't up the data caps, so they're doing this now so they can start fucking us on prices when 4K streaming or whatever becomes normal.

Maybe by 2025 everyone will be blowing through 2 TB a month and Cox will still have the 1 TB data cap and you'll have to buy a bigger plan to get it upped to 1.5TB, then 2TB, etc.

>If the government just hired 500,000 doctors and built their own hospitals and supplied all their own equipment
That's a really drawn-out way of saying that if government did its job we'd be better off as a society.

I'm going into a bit of a tangent here, but this is why I think our current government is illegitimate. Taxation is fine as long as the state provides me with the basic necessities that it agreed to provide me. Now, before anyone goes full retard with "hurr durr healthcare is not a necessity," let me remind you that the medical science in the US has reached a point where fixing broken bones should cost only the material required (plaster and bandages) and some labor surcharge for the nurse and as simple as going through a fucking drive-thru. Instead we have a situation where millions of Americans either let it heal unset like it's the cavemen era because they can't afford it or there are literally no hospitals within driving distance.

So what are we doing with all that money we're raking in by swindling the citizenry? Aircraft carriers that are stated to go into active service in less than two years that don't even have functional catapults or arresting wires. Useless jet fighters that can't even be deployed to desert climates without air-conditioned hangars. Bullshit ICBM interception system that can't even calculate parabolic trajectories correctly. "Tax breaks" aka cash gifts to companies that weren't paying taxes to begin with.

What exactly are we getting for the taxes that we pay out of our pockets? Our waters are becoming undrinkable. Our national defense is being consolidated down to a handful of botique, dysfunctional Made In Boeing hardware. We're not getting the medical care that we need. Our freedom of speech is being eroded.

This is merely yet another link in a long chain of government injustice sausage we're being forced to swallow. How many more of these are we going to be forced to swallow?

No.

I admit we need solutions to make investors pump more money into infrastructure, but the current ideas will prevent exactly that.

It's only an attempt by already established ISPs to become even stronger and push competition out of the market, whilst that is what is being advertised.

>>61624839

>>
>>61629668
In the US this is the case.

Consider that the USA has no competition in the broadband space, at all.
So to ensure freedom of information to the people you can
A. Prohibit the ISPs from molesting your data
B. Prohibit the ISPs from forming monopolies

If you choose option A, you get OP's situation - that's the end of it, NN doesn't enforce unlimited datacaps, just no 'funny business' from the ISP in how that datacap is spent.
Option B instead allows ISPs to do all sorts of stupid shit to your data, but it also allows for others to compete and if there is a niche wanting unrestricted, unfettered access - then a provider will exist to service them.

NN can and has been used to continue the current monopoly system by arguing that breakup of said monopolies isn't required, due to NN - so if you choose option A, you'll eventually end up with 100GB datacaps (that you can spend in whatever way you want!) and all ISPs owned by Cable companies.
>>
>>61623099
i live in east ky and the best they offer anyone is 100gb a month. Yes you can.
Fight.

YOU PAID OVER ONE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS FOR A FIBRE NETWORK IN THE 90s
WHERE IS YOUR OPEN ACCESS FIBRE NETWORK?

Australia successfully fought SEVERAL TIMES so that open access would be given on the networks that the Australian Taxpayer had paid for-
- First in ~1993 when Optus was allowed to become a second private carrier
- Later in ~2001-2 when Tesltra was forced to open their last-mile DSL network to any ISP
- Then in ~05 we fought and won SSS/LSS (Line Sharing Service, so other ISPs could provide DSL via their own DSLAMS installed in Tesltra's exchanges (in TEBA space) on Tesltra's (The Australian Taxpayers...) Phone lines. (Different to ULL in that you still needed to pay for a Phone service)
- In ~06-07 we finally won ULL
- 07-08 NBN Construction also starts, a completely open access wholesale last-mile network, NBNCo doesn't not provide internet services, only last-mile connectivity to actual ISPs (RSPs as they're now known)

You can fight for open access too, you already paid for it - this is the key to winning, The Taxpayers already funded this.

the cost of electricity is negligible though. realistically every gigabit sent costs less than a single penny. Yet if you break 1TB with comcast they charge you $10 for every 50GB over.

That's 2000% increase simply because they can charge whatever they feel like, and they set that bandwidth cap low enough that SOME of their customers will hit it, and either pay $50 a month for unlimited, or occasionally they'll pay the $10 per 50GB over.
