CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming
GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM
General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

If your stuff will fit, get an mITX board and a slim case along the lines of this (just an example): https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811108065 and then, since this is just a temporary solution for travel that you won't be plugging in, fill the interior with some kind of no-mess shipping foam.

get a ryzen 7 1700 and a decent aircooler. AiOs suck especially if you don't need them. Louder than a good aircooler, and one part more to fail. Crappy pumps often shit the bed after a few years.
If you cheap out on a few other components you could squeece an i7 7700K in there if you really want maximum gaming performance and got a matching screen to feed.
With the GPU it's probably worth it to wait until monday for the unlikely case that Vega is competitive. Even if it isn't it might drive prices down. Or it won't. Anyways, no harm in waiting two days.

they don't really get much optimization anymore, and the 3GB VRAM hurt in many new titles. Here in central yurop you can get about 120-150 eurobucks for them, depending on model and condition. Hawaii cards (R9 290(X)/R9 390(X)) sell for insane prices right now due to miners, and that has also driven up the prices for other used cards. If you want to get rid of them, now is the time.
>>61614601
yes, it still got two dies with two CCX each after all. I don't know if the inter die GMI connects are affected by RAM speed.
>Even if we pitted Radeon RX Vega against the mightier GeForce 1080Ti, my money would still bet on a similar outcome: that you wouldn’t really be able to tell the difference with variable refresh rate. >>61614670
>But I feel like I'd be wasting a lot of the potential a Ryzen 7 1700 has
Who cares? It's in the same pricerange and might be useful down the road considering all consoles (and future ones) are just x86 PCs with locked down OS and 8 really shitty weak CPU cores. Pretty much all developers are optimizing for multithread performance, and even intel is switching to 6 core consumer CPUs next generation. We're at the old dual vs quadcore point again i think. I'd personally go for that one instead of an i7 right now. But i'll probably be stuck on my old 2600K for another three years or so.
If you want to squeeze a 7700K in there, get a cheaper mainboard like the ASUS Z170 pro, a decent aircooler like the alpenfoehn brocken (is that available in the US?) and you got your 100 bucks for the 7700K saved. Could also save a bit on the case. I#d get a larger, normal SATA SSD, M.2 doesn't really make a difference for consumer use cases.
>>61614787
nothing is inherently wrong with it, it's just that AMD provides a better product in that pricerange. The i7 7700K makes kinda sense because it provides slightly better gaming performance right now, the i5 is just stuck at a bad price point with competition that outperforms it.

get a corsair RMi, it's far superior to the RMx series and only like 10 bucks more. You could save a bit on the mainboard without problems. I'd get a good aircooler but if you absolutely want an AiO you're doing nothing wrong.
I'd personally go for an R7 1700 but if you just want maximum gaming performance right now the 7700K is a valid choice too.

they're really common here in germany. Their upper lines are really good, the lower end stuff not really (powerzone ones aren't good, pure power 10 is OK, straight power 10 is good, dark power pro 10 and 11 are top notch). Same for the fans as for the rest of the tech. Their high end PSUs and even their medium tier stuff comes with really good fans, the low end stuff not really

An NH-D15 is better than the dark rock pro if it fits in your case and is about the same price, at least here in germany. Some people find the brown noctua fans ugly though, but they're about as good as fans get, and the cooler itself is really good. Also noctua as about the best customer support you can get, they'll always send you new mounting brackets for new sockets should you ever need them to take the cooler to a new system.

>>61615742
designing a new arch from scratch is always risky, even when with less limited financial structure as AMD had back then. Go read about intels NetBurst or Itanium. In addition to that AMD was never able to gain a larger market share even when they had superior products because of intels anticompetitive behavior. Getting intel to shell out a few billions for that a decade later doesn't remove the damage that was done by that.

the GPU is more than enough for stuff like that. Ask him if he really doesn't want to shell out 50 bucks more for a 120GB SSD, it's the best improvement you can get for every day use. Not games, those belong on an HDD in a budget build.

The i7 has better gaming performance now, the R7 should live longer. You don't do anything wrong with either of them I think, as long as you're only gaming. If mulyithreaded workloads get in the equation the decision becomes easy.

>>61616300
With GSync?
>>61616233
What interesting screens are coming out that you think would be better?
>>61616312
No, AMDs version o think. But adaptive refresh rate only really shines at low FPS anyways.
DP1.3 and HDMI2.2 will hit next year, both should come with a adaptive refresh rate specification. Hopefully nvidia adopts that and we get rid of the current vendor lock in.
Also OLED 4K 144Hz fucking when?
>>61616346
4K 120Hz. Nothing is gonna feed it but you can lower resolution for games. HDR is coming up, local dimming and thus blacks are getting better, even for non OLED screens with traditional panels.
So basically two new standards, HDMI2.2/DP1.3 allowing for 4k@100+Hz and HDR giving you more colors. To me it looks like a bad time to buy a high end monitor.
>>61616259
I've got DT770 and HD600's, both are a comfy choice.
>>61615485
wow something i can edit, you're trying too hard
>>61616402
but would any graphics card be able to 4K high details above 60 fps?
>>61616436
Depends on the game, for demanding studd most likely not. But its still nice to have for less demanding stuff and desktop works. Just lower resolution to 1440p or anything of your choice for more demanding games.
But that point is moot if your current screen is crap anyways. Don't know what you have. But you don't buy a high end PC to play games at 800x600%75Hz
>>61612090
I have a 144hz freesync display and a gtx 1080. When I get 60-100fps I feel like it was smoother when I had my rx 480. Is this placebo or was it actually smoother because freesync was enabled? Will I benefit at all if I get a g-sync display instead?
>>61616374
I hate the Nvidia jew tax but a good thing is that it standardizes the way adaptive sync is implemented. I have a good experience with Freesync but my friend absolutely hates it.
Turns out he bought a monitor with a badly implemented Freesync monitor which was cheap. Thus his monitor had a narrow range where Freesync worked. 45-60 Hz. Drop below that range and the game started stuttering and tearing.

I am considering buying a 1440p 144 Hz G-sync monitor atm w/1080 ti + ryzen.
>>61616468
Effect shouldn't be that big with a 144Hz screen since the delay for the next chance to display a fresh frame is minimal. Probably still noteable,no idea. Wouldn't get a gsync screen now since you have a nice monitor. Hopefully nvidia adopts an open standard with HDMI2.2 and we get rid of the vendor lock in
>>61616468
Adaptive sync helps disguise frame drops very well that why it looks smoother. If you constantly get high FPS with the 1080, it would look better. Yes the G-sync display helps.
>>61616474
Sure. The thing is, the open standard is there. Nvidia (or Intel, and or anyone else) could support it and then use a gsync like label for monitors that aren't complete crap and have ranges that provide fully functional LFC. AMD is kinda trying to do that with freesync 2.0 I think. Adaptive Sync as open DP/HDMI standard is awesome, just got to use it properly.

Hello, /pcbg/! I'm not incredibly familiar with PC building, and I'm looking to upgrade a PC I bought some years ago to speed it up as well as provide some gaming capabilities.
The PC I have right now is a small form factor Dell Optiplex 755 that is getting a bit worn as time goes on, and isn't able to keep up with my needs for school/work-related projects and wants for entertainment.
With my income being a bit limited, my current budget for upgrade parts is ~$250, so the parts I'm considering buying are here:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mmtPBP
I found the video card on Amazon for $69.99, but I'm not confident that I've got all of these parts right/getting the best parts with my budget. Any help is greatly appreciated, and I'm sorry if my lack of understanding/low budget makes things difficult for anyone.

Sure, but you can still use your label and only certify monitors that meet a set of requirements. Call of gsync open or whatever. If its a 30-144Hz range for example its awesome.
Also it will eventually get better I think. I mean all new scalers comewoth this feature for basically free, and monitor manufacturers are starting to use it more and more widespread. With HDMI joining in it will probably get widely adopted in TVs too.
>>61616594
We don't know but the statements coming out aren't very encouraging.
The good:
It is feels smoother than the Nvidia equivalent
The bad:
>That said, the biggest difference between the two systems was the price based simply on the monitor itself,
It was a blind test with a very specific setting that AMD made to favor them
My guess? It will be priced around the 1080.

Buying used is an option, yes, I'm just being (possibly too) cautious about getting a faulty product. Are there any websites/resources for finding reliable used parts? If so, I'll definitely be taking a look on them.
I'd asked a few buds of mine for suggestions regarding parts to get, and they insisted I get a dedicated GPU and dual core CPU for playing games from around 2011/12 and better speeds regarding digital art rendering.

Yes, they were wrong,at least for that budget. Check the tests of the A12 9800, or the other APUs of that line. 4 cores instead of two, and stronger ones at that (successor to the CPU you choose),and the integrated graphics chip, together with the right memory,is stronger than the dedicated GPU you chose. Ideal for budget builds like yours, and OCs really well with stock cooler too.
There are no sites for reliable used parts, just eBay. Buy PayPal got good end user protection.

This. You buy a 3200 kit of RAM, it's locked to 2133. You have to go into the BIOS and change it to 3200. You can't really "Overclock" RAM, per say. You can't make it have a speed faster than the speed you bought.

My old 680 is a blower style fan, modeled after the reference design, so I'm not that worried about the noise since I'm used to it. But the thought of 75+ degrees under load is killing me. Should I be worried about the house fire meme?

interesting. so if i buy a 3000 RAM that means it's at 2133, and if i go into the uefi, the max i can get it to is 3000? so if i wanted 3200 i do in fact have to buy 3200?
sorry if this is obvious haven't looked inot this at all.

I think you COULD OC to 3200 with 3000, but it's down to luck how successful you are with that since it's not official.

8-16GB is plenty for just gaming. 32 is beyond overkill

VM requires you to pass through hardware
it would be 8gb stick per OS
>>61618591
the extra ram is not for gaming, it's mainly for the multimedia I like to do on top of gaming. I don't really like having to shut down my session of photoshop/after effects/whatever if I quickly want to play some games or vice versa.

switch to ryzen for more cores
you have to assign cores to your VM and 2 wont cut it for games nowadays
make sure the mobo supports IOMMU

X-Plane 11 has a minimum recommended RAM of 16GB, and that's with the shit low detail stock graphics.

I'm building a VERY low end pc, I don't plan to play all the newer stuff, if it runs, good.
Already got some parts, just gonna buy what's missing, I would appreciate some opinions and advice, since it's my first build.
M5a78l-plus/usb3
FX-8300
8GB
GTX 1050
Should I change something? Can I run some decent stuff?

It's 2009 + 8, you need a 16GB kit of RAM. Trust me, you'll think me later. Also, splerg for a 1050 ti if you can.

Thank. Seriously, 16GB was a meme a few years ago but it's not anymore.
