I use 10 at work and 7 at home. I've used both extensively, but 7 just feels so much better. 10 feels too... idk, microsofty? It's loaded with ads, annoying popups and shit. Opening up the start bar feels like you just opened msn.com on internet explorer

If you want to stop "Antimalware service executable" and "Telemetry service" taking up 90% disk usage out of nowhere and delaying program startups, you'll have to use privacy tools.
Unfortunately, they are hit or miss since you'll either end up accidentally blocking Skype through the firewall or break the indexing (and Search feature since Cortana was purposefully embedded into SearchUI.exe).
Just stick to 7 until a proper replacement comes.

What are even the downsides to 8? Classic Shell got rid of the metro interface and afte disabling hybrid boot it's basically a faster win 7 that doesn't ask you to confirm after you delete something. Plus a button to restart explorer.

I couldn't see one thing relevant to desktop usage so I went with it anyways.

The only issue I can see with 8.1 is that most themes require using the old explorer.
