so it's useless to most people

It's not preinstalled with a massive familiar userer base.
Most people won't even notice if you make it look like windows 7 and make sure it runs youtube and facebook.

because the year of the BSD desktop is coming faster at this rate.

It's already here and you don't even know it.

>normies everywhere are using Ubuntu
>some laptop manufacturers are starting to offer the option to have Ubuntu preinstalled
>every single IoT meme device these days is running GNU/Linux or Android
>Sony is looking into Sailfish OS
There's so much free and open source software out there. We're winning.
>>
>>61583881
Because it would do more than just make 'the man' nervous, People would probably start to self manage as a whole if they could manage linux at large. People would have less kids and kind of plan out how the world should be and stop driving so much and not care about the events surrounding inflated leather bags on fields of fake grass and the emblems that somehow make them care more about it.

I'm happy with my Linux installation.
It's commonly mentioned that Linux isn't a real desktop OS because it doesn't have Photoshop, (((Microsoft))) Office and computer games.
But to that I say:
I am not a designer, so I don't need Photoshop (but I accept if designers don't want to use Linux and prefer to use Mac because of this, still no reason to use (((Windows))) though).
LibreOffice and OpenOffice work perfectly fine.
I play games on console.

Checkmate Windows fags.

Let's see.

1. Anything related to graphics is still not in a good state. Shit is slow and insufficient.
2. Big companies that make some software that is essential to a lot of people look away due to market share which is exceptionally low
3. Hackintosh has been getting somewhat more popular thanks to the increasing compatibility of third party hardware and community support
4. The "gaming" boom of linux a few years ago happened and it didn't cause the intended effect, vulkan is still green and half of newer releases by indie developers don't come out on any platforms other than Windows
5. DE/Distro fragmentation problem getting worse and worse every single year
6. Some people legit still don't know what Linux is (I don't mean that it's a kernel, I mean that it exists at all) and use Windows because that's what came with their laptop

Sorry but it's true. A few years ago I considered getting a laptop just to play around with a linux distro or another. Oh,

7. Inferior power management. Overall.

Seriously I wouldn't be putting it down like this in my arch days, half a decade ago. But there's no year of the Linux desktop unless both MS and Apple fuck up 10 times as much as they did as of late.
>>
>>61587982

Linux have been used on mobile phone long before android. Also Linux isn't the only FOSS OS with arm compatibility, so your point is pure bullshit.

But it's here. Year 2017 is the year of Linux desktop.

Linux market share has grown 15 months straight now and is expected to cross the 3% mark this year for the first time in history. Some people have estimated that Linux is going to pass 5% in early 2018. Before late 2018 Linux is estimated to pass MacOS (6.8%).

Linux use on desktops is only going to grow from now on.
>>
>>61583881

>>61583881

Have you tried using it? It's total trash.

Not a single web browser on Linux has hardware accelerated video decoding and the general performance is just awful, scrolling a simple page in chrome is night and day difference between Linux and Windows.

Blame drivers or hardware as much as you like, GNUmales, but I paid good money for decent hardware and will use whatever gives me full use of what I bought.

You need to learn how to drive before you can become a chofer. If you don't know how to manually optimize your os to get the most out of your computer performancewise, then your opinion about using linux has no weight. You need to gitgud son.

>>61587982
Man you are really dumb, I don't even feel a need to rebuttal any of your points
>>
>>61583881
It won't fully happen until all the major laptop makers start shipping Linux. Most normalfags don't know how to install an OS and never will so they use what comes with it. We are getting closer every year though, Dell recently started a new line of developer laptops that ship with Linux.
>>
>>61583896
Illya is upset because you lied.
>>
because linux advocates don't want it to. they want it to be a niche OS for powerusers.
>>
>>61583881
Linux has enough retards already, Ubuntu and Arch are totally retarded.
>>
>>61583881
Because windows fills the desktop niche quite nicely as is, and linux isn't that much better than windows from a functionality standpoint

Let me put it this way: why did you switch to linux?

If you answered "it's free and open source software software", or "muh rice", then you just proved my point

Neither of those things have any practical value to normies, who use their computers to play games and browse the internet.

It doesn't help that there isn't really a single os that you can point to and say "that's linux".

There's hundreds if not thousands of linux distros, and most of them look and feel radically different. Opensuse, for example, looks nothing like ubuntu, and ubuntu looks nothing like puppy linux.

Sure, we have android now, but I don't really feel comfortable calling it a linux distro, and its also not really a desktop os
>>
Linux desktop won't happen as long as there's no top distro.

People don't want to hear that Ubuntu is an "entry level" distro. They want one system and that's it. They don't wanna hear that this one has better drivers, or is more up to date, or doesn't include something that's bad, or this, or that, or the other thing.

Same with DEs. 20 of them. No, that's not right. You make a really, really good one that can be fully customizable and runs on toasters, but also has all the potential for the newest features in desktops. No DE offers this. Not one.

>Fast
>Not ancient
>Fully customizable

Pick 2 really

If only the sole problem with Linux was the shitty default font rendering

But as others have pointed out before me, it isn't.

Distro and DE fragmentation has to end. There is no other way.
>>
>>61583881
The countdown timer resets everytime someone asks about it.
>>
>>61593973
Shitty default font rendering depends on which distro

Ubuntu has patched font rendering, and one of the best. Some other distros can be patched for that, openSUSE is surprisingly easy to turn into that as well.

I mean shit, I want to switch away from Windows and one of the reasons is precisely -because- of the poor font rendering on it. I'm about to fuck off because I returned to W8.1 after a while and even after tuning cleartype and spending hours with mactype I cannot really have a decent experience here.
