Why is Source Mage so unpopular on /g/ ? Is this place full of normies or are there any OG's left

Why do you insist on shilling this shit so hard?
I have half a mind to think that you're actually anti Source Mage and know full well that doing what you have been will make us all hate it.

Not at all, I'm just saying that what you're doing and how you're going about it makes people here less likely to check out Source Mage.
But if your goal instead is to turn people off and drive them away, you're doing a great job.

At the contrary.

Source Mage is nice advanced distribution. To all bash hackers out there, you should try it, it's really fun!

I've always been interested in the distro but I can't see anything that makes it stand out aside from the package manager. If I took Debian and used the alias command on apt couldnt I make something similar with more packages and better support?

does anyone else read that as Smeagol

Not stable, yet.

That's kind of the point.

I like SMGL, but Gentoo remains superior

Interesting thing about Source Mage is that it's package manager is written in bash.
That's intriguing.

For those who are wondering,
SMGL installation process:

>boot a live Ubuntu (or whatever) USB drive
>go to SMGL website and download compressed archive of the base system
>partition and mount partition(s)
>extract the archive onto the new partition(s)
>chroot, set root passwd, hostname, configure network and locale, write fstab, install grub/lilo
>reboot
Congratulations, you have now installed Source Mage GNU/Linux.
(took me about 15 min)

Don't worry, it's easy (easier than Arch even), the install guide will hold your hand through the whole process.
And for anything you don't understand, a good web search engine is your friend.
Just do the chroot method. since the regular live ISO method guide is out of date.

When you boot into SMGL for the first time, you're probably gonna want to update sorcery, spell lists and then rebuild/update the build tools (gcc and whatnot), the kernel and finally rest of the system.

If you're compiling a new kernel from kernel.org (recommended), be sure to `sorcery hold linux`, so that it doesn't rebuild the SMGL kernel again when you rebuild the system.
>>
>>61589714
>sorcery hold linux
In the postinstallation guide they signal something like this for gcc if I remember.
>>
>>61589982
g++*, for a different reason
https://sourcemage.org/Install/ISO#post-install
>update essential spells for compiling (when gettext/glibc are updated to use your architecture specs) by using the command (compile in order):
# cast -c binutils gcc g++ gettext glibc
>Note: due to circular dependency of spell "gmp" (gcc depends on it), the command above may not be successful. In that case, you can temporarily disable casting "g++" with commands in following order:
# sorcery hold g++
# cast -c binutils gcc
# sorcery unhold g++
# cast -c g++ gettext glibc

I didn't have to do that though.

Source Mage, you don't learn one specific distro, you learn what's going on under the hood. Often people refer SMGL as the LFS (Linux From Scratch) with a package manager.

Did i do something wrong with extracting smgl? I basicslly followed the guide on the website using archlinux live iso

Are they not included in the sourcemage tar?

Isn't Slackware like a totally different use case? Anyway, imagine they give you the change to make slack more minimal, but the package manager actually solves dependencies.

I have Ubuntu on my laptop and plan on keeping it that way.
I have a bunch of scavenged lenovo towers though, and I want source mage on all of them.
How do I got about installing source mage via the chrooting guide on the website? I can barely understand it.

So whats the gist of this thing? Its basically gentoo but with bash build scripts? Where do the software sources come from?

Straight from their respective developer's websites if I am not mistaken.

>>61597049
Like other anon said, is more like a Linux From Scratch with a package manager than Gentoo.

Reminder that python is literal cancer https://wikileaks.org/vault7/document/Aeris-UsersGuide/page-1/

Get rid of anything python, if your package manager use python you are ool.

I'd rather have a bunch of containers that are functional and don't have python or bash installed then full systems that are vulnerable to this shit
