This thread is dedicated to people that must use windows. Yes, you shouldn't use windows but some people more or less are forced for many reasons (such as familiarity with editing software, etc).
If you are one of the unlucky dumb people like me and can't migrate to Linux, you have two options: 1) Windows 7, 2) Windows 8/8.1
both versions can be found for 15~20 dollars on chinese/japanese sellers online with authentic (OEM)key

>What is the difference?
Windows 7 is considered the ''best'' however Windows 8/8.1 is slightly faster and you can disable telemetry and updates just like you would do in Windows 7 .....so basically other than some bundled games lacking on W8 these versions are identical.
Bonus: you can mount iso by default on W8.

>What about windows 10?
you should never run windows 10. Telemetry and data collecting can't be disabled ever. As long as you connect to the internet you'll be sending data to Microsoft.
>b-but there is a powershell comand...
No. You can't. There are more than 146 data collecting bundled in windows 10 and it's impossible to stop it.

>So only dumb people like you should use windows 7/8/8.1?
No. If you want to play older games on free trial(piratebay) or DRM-Free most likely it won't run on Mac/Linux/BSD so the best alternative is to simply buy a machine for windows 7/8/8.1 or dual-boot
>>
>But Linux Mint and Ubuntu are easy
Yes and also they are data collecting just like Windows 10, specially Mint which leaked the data of thousands of users and allowed a corrupted/malware iso to be hosted on their website because lack of security
Ubuntu improved since 14.04 by removing adware/spyware but still you can't be sure they won't do this again in the future.

>what about Antivirus?
contrary to popular /g/ myth antivirus software is essential on Windows and you can't rely on windows firewall either. This lead us to the ONLY solution: Internet Security(paid). There is simply no alternative.

How to choose your internet firewall+antivirus protection:

im in process on changing from a standard win10 version to either enterprise or back to 7

Problem is that editing software brands claimed their "windows 10 only", is this still true or i stick to LTSB?

BTW so LTSB doesnt have the botnets? not that i care since there might already be enough of my info archived but why is LTSB so different in that sense?
>>

What specifically does antivirus have to do with networking?
>>
Thankfully I already have been using 8.1 for a while. For me it's -the- Windows version, I don't care about the fisher price shit when there's a free software that replaces that perfectly and doesn't exactly leave that much of a footprint at all
>>
>>61579661
AutoKMS shouldn't need to make any outside network connections...
>>

>Problem is that editing software brands claimed their "windows 10 only",
It's false. It will work in w7/w8.1
>>61579740
>LTSB doesnt have the botnets
It has AutoKMS and almost all of the hidden data collecting that no service or firewall can block. It's impossible to remove all data collecting from Windows 10.

6th generation of processors, also known as Skylake work on windows 7 and 8.1 but the 7th gen has some problems..

Actually, the older the game, the more likely it would run better under WINE than on a modern windows system.
>>
>>61579550
For a lot of uses a vm works really well. Particularly if you only use an application or two. You can fire up the vm and do other things while your windows updates and restarts and updates etc. Also depending on the app a lot of the older versions might do the job you need on older versions of windows and you can take it offline. A bonus is the old operating system can run at modern speeds. Like win2k or win98 whatever running at 4gHz. Also ram drives work in a vm and actually access the ram. I get a lot of audio editing done in a win2k vm running the audio software in a ram drive.

This post and thread has a lot of
>literally the ONLY option
in it. When there are many ways to go about things if you are willing to experiment with the options available and not get caught up in various ideologies too much.

If you don't like video games and don't need video/audio software exclusive to windows you should never touch a windows os

it has more to do with not wanting microsoft to "update" your system when it runs just fine, but they do it anyway, and after they do, you've lost another 14 GB of storage on your device

>>
>>61581992
Hard to tell where you're coming from. If you're using an old version of windows, there's no need to connect it online.

I think you're trying to be instructive. I'm just talking about what I've found that works for me. I don't care what other people do. So I just say 'you can take it offline' and I suppose others have the sense to know that they definitely should'.

I fall into 'audio' part of your windows use case. Other than that I wouldn't touch it unless I worked somewhere that required it and then I wouldn't put any personal information in it or look up things for my own interest.

Depends. If your editing software utilizes DirectX 12, you will be missing any and all DirectX 12 features by moving away from Windows 10.
Other than that it should work just fine, but you won't get any help from customer support if you for any reason have issues with the software on another version of Windows.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/configuration/manage-connections-from-windows-operating-system-components-to-microsoft-services
>To prevent Windows from sending any data to Microsoft, configure telemetry at the Security level, turn off Windows Defender telemetry and MSRT reporting, and turn off all of these connections.

Do you really think that Microsoft is just flat out lying in their documentation?

Every single article I've seen about Windows sending "telemetry" data "even though we disabled everything" was done with wrong configuration.
The twitter guy (pic related) literally didn't even configure the main telemetry setting correctly and ran his tests with full telemetry enabled.
The voat guy thinks that toggling the basic options offered during setup counts as disabling telemetry.
Many others just say "we disabled it" or "we used this shitty tool we found on github".

Another thing worth noting is that not all network traffic is telemetry. There's also windows updates, certificate updates, time syncing, activation checks, driver updates, network connectivity checks, local network discovery, etc.

You clearly can't read and don't understand how Group Policy works. Setting that to disabled means random users can control the telemetry setting. Setting it to enabled means it's forced to use the Security setting, regardless of what the random user wants.

Which is a shame, since your post is decent otherwise.
>>
>>61591799
I assume you've read the image wrong.
The left is what the twitter guy configured, which is wrong. The right is what he should have configured.

If you set it to disabled (or not configured) then random users can pick between "Basic", "Enhanced", and "Full".
Enabling it and setting it to "Security" is what you want to do.

>Windows 8/8.1 is slightly faster
Exactly where? For example all encode operations with (if cpu) Sandy Bridge/SB-E/Ivy-E or Piledriver and with (if gpu) novidya Gtx 660/750/980, are faster on NT6.1 (and in some corner cases they're faster on NT6.0, that is Vista/Server 2008). Same is true for zenver1, with 10 included, except maybe on some brand new software or a gaym.

Yes, 8.1/Server 2012 R2 is less fugly than 10, but that is not a great merit. Performance is another thing, but ui and ux have not improved from NT5.1 (we're not talking about fisher price theme - or the theme engine even - here, that could and can be disabled).
