I have my old busted up and worn down T420. It has
>core i7-2620m
>1600x900 screen

I bought a new Mint condition Thinkpad T420 that has
>core i5-2520m
>1366x768 screen

Since both CPUs are 2c/4t, is it worth the time and effort to swap out the chips? I mean I know the swap process isn't terribly complicated. Same can be said with the screen. Will a 768p screen offer better battery life than the 900p one? Is it even possible to swap the screens without having to buy more parts?
>>
Just got my T430 i5-3320m 8gb ram 500gb with Nvidia GFX, my first thinkpad, and I am in love with it. Honestly has been far more capable than I expected and the screen hasn't bugged me as much as I thought it would, though of course I will be keeping an eye out for the Alienware replacement screen. Just wanted to thank you guys for the advice (even though I know a lot of you despise this device) and your overall help.

While i'm here, does anyone know anything I can do to take advantage of an unused ExpressCard slot?
>>
>>61577793
wouldnt it be easier to just replace the lid and lower case and keyboard?
>>61577946

>>
>>61578038

How hard is it to make an eGPU setup? I think I've got a slot in my x230i and I've got a 7870 I'm not using any more
>>
>>61578098
you'd still need a psu for your gpu and the gdc beast.
you'd have to read up on it a bit
>>
>>61577793

Just swap the cases?
>>
>>61578038
>>61578201
Because the case on my old T420 is beat to hell. It's missing its Thinkpad/Lenovo labels. And the 2 "hooks" that keep the lid shut are broken.
>>
>>61577793

So I am on my 2nd charger and I just got the new one yesterday for my t420. The second one is starting to not work randomly. Is it chink chargers? like should I order a specific one?
Also the chargers pop very loudly when I plug them in and when they aren't working they no longer pop.
>>

Depends on your bag(-sleeve).

I have both and normally use the flat one with the 72Wh for backup.

That doesn't seem right.

Maybe your port shorts or something, causing damage to the chargers?

Its happens no matter where I plug it in. At my house, at work, in public, etc.
I just started to accept it as normal. Theres a chance the adapters themselves are fine, but the cable that runs from the port to the adapter seem to be shorting out or something.
>>61578698
I got the one with the best reviews and prime shipping on amazon and to replace the cheap as possible ebay one I'm replacing and it does it too.

So this isn't normal for thinkpad chargers and I have managed to find the same problem twice unluckily with two different products?

>>
>>61578737
I generally wouldn't risk non genuine parts for the charger because many thinkpad chargers are interchangeable between models and finding a used but genuine cord off ebay isn't that hard or expensive.

So I have been searching for a cheap modern Thinkpad, and I've found a L540 locally for $125. On the bright side, it looks like it's in good condition. Unfortunately -
> Cheaper build quality (L-series)
> Celeron Processor
> 4 Gb's of Ram
> 768 Tn screen
> EC is missing the protective insert
Since Im planning on upgrading all of the parts anyhow, what should I offer him? 90$?

>>

Why even bother? I doubt that processor is even socketed.
>>
>>61581106
ULV processors for the L450 are BGA
In the end you get chromebook tier specs with some extra ports.

Not worth the money used when you can get a T420 or T430 for a bit more and properlt upgrade it fully.
>>
>>61581187

Due to the shitty cooling, the best processor I can put in is a i7 4700mq, which I plan on doing
I really enjoy working on laptops, so this is a wet dream to me
>>
>>61581106
I figured my goal would make my initial post too long, but I'll post it here anyhow
I want to add in an i7 4700mq, a Gtx 970(egpu), a 3k ips screen and some more Ram. I want it to be a gayming station while docked, and I was planning on underclocking and disabling two cores while unplugged so it's a long-lasting laptop.
>>
I just got my T400 in and I am surprised to say that it's more comfy than my X220T. I am a little disappointed in my X220T now. Is it because of the tablet design?
>>
Has anyone with dedicated nvidia graphics tried overclocking their display?

90hz should be easily doable
>>
Does anyone run Windows 7 on a T420? How does it compare in terms of performance to a fairly minimal Linux install?

I have:
>i7-2620
>16GB RAM
>SSD

Wondering if that's enough to cut it on an older machine. Curious in trying out Win7 again after years and I just came into possession of an SSD with it installed.
>>
>>61581599
Didn't it come with Windows 7?
It'll perform fine. Those specs are good enough for even winbloat 8.1 to run smoothly
>>
>>61582010
Cool, that's good to know.
And no, I bought it used without an HD. I prefer just using my own and cycling them through different machines.

So I decided to eat lunch at a nice restaurant near my office today, I'm bogged down writing this report so I decide to take my company laptop with me (T420 in mint condition).

I'm working away and enjoy my lunch when out of the corner of my eye, I see a figure walking towards my table. It's a guy wearing a fedora and a FSF t-shirt. He tries to strike up conversation about my T420, complimenting its excellent condition and 7 row keyboard.

I was so taken aback by this, I had an utterly shocked look on my face. So this is /g/ in real life. I wanted to remain incognito, so I said "It's my work computer. It's OLD".

He scrunched up his face with a look of utter disgust. I saw him walk away muttering something about "normies ruined ThinkPad, they don't know the joys of having a 7 row keyboard and a magnesium alloy rollcage..."

Decided to make a quick exit, on the way out I noticed him using a X60 with a libreboot sticker on it, running some sort of riced tiling WM with an anime wallpaper. He was arguing across the table with a Mac user. Overheard something along the lines of "Macs are locked down pieces of trash...Louis Rossman hates them"

My X220 is making horrible whining noises. I believe it's coming from the fan. What do I do? I cant have my Thinkpad over the minimum performance level otherwise the fan revs and makes a whining noise.
>>
>>61585771
Clean it, replace thermal paste, and check the CPU temperatute with RealTemp or a similar application, assuming you haven't done so already. Whiny fans are almost always a sign of heat. If everything turns up normal when your laptop is dust-free, perhaps your fan is failing; would replace it if you can get one cheaply. But that just sounds like overheating to me.

Yeah because he's gay. The first time I disassembled my X220 I had to do it too and it wasn't mentioned anywhere either.

You have to take some small pliers and turn them as if they were normal screws. This is a thing you also have to do on certain PC cases in order to put the standoffs in a different position for different motherboards. Or if you want to somehow replace those on GPU coolers as well.

I highly doubt in-house techs at the corporate entities that buy these machines in bulk ever changed the paste - so when you and me get these the paste is already 5 years old

didn't mean to go on tangent though, i honestly never checked the temps. i just know it got to the point where it was discomforting against skin at times.

Guy who bought a x230 tablet here need some help.

After upgrading everything with the Lenovo Bridge app, the keyboard stopped working, I clean installed Win 10 but it still isnt working.

I found out the issue is that it registers Fn key as "pressed" from boot, and it wont let me type since Fn is pressed (f8/f9 change the brightness)

The key itself isnt stuck so thats not the issue, right now to fix it I swapped it with Ctrl key in Bios menu and plug an external keyboard, press left Ctrl on it and it frees the key and lets me work.

I wanna try installing a older version of the Bios, someone here has an x230 tablet win 10 and can tell me what version he has?

Or should I just install win 7 and win 7 bios?

Seriously, I barely visit /g/ anymore because of the same fucking shit being reposted 100000times. How can you people sit here all damn day?

yeah thunderbolt adapters are way too expensive. they might get cheaper in the future now that manufacturers don't pay as much (anything?) to intel per unit.

an expresscard adapter is $50, a good psu $10. that's not a bad price (before card) to make an old thinkpad run games *fairly well* that it couldn't before. dollar wise it helps if you already have the gpu laying around. ask a friend if he's getting rid of an old card. if you have to spend money on a card, just get a 750 ti or 1050 (with older driver). anything better is wasted on the single pcie lane

Yeah, doesn't work.

Windows found most of the drivers (WiFi was working natively, iGPU updated itself, Fingerprint reader worked natively and similar bullshit).

I only had to manually update the Multi Card Reader and the Ericsson Mobile Broadband thing (and the SSD by choice for optimisation).

I still don't know what this is, there's no chipset driver on Lenovo's website, so I think maybe it's that and I need to get it from Intel's site. I hoped some Anon here knows (tried googling around forums also)

My new thinkpad T420 finally came! Came with a WD blue 500GB hard drive. My current thinkpad has a 500fb WD as well along with a 256GB mSATA SSD. Should I just go with 2 hard drives in this new T420? Or use my ultrabay to have 2x500GB HDDs and the 256GB SSD?

Or should I just keep the DVD drive and run 2 hard drives only? Is a DVD drive even useful when on the go anymore?
I intend to fully encrypt the mechanical drive(s) via veracrypt anyway.

Poor Europoor user here, needing a good cheap Thinkpad (with classic keyboard) for typing.

Found a X201, with 6GB, 240SSD and a spare battery (new) from a local auction site. No clue if it has an IPS screen or not but I don't really care too much about. It looks to be in excellent condition.

User is selling it for €160; how much should I get it down for?
>>
>>61608885
That's pounds or euros? Either way, see if you can get the seller down to 120 of your funny money. IPS screen or no, try not to pay more than $100 for a used thinkpad. Especially one that old. That new battery is attractive though.

I mean I could, but why? The mechanical storage drive would simply be for backup and storing data I don't want compromised God forbid the laptop is stolen. Again. The SSD is only for speedier response time and boot. Thinking I'm going to go with 2 hard drives, keep the DVD drive, and turn the spare 500GB mechanical into an external with a $20 usb3 enclosure. Use it as offline backup for the laptop.
>>
>>61609269
Whatever is cheapest that meets your needs. Don't care about owning the laptop for more than a year? Acer usually has the best price:performance ratio but their build quality is trash. My buddy's Acer aspire with 4th Gen i5 and Nvidia 850m in it is still kicking without issue but the plastic is worn to shit. He spent $459.
>>
>>61609326
I'm not saying you shouldn't use mechanical drives, I'm saying you should not stick them INSIDE your laptop.
Get yourself a docking station and connect your HDD to it. Then use it for automated backup or whatever the fuck you want.
Otherwise you're risking damaging the drive and losing data if you drop your laptop.
Not to mention the comfort of having 100% quiet computer with nothing spinning inside... maybe with exception of the fan, but you can easily mod your t420 to almost never spin it up.
Then there is also hardware encryption with no possibility of cold boot attack and no impact on cpu use.
>>
>>61609421
Cold boot and ABC agencies aren't my priority when encrypting. It's Jamal's and other such thieves. I've had my laptop stolen once with nothing but a password on it. Never again. As for CPU load, that's irrelevant to me. I'm not encrypting the boot drive. Only storage. Nothing important other than OS boot files and programs are on the SSD.

I see what you're saying but eh. Maybe I could... Maybe I'll add the 2x500GB drives to my file server as dedicated mobile backup space?... One for redundancy.

Wew lad, read about security erase and how it works in SSDs, especially the certified ones (ie. Intel).
protip: cryptopgrahic keys are being purged in a matter of seconds. Plus trimming unpartitioned disk takes about 40 seconds.
And you should recheck your facts, as magnet will definitely not destroy any data on a mechanical drive. Worst it can do is cause head crash, scratching platters a little, but it's still recoverable.

Does anyone has any experience in removing the supervisor bios password from thinkpads? The specific model in question is T400.

From information I've collected from random forums and youtube videos, the trick is getting access to the bios by shorting the SCL and SDA pins on the EEPROM, then resetting the password.

The T400 was bought around 6 months ago by a friend who never bothered to check if the bios was accessible at all untill now.

Somehow big corporations trust it and everyone's fine. If it wouldn't be fine such terrible cases of confidential data loss due to shit implementation of hardware FDE would be immediately publicized.
And yes, some SSD producers like Kingston or any chink brand are insecure in that matter. That's why I'm using certified Intel SSDs.
>No way to tell what it's actually doing or what flaws it might have.
I don't have to know that. I'm not protecting myself from the government, which (I presume) already has all my data. I'm protecting myself from nigger thieves who by any chance could be intelligent enough to extract encryption password from RAM and use it to steal my data. Which, by the way, is very simple.

To PARTIALLY CORRUPT data on mechnical drive you'd have to create high frequency ac magnetic field, which you won't, as you're too poor to own any relevant hardware to do so. Kill yourself and stop spreading FUD.

If you want to show me this meme image with hgst drives being the best ones and WD being the worst go ahead, by my guest. Keep in mind these are enterprise drives. This 2TB drive you're talking about is produced and sold as cheap consumer drive, which is mostly used anyway in external enclosures, as the drive is so prone to head crashes due to minimal space between heads and platters that nobody sane will mount it into a laptop.

How can I test this? I'm really curious if my magnet, which was taken off a speaker, would be strong enough to make it unreadable. Probably not, however the flaws of magnetic storage can be used as benefits.

Well, to be actually honest, I haven't been too keen on secure erase procedure. Just grab a hammer and go ape shit on HDD seems secure enough. Assuming we wouldn't need that HDD again.

Also, why do you think seashit is the only producer of 7mm 2TB drives on the market?
These drives were already sold in like 2015, and in the Q3 of 2017 still no other company makes such drives.
At some point the distance between platter and head is so tiny that any shock will cause it to crash and fuck up the platter. Even their fancy 3axis accelerometers won't save it when you carry around your laptop.

I had one in my 2570p and despiting hp 3d guard (lenovo APS equivalent) and internal accelerometer inside a drive PCB it still got crash'd after carrying my laptop inside a bag for like 5 minutes.
It's a miracle unpartitioning last 100GB somehow made this drive still usable. Now it serves as 1,9TB anime storage space :^)

Again, even a neodymium magnet won't corrupt your data. It will crash the head and fuck up the mechanism but it won't affect platters besides that.
Also new drives got magnetometers to automatically park heads if you get your drive close to a magnet, so even that shouldn't be a problem.
>how to test
Write random shit from /dev/random to disk via dd, turn off and unplug the drive. move your magnet around platter (try to avoid the place where heads are parked, as you might fuck them up). Replug drive, do dd to /dev/null. If drive starts to reallocate sectors due to difference between checksums and actual data written on it this means you somehow corrupted your files.
But you don't have to do that, as you'll only waste your time.
