How far behind is the gentoo wiki on portables? Looks like the most recommended phone there is Google Nexus.

The battery is decent but not outstanding if you use it as a phone, if you're a heavy poweruser that's on it for hours with WiFi, Bluetooth, background sync, gps, and all that shit turned on then it won't last you the whole day. Getting a custom ROM can help remove bloat but it won't make the battery last drastically longer.

It lags out of the box

https://www.sammobile.com/2017/06/27/samsung-ui-fluidity-problem-needs-fixing

>Of all the current generation high-end phones that I have used (and I’ve used most of them), the Galaxy S8 and S8+ have the worst performance when it comes to scrolling and smoothness of UI. Even though the LG G6 and the Google Pixel have the previous-generation Snapdragon 821 processor, they fare better in this regard. Much cheaper phones from Xiaomi have a smoother UI as well.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/04/samsung-galaxy-s8-review-shiny-new-hardware-meets-old-software-habits/5/#h2

>Actual in-app performance on the Galaxy S8 is not great. The Google Pixel raised the bar for what smooth Android performance looks like, and the Galaxy S8 just can't keep up. In the above picture you see Android's built-in GPU profiler mode. Each vertical line is the time it takes to draw a single frame, with the horizontal green bar representing 60FPS. Bars under the green line rendered in time, resulting in smooth 60FPS scrolling. Bars that overshoot the line took too long to render, resulting in a stutter in the UI animation.

>Even in the lowest resolution possible—1480×720—the Galaxy S8 still drops a ton of frames when scrolling complicated apps like the Play Store. The highly optimized Google Pixel—at its full 2560×1440 resolution—is easily getting frames in on time. And even if things do slow down, there's a sizable amount of render time still.

>No matter what resolution you pick on the Galaxy S8, scrolling (especially scrolling slowly) has this weird stutter to it and a slight ghosting effect. Not everyone is sensitive to small performance issue like this, but if you are, you'll find the S8 a little unpleasant to use. I wish Samsung focused more on optimizing the whole display and GPU stack to hit 60FPS and run more smoothly, rather than adopting the raw benchmark focus the company seems to have now.

Yes, I would recommend the unlocked version. You won't have any problems activating it with AT&T, just stick in your SIM card. Since it's unlocked you could sell it to someone on T-Mobile for example when you're ready to upgrade.

6GB of RAM would be more future proof, but not strictly necessary at least for the next couple years. Would increase your resale value though, so consider that.

Spec I'm looking for: 5.5" screen or higher with an sd card slot and removable battery would be nice if possible. I don't care if I have to wait a month to get it from some chink site or not it doesn't matter to me I just want to get a bang for my buck.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

I need to replace my iphone 5. I like my friends newish Sony Xperia (I don't know which exact model he has), but Sprint doesn't carry any Sony phones. So that narrows my choices down the to LG G6 and HTC U11.

They didn't have a U11 on display so I only go to try out the G6. Why does it only use android v6.0 instead of 7.0? This would be only my second smart phone so I don't really know a whole lot about them. I guess I want something that is fast, good battery, and good screen.

>doesn't have overpriced accessories
>3.5mm port
>mSD
>better camera on most devices
>better battery life on most phones

>can be used as a flash drive, without having to use LagTunes (so it can also be a Bootable Media)
>can share files with other devices over BT/WiFi
>deletable default/system apps
>superior rooting
>great variety of phones
>adjustable interface
>superior operating system overall
>better apps
>better multitasking
>file manager
>can download and install software outside a single app store
>can download certain files without 3rd party apps
>can download over 100MB at once
>can torrent, become a tiny server, overclock/underclock, and more
>AdAway, XPrivacy, AFWall+, Lucky Patcher, additional security and privacy apps, custom ROMs, system tweaks, easy recovery, more features and apps
>more useful apps for tech competent people
>even if you jailbreak an iPhone to get a few additional features, a rooted Android device still has 10x features, it even has more features when it's not rooted
>is an actual smartphone, instead of being an overpriced dumbphone
>pretty much a computer in your pocket

No. It has an astonishing design, the best screen and the best camera on the market, but that's pretty much it. Those are features that grab everyone's attention, but on the practical side, it's not that good, especially for the money: Samsung's UI is so heavy that it lags even on the most powerful SoC available, fingerprints scanner placement is beyond retarded, power management is just bad, being covered in glass means that it will eventually crack, unless you cram it inside a good protective cover, which is just stupid since the whole point of that phone is being borderless.

Have a LG G5, I try to do pretty much anything on it, but it keeps moving as if I was touching somewhere on the screen, it doesn't finishes the swiping motions, it usually stops responding after a few swipes, and worse of all, it seems like one of the sounds button is being repeatedly pressed for no reason, because it keeps opening up on the note app. Anyone knows what could cause this?

I do believe it's hardware, but I was wondering if it might just miraculously be something else that I could fix myself.

I use it in conjunction with Nova for launching apps via gestures and enabling mininmum or maximum brightness with a gesture. At the beginning i used it for pajeet level stuff like turning off wifi/bluetooth under certain conditions or IFTTT tasks, but I found that the more pajeet you go with it, the more there's a chance that those tasks will fail or just won't activate. Also judging from its subreddit tasker is dead.

How do you make a barely 1 year old phone die?
Drop it all the time and install shady apps and grant them unnecessary permissions?

Thinking about pulling the trigger on the Note 4 international.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y1KYR6R/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza Is this the actual international version?

I have AT&T. Coming from Zenfone Max 3.

Also are there any reliable ROMs for RN4 or is it pretty easy to navigate potential chinkshit that's on the phone?

Octacore is a meme.
Its like a 12 cylinder engine vs a v6. Diminishing returns.
Its not even a true octacore processor, its just stacking two quad cores and the computer will have to flip between the two rather than ACTUALLY using all 8 at once, because its deception.
Anyone dropping extra money for it is being fooled.
>>
>>61593464
that's why benchmarks exist, idc how many cores it has as long as it performs well
>>
>>61593464
idgaf about the octo-shit. I just want it for it's battery life, ram and other stats like price.
>>
>>61593412
No, it isn't. Won't get LTE on AT&T
>>
>>61579339
It does say in the listing that it will work with Att but it doesn't have 700 listed as a frequency. Does anybody know if this will this work with the att 4g lte network in the states?
>>
>>61593701
LTE band 12 is 700mhz
>>
>>61593767
Really, I just want something sub 180$ that has at least 3 gig of ram, has a mSD slot and has solid battery life. My 4100 has me spoiled.

any recommendations?
>>
>>61593631
Octo-shit will use more battery life than a quad core.
Al phones with an octocore would be better off with a quadcore.
>>
>>61593821
An octo-core will also run hotter.
What phones need to improve on is
1)Battery technology
2)Software
3)Physical phone design
And thats it.
Adding more cores will not fix the battery or the software issues that bloat and overheat phones

At this point phone companies have no idea what they are doing and think more core=moar betterer. This is objectively false.

Be careful with chinkshit. Had a Chuwi Hi8 for just over a year, used quite infrequently, never dropped, etc. One day it just stopped turning on, or even charging. Battery was fine, on/off switch was fine, couldn't find any cracked solder joints, complete mystery. Turns out others had the same issue, and as you'd imagine customer support is nonexistent with the chinks. Shame because it had really good specs for such a cheap tablet, but specs don't mean anything on a brick.

Yuropoor brother in law had one and was an ardent supporter of Windows phones, until he switched to android. Now he has a Redmi of some sort, said his lumia was garbage in retrospect.

to have a file manager (ie. MEGA) you have to install iTunes in EVERY machine you want to transfer files to.

Fucking christ /g/

I have the most budget shit ever. Im good at it and my needs are little

My new job requires an iphone with data. Fuck me, I researched the opposite end of the spectrum. Are their any smart options? Any good mvno's to put them on? And what iphone is the best value (they are all overpriced to me)

(please dont say buy some shit used phone with its battery life halfway to the toilet)
