Hi /g/,
Going to setup non-headless xen for all-in-one server, workstation and desktop use.
That makes XenServer not a good option.
Was happy to see there is xen for FreeBSD, but then, there is no PCI passthrough support, etc. (hnng).
All dom0 is going to be used for is to manage the virtual machines.
Hope to go with a light one, but not a shitty one that would need to be updated and restarted in any way or changed (so that vms would not need to have any downtime).

Which route would you go and why?

why xen instead of KVM?

why KVM instead of xen?

PCI-Passthrough.
Not sure if Zen can do that, but that makes kvm/qemu a good contender.

yeah i think if you're looking to leverage more peripherals you should looking into kvm/qemu as well
>>61575247
xen supports pci passthrough even if your hardware lacks an iommu
>>61574328
Use Proxmox

Xen used to be pure spaghetti code. That's why it wasn't merged into the kernel instead of KVM.
Don't know what the situation is now.

It can, and it often does it better than KVM with anything. Xen was rewritten from ground up to be solid, as it was originally a university project of PhD students who just wanted to make it work. But now, it's actually matured. A lot.

There is no PCI passthrough WHEN using _FreeBSD_ as dom0. NetBSD does, but significantly lags behind xen releases.
Link contains all OSes and/or distros known to wiki to work with xen.
>>61575336
It is not xen.

See this >>61575951 .
No one uses xen in similar fashion? It should work great.
Just need to decide which OS and/or distro will be dom0 and some recommendations would be great (no more kvm (it is not xen), thanks!).
