Supposedly it's pretty good. I have a proton email that I don't use for much, but they encrypt everything so security should be alright.
My only reservation is we have no idea if they will/can unencrypt things on their end for themselves, law enforcement, or others.

Well if you don't encrypt your mail yourself before it leaves your machine (your correspondents will need to do the same) then its unavoidable that the provider will have access to it.
