Ideally you go to surplus auction and get it first hand as they get rid of it. Ebay/Craigslist is the next tier but will be a little more expensive since the seller wants a cut


New hardware is stupid since anything you will do server side will just be cpu and old still powerful xeons are cheap on eBay.

I bought a $10 xeon that with a gtx 1050 can handle 50 fps in gta5 for example

Its actually quite useful. I was running a game server for awhile, but ended up nixing that.

Now its used mostly as a way to recruit employers. When Im looking for a job I update the web page on the server and its kinda like an online resume but a lot nicer.

Has pictures of electrical engineering projects I've worked on, programming code, music I've made, papers I've written, databases of information I've mined from social media, etc...

It really works great when you are trying to get a non-plebeian tier job and you have something nice to direct an employer to for browsing. Really sets you above the competition.

Would any decent couple of year old Xeon run pretty much any game server for a few friends?
I know it is probably highly dependant on the game but did you have any issues on whatever CPU you have?

depends entirely on what game.

If your hosting flash games those are for the most part entirely within the clients memory. Overhead really just depends on how much communication is happening with the back end.

For me, I was hosting a custom version of the 1980's text-based RPG Nethack. Very low overhead on my newer machine.

Also, you can get older models of Xeons inexpensive.

If your game is at all newer I would suggest buying a blade server.
