How do you guys feel about the Dell Precision series of laptops? What's the best option for someone running Solidworks, Siemens NX and IDEs? Not gaming on this at all, and usually I use an external display, so I don't care about onboard resolution.

Just get a T430.
That's what I used, and it works well with ProE/Creo, Matlab simulations, anything really.
Or get an XPS 15 or Precision (they use the same chassis) if you want to throw some more money down and get something newer and not be stuck with the shit screen on the Thinkpad.

BTW, if you can, try to pick one up from a Microcenter.
I found the newest XPS 15 (XPS 15 9560 w/ 4k screen and 512gb ssd) for 1600 USD. Ordering the same spec from Dell would cost 2200 USD.

Really solid machines, I'm using a M4800 myself.
