Right, so anyone buying one of these for workstation use is going to want something comparable specwise.
So you got slot 1 and slot 2 for dual Firepro S9170's, slot 3 is sadly covered up, slot 4 is for a dedicated network card, or other display adapter style GPU, slot 5 is for a raid card.
Thats what i would do anyway.

Ive got a board with 5 slots, 2 for firepro w9100's, one is covered, one is for a 750ti and the last one is for a fiber card.

Looking to upgrade soon, hope my glorified 290x's dont bottleneck the new threadripper chips :l

Threadripper has 64 lanes for ALL threadripper processors

Intel X299 highest core models have like only 40 KEK and the Kaby Lake-X versions (4 core versions) only get 24 lanes.

Yes, its there to take stress off the motherboard power connector, as otherwise some setups can draw enough power to burn the motherboard 12v connectors.

Some boards use molex, other use a sata power connector, and if they have the room they can be found at the bottom of the board. My own Biostar TPower X79 has a molex connector for the slots, and my DX58SO has both a molex and a Sata power connector on it.
