Whats the optimal computer os/setting/etc. for an old computer that's used for mainly browsing, watch stuff, and looking at images?

Windows 7 pro with all unnecessary user interface dress up (animation, glass, etc) disabled

Some fucknut will tell you to run Linux. If you want a chore instead of a tool, do that

Linux is the obvious choice here
Just use Mint of some other Ubuntu based distro

GNU/Linux

Debian or arch with no DE.
I recommend i3 for tiling or open box for floating. Both have a learning curve, but are great once you get used to them.

You have 2 sane options:

1: Whatever windows was out when the computer was sold, ideally XP or higher.

If you use streaming video services tat aren't linux friendly, suc as hulu or HBO go, this option will be better. The downside is that having an old, unpatched OS on your network may be somewhat risky.

2: Xubuntu or Ubuntu MATE

With this you will have a modern, secure OS that will run well.

The downside is that some streaming services are frustrating on linux. I have had good luck with Netflix, Youtube, Vimeo, and Amazon Video, but HBO gave me lots of trouble.

pick your poison

I'd like to add hat there are lots of other good distro choices, I just picked 2 that I think are easy to learn to use.
