My 8540w overheats and shuts off within 10 minutes. I really need to open it up and clean out the vents and shit. Also, those little mouse button flaps near the button edge fell off and the other mouse buttons near the bottom of the keyboard are all gunky and get stuck easily.

My DELL XPS 13 9365 is pretty good, but it's a 2in1, so might not fit your definition of a laptop. The Lenovo P5x/7x is also very nice, just as well as the DELL Precision 7720.

On the other hand, avoid HP Zbooks and Elitebooks at all cost, they have a super shitty BIOS and are really brand sensitive when it comes to SSDs.

it'll be covered in AIDS cum and the battery will have lost most of its charge.
I think the macbook air with a student discount is the best compromise. Best keyboard they offer, matte screen and it can natively run whatever distro you want.
