Buying a T420 today. I can't decide between one with a i5 2.4ghz or one with a i7 2.7ghz.

Last Thinkpad I had was the i7 and it practically caught on fire and bricked itself one day, so I'm hesitant to get the same specs again and have the same thing happen. Can the T420 really support the i7?

It was a gift for university back in the day, I didn't have a say in the matter. Everything was aces for years anyways, until the gpu died and I had to swap out the mobo because you can't take the damn gpu off.

If this one dies and I replace it will be the fourth goddamn mobo this goddamn ship of theseus has gone through.
>>
>>61547545
You could've replaced the mobo with the non-dgpu one.

I have an in with the tech desk at the uni, they give me essentially free replacement parts but they're all from the same config they sold back in the day. So I just burn through shitty dgpus but as a side effect I never get a better machine. It's a dangerous place to be.

>>
>>61547617
T61 are ok if not dated should you have the 15" version with flexview screen, otherwise its resolution is rather lacking for watching anything. Also avoid models with the nvidia gpu because they have soldering defects that cause the device to fail once it shits itself.

Unless your import tax is overpriced third world tier you should just get a T420/430 off ebay.

I have a T430 with i7 and Nvidia GPU. It has plenty of processing power for me so I wouldn't really need a new one, but I googled and found out that there's really no IPS screens available for that model and the default screen is pretty bad (1600x900 though). From the newer generations, which one is the least crappy compared to T430? I like the keyboard and sturdiness and everything. A longer battery life would be a great bonus. Are the newer models so bad that it's better to wait for the retro Thinkpad first?

G40 fag here, any of you lot mind being my tech support for my T42?

I borked the install on accident trying to remove a second half baked installation of windows XP. So i went to just install XP sp3 again.

So standard fresh XP feel, nothing extra on there, literally just the bare essentials, not even MSpaint on the bitch. I move my wifi adapter drivers over and they install just fine.
Except that when i look into the network connections, the hardware isnt there. Doesnt show in the taskbar, doesnt show in the control panel. Device manager says its working properly.
What do?

If i can get wifi i can fix everything else.

Any suggestions?
Im going to try installing lubuntu 12.04 (because of PAE reasons, ill upgrade) and see if that can at least let me shitpost on it. But i want XP for autocad and a few other windows only programs i use

The T430 screen is apparently one of the worst Thinkpad have made. The 1366 x 768 screen will be difficult to replace with something better but for an i7 and 8GB ram it could be worse.. though certainly better

Not sure on X230T, but I have an X230, and changing the HDD to an SSD took literally three minutes. There's a port on the side you pop open and slide your SSD into after removing one screw. So easy.

>battery
no idea how it was before I had it and on windows
I use gnu linux and it holds for a few hours while playing runescape.

>performence
althought the cpu runs hot sometimes the performence is great. and with the ssd its been a super snappy experience.

>what should I look for
screen burn in is what I have and hate
my screen also died like a week or 2 ago it works on startup but dies when the cpu heats up
the cpu is probably the cause of the defect

overal thought
only buy these if you need the touchscreen (i7 only works with stylus not fingers) or get a great ass deal
performance is good
batterylife has been okay for me

ssd prices are apart from thinkpads they are expensive nothing can change that sadly

The x230t comes with 320gb HDD, if I want to add an SSD do I need to swap them out, or can I just add another one on top of it?

I just want it for the Windows so itll come up faster, I'll use the HDD for storage.

Guy who bought a used x230t here.
The guy I bought it from is French, so the laptop is in French, and for some reason even after changing the language and what not I still have some stuff that are in french.

For example when I boot up the PC and it shows me the Windows 10 "welcome" its in france, same for restart.

Also when I installed the Lenovo Update tool and Realtek its also in french.

How do I go about changing this stuff?

Also anything else I should re-install? it looks like he re-installed windows with some basics and just left it at that, no drivers and no nothing.

How difficult is it to swap LCD screens in a thinkpad T420? I have my old 420 with i7-2620m, 1600x900 panel, and 2 hard drives. This T420 is beat to shit and falling apart.

I recently bought a mint T420 for pennies. Working 9 cell, perfect condition and new keyboard. However it's only the i5 variant, and has a garbage tier 1366x768 panel.
>>

to go from 1366x768 to 1600x900 you have to swap out the cable as well
>>

oh no :(. I didn't think it'd be that involved. Is there a guide you can link me to? Or is it simple? Swapping RAM, CPU's, hard drives, keyboards. That's all easy. I get nervous about LCD's and screens overall because I'm afraid of breaking them.

Decided that this wasnt worth my time in the slightest.
XP installed broken, three times with w different ISO's
Windows 7 wouldn't even get past "press any key to boot from USB"
Lubuntu 16.04 wouldn't work with forcepae
12.04 woulsnt work at all
The system image from the G40 wouldn't work at all
Couldn't even get msdos to boot
Tried 3 different USB sticks, 4 different bootable usb programs, different formats, even a different HDD in the thing

10 hours of my time wasted
Not worth the 20$ I paid for the thing
RIP T42, my first thinkpad, gave me nothing but problems the entire time I owned it

I fucking hate dealing with old tech problems, I kept forcing myself into it as a hobby, "its fun to fix old broken shit" I said, "I can find enjoyment in getting it to work" but its just too much random shit to deal with. No patience for it

"industrial standard" sorts of laptops
dell makes some ruggedized models similar to oldschool Toughbooks that are designed to run in high humidity, high or low temperatures and high altitudes

Panasonic toughbooks of course are always top of the list for people with extreme environmental needs. The Toughbook 53 is rated for all sorts of shit, the 31 is rated for all that shit + its basically indestrucible unless you shot it with a .50 BMG. But its also THICC
Id kill for a 31 with that 27 hours of battery life, but im a broke boi
>>
>>61565303
>>61565104
I would also like to add that even the lowest end 53 has the same ceritifcations except for shock resistance and used ones are only like 500 bucks. But a decent mid tier one new is like 1200$

As far as thinkpads go, P50 and P70 models are rated for high humidity but theyre not rugged laptops by any means, Lenovo doesnt really have laptops for industrial use. T series stuff is well built but nowhere near on the tier of actual ruggedized laptops.

So I decided to eat lunch at a nice restaurant near my office today, I'm bogged down writing this report so I decide to take my company laptop with me (T420 in mint condition).

I'm working away and enjoy my lunch when out of the corner of my eye, I see a figure walking towards my table. It's a guy wearing a fedora and a FSF t-shirt. He tries to strike up conversation about my T420, complimenting its excellent condition and 7 row keyboard.

I was so taken aback by this, I had an utterly shocked look on my face. So this is /g/ in real life. I wanted to remain incognito, so I said "It's my work computer. It's OLD".

He scrunched up his face with a look of utter disgust. I saw him walk away muttering something about "normies ruined ThinkPad, they don't know the joys of having a 7 row keyboard and a magnesium alloy rollcage..."

Decided to make a quick exit, on the way out I noticed him using a X60 with a libreboot sticker on it, running some sort of riced tiling WM with an anime wallpaper. He was arguing across the table with a Mac user. Overheard something along the lines of "Macs are locked down pieces of trash...Louis Rossman hates them"

Which one do I buy? Is the extra screen size on the t420 worth it? I want to use this laptop primarily for shitposting, browsing, studying and reading manga/watching anime.

Starting business masters soon. Don't think my X61 will cut it for classes anymore. What are 16:10 options for around $700?

Could probably bump it up to near $1k if something's worth it. My wife's P50 seems alright, but I don't like the keyboard and 16:9.

t410 was the last 16:10 thinkpad.

Hmm. That sucks. Guess greater resolution could give me more screen real estate to fuck with if I must use 16:9.

on a scale from 1 to 10 how easy was it to do?
I really want to do it too but seems so hard

Bought my refurbished X200 two years ago. All is still fine, the only problem has been loose screws for the display, but I've fastened them. Oh, and the thinklight doesn't work, but whatever.

80€, plus 100 for an SSD. The shop even added a nice laptop bag, charger and mouse for free.
My best buy ever. Love the trackpoint the most.

I don't keep cute anime girls on this work laptop, so just imagine her from the filename:

>>
>>61570150
About as easy or difficult as the image would imply. Some familiarity with how to program an arduino would help, a steady hand for connecting wires to the proper pins on the laptop PCB (I'm guessing it's the UEFI ROM chip the pins are attaching to), and the ability to follow instructions, as I assume there's a guide out there informing you of the exact steps needed.
>>
>>61569506
okay then its probably pretty good to you anon
honestly if you want my personal opinion
its nice
nice depth nice actuation force nice keycap size
layout is unconventional sometimes like the odd print screen button but its a nice keyboard to use especially if youre coming from shitty laptops

that said I am planning on installing a classic keyboard on my T430

Honestly, once you figure it out, if you're accustomed to Linux enough to know how to navigate and plug in commands through Bash, it's like 2/10 in difficulty. However, if you don't have someone to hold your hand, and you're starting from the bottom, it's easily 9/10. The Libreboot IRC is pure cancer, and most of the people there will not offer you help that you're looking for, and you'll get frustrated beyond belief.

However, if you find someone sane who has accomplished what you want to do already, it's super simple and I got it done in a snap. Also, once you flash once, you can flash again any time you want from the laptop itself. It'a a one-time process initially.

I'm willing to help if anyone's interested, you can find me on my IRC ( https://lewd.pics/irc ) when I'm off work (not right now). You can easily spend less than $60 to get it done yourself with pic related.

Manhattan Portage plain packs are good.
Timbuk2 used to make great stuff, but now its MOSTLY shitty, cheaped out, small garbage for 2-3X as much. their old made in SF messenger bags are great. thier really expensive new made in SF stuff is decent, but not really worth it. chrome is hipster gear.

get them off of eBay. full price retail is for suckers

Budget: ~200 euros or ~$230

Not certain how to get spi working on a Raspi, but if you can do that and connect pins to the right ports, it's a super simple process. I found a Beaglebone Black on ebay for $30 and used that, as it has a built-in 3.3v power supply. Also uncertain of what kind of power output the raspi has onboard. But yeah, any time! It's exciting once you can actually get your flash chip detected!

>>61570777
As long as you have the hardware and software set up properly it really is as simple as plugging in commands.

what are the advantages to libreboot? pls no bully, i'm new to this.
>>
>>61571350
Imagine having a computer with no backdoors that runs without any proprietary software. It's 100% free and liberated and respects your fundamental right to privacy as a computer user. That's what libreboot can offer.
>>
>>61571350
if you don't know then don't worry about it
>>
>>61571350
No intel ME botnet. No binary blobs, you have full control over your hardware in that you can modify Libreboot's source to do whatever you want, and the source has no ME backdoors included.

Probably the most secure hardware + software you can run as a consumer, assuming you also use a Libre OS alongside libreboot. The only downsides I see are that you have to use older hardware, and the installation process is daunting to someone without experience.

>>
>>61572738
Flashing the wrong image is what you're risking. Just make a backup of your original before you flash anew.

Also, don't supply too much power to the chip or you'll blow it up. If you know your power supply is whatever the chip requires exactly, you're fine.

>speccy sucks
sounds like your opinion. FYI it's discarded immediately.
>does not give accurate hardware specs or temperatures often
1st argument is a lie. Speccy just copies information from device manager, which is the only way in windows to check hardware configuration.
2nd argument is again a lie. It's the AyyMD who doesn't follow standards, which results in shitty temperature readings. And it's fixed from a long time anyway.

you literally acknowledged that it's true and put the blame on Windows device manager + AMD's temperature sensors
>>
Just bought by first thinkpad T430. Fantastic, other than the battery life.
>>
>>61573969
Depending on screen size, it's acceptable. I have 1920x1080 on my 14" and I run 150% scaling on GUI.
In 3D games, I run regular 1280x720 just to decrease the workload.

So, while it's nice to have 1080p for movies and shit, it's less than 10% of what I'm doing with my laptop while still being just "nice" - not outstanding.
Overpaying for higher resolutions on a fucking laptop is plain retarded and results in overall worse performance for no good reason.

>>
>>61573988
What I said is that there is no way speccy can lie about hardware, as it's taking all info straight from the only source of such information in the system.
And the only way to get CPU temperature is to read it from CPU. If CPU lies about temperature then it's the CPU to blame, not software. You dumbfuck.

That's even worse. If these are the only ones, I would go with T61, however it uses DDR2 ram so it will be very expensive to upgrade to 8gb ram if you so desire (one 4gb stick cost around 60$ in aliexpress).
Otherwise, T61 is pretty gud.
