Retro thread - Goodbye to MS Paint edition.

High-colour remake when?
The creators update gave me 3d paint.
I didn't even ask for it.
My old Pentium II laptop has XP installed on it atm. It's had a lot of OSes but I'm going back to 98 for DOS game support. Web browsing is pointless because few browsers work without SSE2. K-Meleon works ok, but because of the Gecko rendering engine the user agent comes up as old Mozilla and most websites throw a fit. The WiFi card installs on 98 with drivers, but has no WPA2 support. WPA-PSK version 1 doesn't work with my router. XP's built in wireless support bypasses this problem.
>>61540550
>Web browsing is pointless because few browsers work without SSE2.
Aren't there pretty up to date Firefox or Opera versions that still render fine?
speaking of retro, Irfanview supports photoshop plugins. I used to run deep paint as a plugin in irfanview. and photoshop 6.
Back when googling "index of/ photoshop filetype:iso inurl:edu would find you page after page of legit photoshop isos with activation keys sitting on university file servers.
Pretty sure the statute of limitations has run out on that, now.
I just googled a download link for deep paint 2 tho.

I squeezed in a second SCSI hard drive into the external SCSI box I got a while ago.
It isn't meant to support two hard drives, but being they also had a revision of the same box for optical drives, they fit and it has enough power to run them without problems. Just needed to squeeze on another SCSI connector onto the ribbon.
Pic..webm related, copying a file between the two external drives. I love how the indicator came out, both drives still have an activity LED, power led is just a dimmer one behind the activity light.
I want retro things so bad. Same that it's either cheap and not working or people think something are with thousands since they're older.

so yesterday I stumbled upon an article that named this lovely woman as the author of the windows 3.0 icons (and up to 2000, since they've been left nearly unchanged). she was the icon designer at apple in the 80s.
while most people don't care much, for me this explains the aesthetics of windows 3.1 icons (even in 16 colors!) and the sudden horror of XP icons (and Vista, and 8). for high color, the 95 Plus! icons were pretty good.
I wonder what windows would have been like if she hadn't been around. prob like windows 2.0 lol

Those with BNC connectors also have ROM sockets, originally to load BIOS netboot capabilities, but they can load any BIOS extension. Great for things like IDE or HD floppy BIOS extensions on older machines.

Sort of but not really. They're magnetic but use a laser to guide the heads more precisely.
>>61545125

>>61551025
They don't have a 12V aux for the CPU and they're pretty high TDP for the time, which is all drawn from the 5V rail. So if your 5V rail is shit you're going to have a bad time.
>>61551417
I know, always thought about it as a dirty hack though like something you'd find on an Amiga, not that I don't like dirty hacks, I love them.
Those things for x86 machines usually are just a PCB with a reversed socket and another socket for the new CPU, if he had the board socket populated he could just leave out the middleman. Kind of cleaner if you ask me.
Still I love those that socket over the chips, specially on board without any option to upgrade at all.

Hey /retro/
What are some old games I can play on my Windows 98 PC?
>>61553727
Specs? If it has 3D acceleration or a Voodoo card it will broadly wider the spectrum of games that would go great with it.
I'd say, anything from Doom/Wolf3D/ROTT to Duke3D and Quake1/2, with all kinds of (good) shit like Red Alert and Carmageddon in between.
What are your interests?
Backing up the 10MB MFM drive that came with my Turbo-XT over ethernet with FTP.
Time to use the IDE adapter (seen on the PSU) and put the MFM drive to rest.
Sorry for the mess.
>>61553758
It's a bog standard off the shelf pre-build with 128MB of RAM. Low end graphics, not sure exactly what.
My interests are mostly sci-fi stuff. I've currently got Star Trek Armada and Age of Empires working well.
>>61553782
>I've currently got Star Trek Armada and Age of Empires working well.
Good choices.
System Shock is pretty sci-fi and fun.
If there's no 3D acceleration, I'd look more into DOS titles than native Win9x games, even though many will be fine, like Quake 2 with software render.
>>61553727
>>61553782
That's what's currently on my Win98 machine, it's pretty lackluster and not a definitive list, but it might give you a few ideas.
But I also have a GeForce and Voodoo card in mine.
Is it possible to play online on retro rig today?
Do I need some additional software to play on modern UT/TFC/HLDM servers?
>>61553860
Modern games that where popular online already have patches or source ports for newer systems to continue doing that.
Else TCP/IP games still play like the would back then, someone just has to host the server.

How much RAM is it supposed to have?
The Dallas RTC is the one you replaced? Sure it's 100% supported? Maybe it has a larger CMOS or something that it doesn't like.
IIRC was there a way to wipe the CMOS by shorting out some pin on the RTC? Maybe it's storing something it can't wipe with software.
I have no fucking clue to be honest, I usually just replace the battery on the RTC, it isn't much work at all, the one right now is going to die one day anyways and might need to be replaced again, try finding a new one then, better just have the original and and option for a battery or supercap.
>>61557113
Unreal/UT99 look okay with software renderer. Nothing's wrong with 320x240. (I have to 50% scale to run Overwatch on my modern 1366x768 laptop). Quake 1/2 are fine in software mode. Really only Quake 3 requires a 3D card, but UT2004's software render is garbage and will probably need a fairly good early 2000s D3D card. (ran on low with my P4 integrated graphics)
>>61557805

What is your favorite development environment for old Windows (3.x, 9x or NT)?
>>61559545
Like this?
Posting some guts.
Also, the case is te royal pain in the arse to work with.
>>61559939
it's not a G3 either though, more of a power mac 8100/8500 or quadra 800/840 with extra buttons on the top
Would you guys like a video about the desktop beige G3 I have in storage?
(You can see it in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fa-DlLAcrjg btw)
Sorry if this is spam.

I can't be the only nigger who actually used solder.

More like Commodore + run/stop because fastload cart is love.
>>61560291
Re-ink your ribbon, you barbarian.
>>61560791
It was just a bit dry. Sprayed some WD-40 on it and it works wonderfully now.
>>61557043
You could get Doom 3 or NFS:MW working if you have KernelEx. I've also seen someone running the The Sims 3 installer under KernelEx (not sure if the game worked or not, the uploader of the video didn't say anything about it).

Made this in gimp recently.
>>61560089
I colored it in paint back on Win95 or was it 3.11...?
>>61560957
Nice. That's a pretty convincing simulation of watercolor.
>>61553015
I wish I could just take one of them home..
>ms paint is going away
>>61561647
I see this mentioned everywhere. What are they going to replace it with? Paint is one of the first programs I liked on Windows.
>>61561792
Some gimmicky "Paint 3D" thing
>>61561647
>>61561792
Does ReactOS have an accurate FLOSS Paint clone?
>>61561792
No, Paint isn't going anywhere. In the update notes for the new Win10 update Paint was marked as "deprecated" and all the tech bloggers put up a billion clickbait articles about it. In reality they're just moving it to the Windows Store like they did with most classic Windows programs already, like calculator.
>>61562167
Ah I see what's going on. They are preparing to release a free version of Windows where you have to buy all the features from the Windows store.
>>61562167
>move basic functions such as the calculator to the store
>installer images keep getting bigger
Really bloats my code
>>61544284
looks like big head from silicon valley desu
>>61562224
Windows 10's calc.exe is 5x smaller than 7's

>PC gaming was extremely niche, yet there were tons of titles made on PCs that were extremely popular and were inevitably ported to consoles (often in compromised form)
>now
>PC gaming is much more mainstream, yet most PC games are console ports, sometimes PC doesn't even get games
Can someone explain this to me? Why did PC gaming seem so much more exclusive and unique when it was a niche platform, but as it became mainstream it became just a glorified console?
>>61562602
I didn't really grow up in that era, but, AFAIK, shit was expensive back in the day (even low end hardware was expensive as well).
>>61562602
I don't see it that way all. Nowadays it's getting rarer to even own a desktop.
>>61562698
As a portion of total PC owners, yes, but I'd bet there's a larger absolute number of gaming-capable desktop owners today than in 1999, in addition to the gaming laptop meme.
>>61562602
>most PC games are console ports
No, most are mobile cross-plats.
>>61540079
the PS/2 may be fucked beyond repair but at least my shitbox habit enabler had something cute and special for me

Yeah, Susan Kare.
And the icons in xp weren't really terrible, just too much too suddenly. They were done by the iconfactory and were ok, just not great. Obviously chosen by committee after several submissions.
Icon art took a hit in general as soon as resutlion went up. 32x32 is about the the best constraint there was, and amazingly great icons happened in that format. We're only just now rebounding (macOS has finally had nice folders for only a few versions, and many of its other icons are trash...windows folders are still garbage and hopefully get better).
>>61563728
Looking good. I need to check my old laptops if they're still in working condition.
>>61563998
I love this one
>>61563780
I think the biggest problem with icons these days is inconsistency. The new Windows 10 icons are trash though, some of them don't even have colour, making it hard to find what you're looking for. Humans have colour vision for a reason.
Looky what I found. This picture is from 2015, when I used to carry around a Satellite 4000CDS as my main laptop. I even took it on vacation.

in the closet, also have 3 octane, 1 indy.

A DRM dongle? That's really all I can think of.
Just picked these up today from my old grandparents house. Going to see if it still works/get it to work.
>>61565763
looks like a cartridge for some kind of Fujitsu or other system, probably the operating system ROMs or something of the like to allow for easy swapping for an upgrade or OS change or whatever else, I've seen some systems with this kind of feature
>>61566464
that'll clean up real nice
I found this old industrial control panel keyboard and trackball recently. It has magnetic reed key switches.
I'm gonna look into what it would take to make it a standalone keyboard.
>>61540898
I've bought 3 model M's off of fleabay, only one hasn't had a problem.

Cuecat. Obscure hardware if you ask me, I don't think they were ever sold where I live.
>>61563522
I don't like it that way
>>61566541
The keyboard (pretty sure it's mechanical)
>>61564203
have you looked into using a zram-based swap to help extend your ram?
i would imagine lz4 compression would be considerably faster than disk swapping on that machine
>pop in a new backup battery and fresh AAs, hook it up to the wall
>doesn't turn on (says it was dead in the listing but worth a try)
>fuck I guess I'll have to open it up
>spend 2 agonizing hours trying to figure out if there are hidden screws at the front, turns out the tabs are just retarded
>everything looks fine
>spend another hour trying to get the same fucking front tabs to snap back in place
>press the power button for the fuck of it
>it turns on
>????
>realize it just has one of those retarded latches in the ROM access door that isn't being depressed fully
>coat it with tape and screw it shut again
>tfw finally have a CE palmtop

what the fuck is this my dream os?
>>61541397
caveat
needs haiku features like tree style task manager and windowtabs
then it'll be my dream ui
>have this perfectly working ibm 390x laptop
>tfw the hinges are broken
I should probably just use an external monitor with this one, or does anyone else have better ideas?
>>61568732
behead it completely and use it as a compact bridge box with character
if only there was a good way to cover up the gaping holes where the hinges were
>>61551839
3dfx dumped the datasheets for their shit right before they were eaten up. Which is cool a.f.
if I ever crawl far enough out of the pit of ignorance to write kernel shit I want to make a driver for one.
>>61568732
Hinges show up on eBay often.
>>61568799
>>61568841
I think going headless for now is good. The plastic around the hinges is very damaged so I'm not sure if replacements would do any good. If I removed the display I could perhaps cover the holes with some black tape. Also, it has these cute feet I never noticed, like on keyboards.

Comfy vids, lainon.
I also got an IBM shitbox too actually, but for 3 euros more than you (20nzd), it has a Core 2 Duo though.

How do you set window size with keyboard?
