Whats your favorite linux distro and a few reasons as to why you prefer it.. looking to try something besides ubuntu.
>>
Ive recently gotten into ZorinOS. Comes prepackaged with Wine and PlayOnLinux. Also has some nice GUI options.
>>
have you tried ubuntu gnome
>>
i just installed opensuse and i think i'm going to stick with it a long time.
>yast
>extensive selection of software with non-official repos
>developed and used by germans
>yast is fucking amazing
the most comfy distro i've used so far.
>>
Why not use ubuntu? I am using arch because it is easy to setup and I enjoy the bleeding edge. If not, just stick with ubuntu, don't waste hours meming yourself like I did installing literally every distro.

You will know what distro to switch to once you have a actual need.
>>
>>61534179
Just looking for a better distro that does better with hardware like using like ram and less load on the processor and possibly better security features. what about fedora and debian? Ive heard nothing but good things with those two
>>
Also looking for a distro thats programming friendly as i want to start learning it myself before studying it in college so i know what im walking into.. ive always been good with hardware and now looking to get into the software and programming side of things.

That boils down to preference. Fedora and Debian work better as Workstation OS's and are more barebones. You gotta work your way around to the other forks to find something you may really like.
>>
>>61534251
>>61534179
Like anon said yo, try ubuntu. It's a good starting point to start learning, and as you get more comfortable with it then you can start looking for a distro that fits your use case.
>>
>>61534084
i'd suggest you trying out the archlinux family (ie. arch, manjaro, antergos...)

you'll find its documentation and AUR a great advantage

Solus is nice

Whats programming on ubuntu and the arch family distros like? Is arch a good distro to start programming and learning coding on
>>
>>61534340
I know ubuntu comes prepackaged with Python.

Pythons a good starting point for programming, and has great documentation and a massive community behind it.

You can also learn Bash for linux, which is a scripting language that can be ran right out of terminal, tho bash is more for automated processing.
>>
>>61534340
all distros are the same in terms of programming on them, the main difference between *buntu and archlinux family are that in the first ones you would have to use ppa and on the other one you have the Arch Wiki and in the AUR you have literally TONS of software available (every piece of software for every known distro may have been ported to AUR and is available to each arch-family user)
>>
>>61534278
some points this anon forgot to mention:
> non-bloated distro, you install what you want
> rolling release
>>
>>61534410
Rolling release is overrated

Learn somethin new everyday. Might have to give arch a spin.
>>

>>61534418
What is ppa and what is rolling release? Also how good are the updates on arch is it updated weekly? Monthly? Youve definately sparked my interest
>>
>>61534418
as a programmer, I want to work with the last version of my software, providing me the last features and bugfixes, not a 2 year old program
>>
>>61534443
Could someone give me an awnser on this tech speak:)
>>
>>61534432
also you may have software thats not in any distro but in source code form (for example a new software only available in github) ready to install from AUR
>>
>>61534455
Basicly with apt (which is Ubuntu's package manager) their repos are all maintained by outside sources, so in order to use apt to install and then keep up to date other software made by the community you have to link the ppa (Personal Package Archive) to your apt.
>>
>>61534443
distros never have all software in their official repositories, because it would be a lot of work to maintain all this software up to date, instead they rely on 3rd party repos to provide software

a ppa is a 3rd party repository that you find over the internet from a unknown author
while in AUR you have everything centraliced, you wont be losing time looking for software

rolling release means that whenever new software is released, the distro updates it, not weekly nor monthly, instantly

Try Fedora and opensuse for maximum stability

>>61534340
You'll spend more time configuring arch than actually programming on it, still kinda fun as a meme though. Programming on Ubuntu is like any other OS really.

>>

I've installed Arch Linux in more than 7 computers and the time you spend configuring the system is no more than 5 minutes.

> Edit vimrc config - 1 line

All the rest, as is.

Good thing Fedora uses dnf
>gnome
You don't have to use it, there's other DEs available, but if you use GNOME, you will get the most up to date GNOME desktop here.
>>
>>61535007
> On can use last version of GNOME on Arch Linux while getting the benefit of AUR
Explain why do I have to use Fedora instead
>>
>>61535020
Fedora prepares every GNOME release to also be stable, and is the first distro to release the newest stable version. That's why they call it leading edge, Fedora is the first one to ship with new stuff. I believe it was the first distro that used Wayland and systemd by default.
>>
>>61535020
Fedora is the workstation of choice if you want to build for enterprise systems - redhat, centos - locally and not remotely.
>>
>>61535061
Dude I can get this "stable" version of GNOME in 2 days on my Arch Linux tho.
Moreover, I can get all software on the newest stable version on official repos and AUR.
Sorry m8, I don't find your point of using Fedora instead.
>>
Gentoo
>glorious package manager
>USE flags
>being able to easily host your own binary repo thanks to an official guide
>can be installed literally everywhere, including a prefix environment, which is basically a chroot without the chroot, thus not requiring root access, great for a personal package manager
>the wiki, even better than the Arch wiki I'd say
>versatility
>muh bleeding edge
>occasional bragging rights (wow anon you actually managed to install this thing? you must be really good at Linux)
>>
>>61534902
it actually is, you can do whatever you want with GUI and CLI as well
>>
>>61535142

Fedora

26 has demonstrated that this rock solid build is the best in the buisiness. Little bloat compared to Ubuntu or OpenSUSE. DNF is actually a decent package manager. I don't think I'm going to switch at this point.

>>
>>61535159
This is one of the few drawbacks, but other than the initial compilation of @world during the installation and bigger meta packages (mainly Xorg or a DE) that you most likely only need to compile once in their entirety, it's not too bad.
