>buddy of mine has got me interested in Networking
whats the less stressful/more moneymaking career?
>>
I'm going to uni for a comps sci degree and I'm considering a focus in networking so I'm also curious. If that works out probably move to one of those growing cities like Nashville or Salt Lake.

Personally I started as a Software Engineering Major and got halfway through the program and found that it wasn't what I wanted.

Programming was always time consuming but if I was doin something I enjoyed it didn't bother me to much. It's the projects that I wasn't interested in that gave me issues. I got the project management class (one where we work on one project all semester) and hated it.

I left Software Engineering and went to MIS and Cyber Defense, and I'm finding it MUCH more rewarding.

it honestly boils down to preference.

I think Networking is less stressful, but Programming will net you more money in the end. A healthy balance tho might get you more, since with networking and deployment being able to make startup scripts and automate updates makes life a hell of a lot easier (plus having it all on a resume doesn't look to shabby as well).

Do comp sci
Make unicorn startup
Sell it
Go home and pound beers like good Ol boys
>>

Networking is usually nowhere close to less stressful and often times can net you more.

Every career choice in the field is entirely situational. Your success and even your day-to-day work will be hugely affected by where you're working geographically, what size company you're working for, etc.

Networking will be fairly stress-free with a modest salary when you're working for a small company or group. You can also tear your hair out at a large corporation doing insane rollouts and make six digits. The same goes for programming.

>whats the less stressful career

whatever you do, don't get into security. defending 24/7 365 against an invisible enemy that's using attacks never before seen will cut your life short by 10-15 years.
>>
>>61533586
Networking is moving towards being heavily automated at the configuration and software level, which is where all the money is. I'd stick with coding for now.
>>
>>61533586
If you want to make money programming try and study economics/finance at the same time. Get an internship in a bank on one of the front office tech or electronic trading desks. People who have good mathematical skills and financial knowledge and can write code are the future of this industy.

>implying working in security is like a hacker film
>>
>>61534821
I'm told the exact same thing about coding, plus coding being done by all the pajeets

What the fuck is there as an IT career choice that doesn't fuck me over in 5 years?
>>
>>61534895
You could learn COBOL and spend your life maintaining older systems?

If you're after money, do the thing you enjoy. If you're fascinated with the subject matter and always thirsty for more, you will become a guru and that is what rakes in the money. This is not possible if you're in the field just for the money.

But:
Networking is hard to get into, because nobody lets an unexperienced intern fiddle with the very heart of their network. Most networking guys have been sysadmins before or spent years in the noc proving themselves.
Also networking is high stress, everyone blames the network if the mouse pointer disappears or Facebook is loading slowly. And you have the power to take the entire network down with a single command, so you always need to be alert. I am part of the network team for a city carrier, if we make an error half the city goes down and hospitals have to delay surgeries for example.

>>61534821
Networkers won't get replaced by coders, but by other networking guys who picked up python along the way. To automate networking, you still have to understand networking. The stuff that is automated is grunt work, which will just make the junior positions rarer, but you can't automate architecture decisions.
Also you don't need be a full-blown programmer, you just need to learn new tools like Ansible or version control or learn new APIs to orchestrate your network and glue a few things together with scripting. We'll spend less time at the CLI, that's for sure.
I am responsible for the automation of our network, and my first project is the automation of CPE provisioning. Afterwards, I've got setting up Ansible planned, but still, there's some things we won't automate - major changes on the backbone, for example, as that would also enable the scaling of disasters.
The field is changing, not disappearing.

It's a LOT of paper work, from what I've seen. Mostly analyzing and designing firewall rule-sets.
>>
How much do networkers make relative to rest of the possible CE/EE/CS based professions?
>>
>>61537241
I've got a buddy who works at one of the USAs largest corps as a security specialist. He does mainly firewall rules and pen testing on the test net among other things.
Tldr can confirm on that

network engineer here.

in central europe money in net is very good. also i love that job since you work with material world.

network equipment is neat

software "engineering"

>more moneymaking career?
if you're autistic and just want blow your salary on hookers, then networking is definitely more stable than SE.

even half-assed admin in my school was earning $120K/yr
>>
networking (Routing/Switching and related) != "networking" (hooking up windows PCs and installing adobe)
The former is the one that pays well, but you don't learn it in any "networking" degree, which teaches the latter.
>>
>>61537241
>The stuff that is automated is grunt work, which will just make the junior positions rarer
No wonder why I can't fucking find any positions aside from senior ones.

Core networking, dont pay well, at least at Portugal, even helpdesk is better payed
>>
>>61533586
Go for programming and add a networking course or learn the networking curriculum your self. You can get all the information you need through cisco which is who you're going to want to get your networking certs from
