Without turning this into a blog about my life I wish to live off the grid, however I'm a sucker for tech and do not wish to go full Amish.
This thread is for discussing how one could live self sufficiently (which includes not paying monthly taxes) with the aid of modern knowledge/technology.
The hardest issue imo is internet, that's not something you can steal from your neighbors if you're living innacabin. All the ISPs I can think think of require eternal payments and I am yet to find a good loophole.

just live in a farm with an ISP nearby
works just the same
Well, you could mooch off of free public wifi if you're within range (or rig up a ridiculous antenna for long range shekelsaving). Of course, the speed, latency, and security take a nosedive (not to mention possible blacklist nonsense). There's also the blackhat approach of cracking a shit router from an unsuspecting neighbor, but that has some serious legal risks to consider.

Thanks for the info, I'll look into it.

I take the challenge.
First you need the computer that will not break or can be easily repairable, so is probably a thinkpad. Buy some spare parts and the tools to be sure you won't need to come back too soon.
Second, the software. If you didn't hear about Source Mage GNU/Linux now is the time. This OS can not only work with source code, it can save it to install and re-install offline, saving bandwidth if you are plugged to the internet, but also saving you to be plugged ever again, even if you have to troubleshoot. You can also create your own packages or port them for the package manager automatically take care for you, so got you cover if you are a programmer.
Now the internet, even if you are plugged to the network, maybe is a good idea to save a couple websites, even to set a cache, to save bandwidth. If you have a big list of bookmarks as I do, you can download the best websites and never look back.
Other kinds of materials are for entertainment, and you probably should hoard a big collection of ebooks, movies, music, series, etc.
If you ever want to plug yourself to a network maybe try ham radio, idk. Personally I think this is the part to talk about mesh networks but is going beyond a simple post.
Obviously stuff like the power supply, wired connection, and foods are needed, but maybe you can intersect with /diy/ to see what they think.

You really know your stuff m8, ty.

Yeah, I've been thinking "what if a war shuts down the internet".
Even if nothing happens brings me some good ideas of how to get a relaxed life without boring.
I hope this thread survives long enough to see off the grid alternatives to the internet, like mesh networks.

Thank you for your b8. I came.
Get yourself a workstation class laptop. Get a Lenovo if you enjoy chinese spyware, Dell Precision or HP otherwise. HP ZBook is fine. Put Windows 7 on it if you're a normal, Unix if you are pushing 40 and have never kissed a girl.
Get a nice sized solar array and a few batteries, done with power.
If you are poor, get a location where you can cantennae a starbucks, or anywhere where you can get a free wifi connection.
You're welcome.

Can you please take your shitposting away from this thread. Thank you.

For me it's not really end of the world survival knowledge that draws me to this stuff . Without sounding too much like a snowflake but I feel like I'd need this very specific lifestyle to be happy. A 9-5 job just wouldn't fulfill me, I'm not lazy I just need to go my own way and do my own thing otherwise I just can't be happy.
