Consumer mentality, I guess. Actually I made a Free Hardware project myself a few years ago and wasn't funded with even one dollar. Other "Free Hardware" Projects that have been scams (never delivered) or clealy liers about the "free" part have been funded left and right. People want to be part of the botnet, I guess.
