It is worth getting a mechanical numpad if you need it. Where do you think you are?
>>

I got a cheap mechanical one, since it was like $7 more
I think its worth for those few times I actually do need a numpad
>>
>>61514156
How does one go about making 180g cherry switches? I have a modular board and a pile of cherry greys on order, so if they're not enough I'd like to know how to make them even tougher.
>>
>>61514156
have my realforce for almost 6 years now
clean it regularly and it still works great

I'm not saying it's better than some mechanical ones out there, but definitively in the top rankings
also, even though they cost quite a bit, I will definitively get another board with topre switches when this one breaks

lastly, to all you folks who want to buy a keyboard, reading up on it doesn't mean shit
sure, you want best bang for your buck
but when it comes down to it you have to try out the switches yourself.

get a keyboard on amazon, because it's super easy to send back and try out another one
>>
>>61515108
You get heavier springs then swap them out
>>
>>61515319
Yeah I googled it. Thanks though.

Although I disagree with your use of the word difinitively you make a good point.

Maybe not the second part, but the bit about trying the switch is definitely true.
>definitely
I bought a capacitive with 30g switches and I double press all the time, but really enjoyed cherry greens, so I got a modular board with cherry greys so I don't make a tonne of noise for online gaming.

I dunno, I've been typing on a Ducky One with Cherry MX Reds for a while, and while I can get used to it, it's very clear that I type better with a tactile board.

Let's say I bought a chink keyboard (ajazz ak33) and I don't dislike the feel of it.
Let's say I want to customize it a little.
If I wanted to buy custom keycaps the only two things I should look for is the switch type and key size, right?
And i guess there are also default sizes to look for, so that's not a problem as well, right?

Because looking specifically for the model I own the only things I found are:
a full set on aliexpress
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Ajazz-AK33-ABS-Side-Carving-White-Gray-Black-Keycaps-82-Keys-for-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard-Switches/1880240_32791697266.html
this nice little set, but only on a malaysian online shop
http://jmgaming.my/products/AJazz-13-Key-caps-mechanical-keyboard/319

how would you go about it?

It's just the barrel, from pre-production out-of-spec rejected runs. I.e. a literal meme with no practical value.

Of course people pay hundreds for keycaps that actively harm typing, so if anything this price seems a bit low.

1. Check whether your keyboard has non-standard keys
2. If it doesn't, literally any cherry set will work. Make sure it's PBT, has high-quality legends, and in a profile you like.
3. If it does have non-standard keys, good fucking luck, off you go hunting, searching, mixing and matching.
>>
>>61518863
your keyboard is quite nonstandard even compared to other 75% layout keyboards. you pretty much have to accept gaps between keys and mislabeled keys and such
>>
>>61519877
>>61519916

Yeah, sadly digging some more I found
this https://www.massdrop.com/talk/1380/ajazz-ak-33-keycaps-set
and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03dnMCNkyZg
and realized that the keys I wanted to change the most (esc and arrows) are the most nonstandard ones.
Shame.

I prefer a boring keyboard to gaps, though.

Thanks.

Yeah, I just wanted to try a mech keyboard for cheap and got this one for ~40€ with the prime days offers.
It didn't even occurr to me that keyboards were customizable just by switching keycaps and that there were standards.
I thought every brand had their closed standards, and the colorful ones I saw from time to time were born that way.
Now that I know, no big deal, though.

Looking for a keyboard with a layout close to the vortex race 3 but with matias quiet clicks, does something like that exist?
>>
>>61514568
I've desoldered all the keys in my filco many, many times. It's very tedious work, but it's not that bad - you get good at soldering very quickly. However, I feel as if it's better to use the heavier spring with clears. I tried to use 45g springs or something, and those weren't enough to push the stem back up so it felt horrible.

I never owned a Mechanical Keyboard in my life due to mostly the absurd price they have although I understand why they have it.

Are Outemu Blue a good choice for someone like me?

I like the RGB lighting and the reviews praise the product, but that might just be Buyers justification.
>>
how can i make mechanical keyboards silent. they are too fucking loud
>>
>>61520813
There's always a bit that's leftover that keeps the part trapped. Solder sucker never gets everything. So you try to suck a bit more but no it won't come out. Have to try to wiggle it out while melting pads one at a time.
>>
>>61520837
topre + dental band
>>
>>61520780
Yea it is a little. I'd say it's easier to desolder than most electronics, because there are less small components to fry - melting the plastic on the switch doesn't really do anything.

The only way I ever desolder shit quickly and efficiently is with a solder pump. Soldering wick is okay, but it takes too long and you may melt something. All you gotta do is heat up the solder at the pins, give it a good succ and it should be pretty clean. I got some shitty solder pump from Amazon for cheap - sucks to clean, but works well.
>>
>>61520852
Maybe mine is just shit then because it always leave a small enough film over the hole that it keeps the component trapped. And then it won't suck that last bit out.
>>
>>61520016
What keycap profile is the keyboard in the center using and how do you get custom legends on none standard keycaps?
>>
>>61520849
Ironing out those foam pads from elite keyboards works really well for topre.

>>61520837
As far as I know, there isn't much you can do beyond o-rings for cherrylike switches.
>>
>>61520865
If it doesn't all come off, then just resolder the switch and try again. I've had that happen to me too, but I've never ripped a pad off.
>>
>>61520881
The chink topre clones I have come dental banded out of the box, might have to swap the domes for 55g, 35g is way too light

Who ever wrote this is retard for not using google. The spring in topres only has ~3g of resistance and offers no tactile feedback, it only there to serve as the actuation mechanism. Its the rubber dome that provides all the tactility. And buckling springs don't have a rubber dome at all, its a membrane sheet. Also that "guide" is very very outdated

If it's romer-g consider necking yourself. If it's one of the ones using cherry switches ok.

Keep in mind that since it's using cheap-ass ABS keycaps it's probably worth like $60 at most, and you're going to want to get a good PBT replacement set which is another $70 or so.

It would be useful if you took the time to actually learn it. Which can be said about any alternative layout like Dvorak. It's probably going to take me years until I get to the same WPM I have with regular Romaji input.

This isn't a dvorak vs qwerty kind of deal. Kana input has declined heavily in Japan since the 90s with better IME conversions. Romaji input is superior since you don't need to use the number row so often.

Romer-g was made for two things:
- reduced travel length
- leds in the centre
It uses two contacts which means that it will usually end up developing some sort of chatter issues over time. It's also not a well-proven design, being pretty new and proprietary, and being "gaymer" doesn't bode well. Perhaps worst of all, the completely non-standard stem means you will NEVER be able to replace the keycaps, simply because romer-g sets don't exist. This is Bad(tm) because the stock keycaps are really cheap ABS with crappy printing.

Something like Kailh speed switches are even faster than romer-g, but they're normal cherry (albeit not original Cherry MX, which nowadays doesn't actually matter too much) so they have none of the disadvantages.

Use the buyer's template to get some actual recommendations.
>>

OK for the price, but:
>unstable space bar

I have this keyboard:

It claims to have n-key rollover and anti-ghosting. Over usb, when I test using aquakey, certain key combinations do indeed seem to be n-key. However, there are small key combinations that won't work.

For example, if I hold down W+E, then try to press P, the P doesn't register. If I hold A+S+D, pressing Y, U, or I, also doesn't register.

Is this because I'm using it over USB? I tried to plug it in with PS/2 with an ancient adapter I have (at least 15 years old), but PC wouldn't see it. Have keyboard USB to PS/2 adapters changed or something? Is my keyboard even capable of working over PS/2? I can't find anything online or in the manual.

it doesn't have n-key rollover then unless there is some special feature (dip switch or key combination) to turn n-key rollover on/off

>Is my keyboard even capable of working over PS/2?
probably not, it's probably usb only, but remember that you can't hotswap ps/2 keyboards, you have to reboot and make sure your bios settings don't disable ps/2

Do you guys have any ideas on how to get it to work, or should I just give up and find another keyboard? I'll settle for really anything wireless with clicky switches at this point, bonus for backlit. I just need something that'll let me comfortably navigate my computer when I'm using the Steam Link.

Its funny since you need to buy a Japanese kobo case for a Taiwanese keyboard, then put on some Chinese keycaps, all to look like tool.

Does anyone make stepped caps lock keys with Cherry MX stems?
I heard that most of them have the stem off-center meaning that they don't fit on most boards. Why would that be?
I checked the stepped caps lock keys on the old membrane keyboards I have and there's plenty of room for a stem near enough to the center that it wouldn't cause it to be structurally challenged.

Give me a quick rundown on how to qmk
>>
>>61544641
There are a lot of reasons to use an Ergo board, but instead, you picked a shitty one that serves nobody but your own smirkness. Well-done.

An off center stem rather defeats the purpose of stepping the key for stability. It's supposed to be in the middle of the part of the key you actually press.

As if it is unamerican to buy chinese things.

Buying chinese things is like the epitome of capitalism
>>
>>61547350
Nah, buying mechanical keyboards made in murica is the American thing to do.
>>
>>61533325
There are still F keys you bellend they are just on a function layer

I've got the 810 which I would assume is similar but it uses the Romer switches. It's a nice kb but I tried a K70 today and kinda regret getting the 810 now.

A keyboard is not really a super complicated design. It is not gonna make it any better to have an american do it than to have a chinese person do it.

So why not pay less. This country was built on capitalism so more capitalism seems like the solution.

Also go Taiwan, Vietnamese, South Korean, or Thai manufacturer, not China or Japan. Japan is too expensive and China is too workers doing meth and heroin on the jobsite.

>So why not pay less
That's funny cause you were gonna pay more moeny for a shitty chink keyboard then an American one with much better build quality. But hey caveat emptor.

>There are still F keys you bellend they are just on a function layer
Oh you stupid limey shithead. Problem is that sometimes you have to press the F key AND THE FUCKING key that F is mapped to. Go back to sucking dick.
>>
>>61547160
to be t b h, I used the step as a reference for my left hand instead of the the bump on the F key, also helped with finding modifiers quickly.
I wouldn't think having it stepped or not would help stability much. I'm mostly judging stability of it by the fact that you can press the normal capslock key anywhere without any issues despite the lack of stabilizers and its size.

hey autists, how to otemu blue switches compare to cherry mx blues?
>>
>>61548961
They're louder, higher pitched, and more inconsistent. On some of the keys I can get them to click, but the switch won't actuate and on others I can get them to actuate, but no click.

>>61548943
I agree. Still ordered one tho :^)

My first mech was an e-element with outemu blues, latter I got a ducky tkl with cherry blues. At first they felt very similar like there was no difference at all, however after 6 months of using cherry blues I went back to the outemus and I can feel that they were a lot harder to press down, while the tactility didn't feel as consistent as cherry blues. I prefer cherry blues simply cause they're a lot more quieter and consistent.

Look at the new photo - you don't even have a SUBJECT picked out.

I'm sure it will be OK though - Who needs talent? You can carve out a career with your gaping vagina.
