Looking to get a new Leptop to install Linux.
HP has been pretty shitty in the past but these do look sweet.

Should I get an Envy or an XPS 13?
>>
>>61512521
Used T420
>>
>>61512521
You got a budget?
>>
>>61512625
Not even gonna line man, those are clunky af...
prefer a thinner laptop if possible.
>>
>>61512676
Less than 1K, could wiggle though.
>>
>>61512693
If you want to cheap out, throw GalliumOS onto a chromebook (make sure it's not an eMMC drive).

Pass on hidpi for now, linux has all sorts of problems with it unless you're going text only. To be fair though, hidpi is a pain for everyone. Give it some time and it'll be good.

XPS13 might be a good choice if you can find one on sale and want thinness. HP is tolerable these days(find a machine not build on Monday, Wednesday or Friday). Maybe look at other manus?
>>
didn't you make the same thread yesterday?
Do not buy consumer HP stuff, it's shit and will break.
>>
>>61513128
It wasn't me anon... but yeah, fuck HP.
>>
>>61512693
T470s
>>
>>61512521
you know what to do anon
>>
>>61513307
Never seen this one.
Looks chinese and cheap af tho...
Any good?
>>
>>61512521
XPS 13 is best for Linux
>>
>>61513443
Yeah xps will have better support they have a version that ships with Ubuntu
>>
>>61513460
I would just get that maybe and call it a day

There is a sale on now for Dell.com
>>
>>61513385
pretty good fampai.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H_hnRBi8IA
>>
>>61513474
Most definitely that's an option but the 13" is too small a screen for me, also the 15" one has lots of problems from what I read.
What do?!
>>
>>61513443
except for the gimped thunderbolt 3 port it's breddy gud
>>61513157
HP is okay, just get their pro stuff. Like the Elitebooks, or whatever else product lines they got. They're okay laptops, but a little expensive.
Unironically, if you don't want a stylus, I'd go with a macbook, but idk how loonix support is.
>>
>>61513553
What problems?

If you want battery life get the 97wh version
>>
>>61513561
The stylus isn't a bad idea actually.
Could double down as a tablet for drawing/zbrush option though.
>>
>>61513540
Not bad!
Do you own one or is this a meme?
>>
>>61512625

This. There is no other laptop which works better with Linux.

>>61512679

Get a T420s then faggot
>>
>>61513624
I got a HP elitebook x360 just for that. If you're a student or something, you can get quite decent discounts. I got the 7300U version with pen for the price of the 7200U one without, which is a good price I think.
I'm pretty happy with it so far. No idea about loonix support though. A manjaro vm runs pretty smooth so far.
>>
>>61513639
I've been waiting for the refresh (that just happened). Every review of this unit has seen nothing but praise. The only real issue is importing one.
>>
>>61513643
>edgy
>>
>>61513700
Why would that be an issue?
Alibaba doesn't ship to the US or Chinese imports banned or something?
>>
>>61513728
Does not have the proper certifications for sale in the US.
>>
>>61513821
Meaning it's not "consumer safe"?
Or maybe Apple is scared shitless of those taking its business down and pulled some strings on the side...
>>
>>61513821
Just means if customs checks it you will probably have to pay a fee.
>>
Get a couple year old XPS 13 for like 550-600 bucks.
>>
>>61513307
Can I put gentoo on this
>>
>>61514210
OP here: Was thinking the same thing but for Arch.

>>
>>61514210
If you have to ask you shouldn't be using gentoo.
>>
>>61514210
It's not an issue of what you *can* put Gentoo on, but what you *can't*.

If you can't, you're not trying hard enough.
>>
>>61513307
looks good, does ubuntu works well in these? anyone tried?
>>
>>61513540
Hot Damn these are nice!
If only they'd sell a slight bigger screen size one I'd buy one. But for 750 bucks can't beat it.

It has terrible coil whine, and the Ctrl key is in the wrong place. You cannot remap Fn and Ctrl in BIOS or in the OS.

I bought one and had to send it back.
Fuck Dell and fuck the XPS 13.

Get a ThinkPad. You'll thank me.
>>
>>61515573
What? You're the only person hating on these.
Valid points but aren't you nitpicking here though?
>>

Why not just the T470 with bridge battery

What the fuck are you talking about, the xps is fucking fantastic. Bought a few of these for my company to shut up the end users. Slim as fuck, great screen and battery life. I've yet to experience coil whine, is this common?
>>
>>61514714
I haven't tried Ubuntu but Arch works fine.

The 10hr battery life is a LIE. More like 5 at the most. Xiaomi Air 13 with the i5 6200u btw.
>>
>>61516118
Nice, will definitely keep that in mind.
Arch user here looking for a new laptop, casual gaming at the most.
But yes, that Xiaomi has me interested.

I installed Ubuntu on my Asus laptop and it's been great.

>>61516164
Just general rage towards HP ever since I had bought one of their Desktop models that went to shit.
>>
>>61515573
To each their own but most people don't notice those problems

And for the record it is one of the most quiet in fan noise laptops, the only quieter is the surface laptop
>>
>>61515755
I wish. I was so fucking stoked to get XPS 13.
It was a massive disappointment.
The keyboard is crap, but I returned it because of the coil whine.

None of the major reviews that I read on XPS 13 mentioned it. All the reviews basically said, "it's an absolutely excellent machine, but the webcam is in a weird spot. You should buy one"

There are a few YouTube reviews where coil whine was mentioned.

So I bought one knowing that it was a phenomenon. Thought to myself, "how bad could it really be?"

The answer: really, really, really bad.
>>61515967
>coil whine, is this common?
Unfortunately yes.

>To each their own but most people don't notice those problems
Most People use a laptop as a Facebook and Netflix machine.
Most People don't use the Ctrl key.
Most People are idiots.

>fan noise
I don't care about fan noise.
What I do care about is the weird electronic chirping noises it makes under partial load.

I was duped by the XPS 13's developer-friendly marketing.
>>
>>61516433
The fucking control key is in the default spot

That means it's in a good spot for most people
>>
>>61515573
>You cannot remap Fn and Ctrl in BIOS or in the OS.
you can remap in the OS if you use GNU/Linux and OP said that's what he's doing. also, it's the Thinkpads that have ctrl in the wrong space buttboy.

I have the laptop in op's pic (Spectre x360).

it's damn fucking good. 4K screen and SSD and the works. Using it right now in bed. AMA.

how's it feel to be a ramlet?

It feels fucking good knowing laptops like mine are the reason why 8gb of ram is 70$
>>
just get a dell precision m4700 or later faggot
>>
I'm in the same predicament.
I need a 15" screen and something 1080>

Why is it so fucking hard to find something new and decent. I don't care about price. Ive been thinking about just bending over and buying a fucking macbook pro.
>>
>>61512521

??

>>
>>61512625
I was just thinking about getting one. T420 or T420s though? And which CPU should I be looking at?
>>
>>61516213
I've got one of their elite desktops from around 2009. Still using it today and it's good.
>>
>>61513553
Posting from a 15 FHD.
Mine has zero issues. I love it.

There are some folks who got theirs with issues but it's not the majority. There is an issue with the QC consistency but if you get a good one, you're golden.

Just make sure you can return or exchange it if there is any problem.
>>
>>61517920
>in the default spot
I'm less concerned with the layout as I am the relative distance between keys. For example, the distance between the left Ctrl key and the C key is approximately half an inch larger on the XPS 13 than it is on the full-size desktop keyboard that I'm typing this on.

>That means it's in a good spot for most people
Didn't you read my comment?
Most people don't even use it.

>>61518086
>you can remap in the OS if you use GNU/Linux
No you can't. You are wrong.

>Thinkpads that have ctrl in the wrong space buttboy.
Lenovo and Apple are the only (as far as I know) laptop manufactures to get the Ctrl/Fn key placement such that the keyboard feels the same as a normal, non-laptop keyboard.
>>
since i5 is just a dual core on a laptop, should I just get an i3?
>>
>>61515573
>the Ctrl key is in the wrong place
How come in your picture it's in the right place?
