I've got a damaged W510. Screen flickers crazy, on-board DisplayPort not working, however the ones on the docking station are working fine.
Any ideas how to check where my W510 is failing? The IPS panel just works fine with outer laptops.

Alright you guys. I bought a x1 carbon 2012 model for $370 with 4 gigs of ram and i5 processor.
After buying it I found out the ram is soldered and i cant upgrade it. Feeling pretty sad since i had an option for x220/230 with i7 for the same price. Fml

that's what you get for buying new thinkpads

it's a fair price of those are all the real specs and you don't want to upgrade beyond 8gb ram and 120gb ssd

You know, for what you get with a ThinkPad, it's a good deal, but people on /g/ would urge you to find a better deal, of which there are many.

For the monitor, you can get a cheaper TN 230x and replace it using a Chinese display mod that enables IPS output at 1080p. Probably the best display option for that computer, but that's time and money.

I was looking for a laptop for college, I was using an Ipad Air last year. My dad got a T430 ThinkPad that he's not using anymore cuz he has a more recent one. Is it a durable laptop since he's from 2012 I think ? And could it be used normally ? I'm asking the question because this ThinkPad has been given to my dad to do his job, I guess it has a lot of security inside of it.

Can someone give me some guidance about Windows 8.1 on T420?

What drivers do I need and where do I find them? Lenovo's website is as inconsistent as ever, so probably Intel's site for the chipset first.

The OS will probably find all the network/Bluetooth bullshit and iGPU.

I have Samsung EVO SSD, so I'll download Samsung Magician to optimise that.

Do I need any for the Fingerprint reader, mouse/keyboard, card reader, audio or any of that bullshit?

Do I need any of the Think Vintage software bullshit?

Hello 4chan.

So I bought an IBM ThinkPad T23 on eBay, it's quite nice, seems to work fine, cover is a bit dirty but I can clean that up.

Anyway, I had to buy a universal laptop AC adapter because I didn't have a 16V supply that it needs. The adapter came with a microswitch on the side to switch between 15, 16 and 19.5V and I think I accidentally gave it some 19.5V because I plugged it in, the light on the adapter was flickering, and the off button on the ThinkPad wouldn't work, at all, even for a hard power off.

So, do you think I've screwed up? It still seems to work fine, but do you think I've broken any components?

thx lads

Hello /tpg/

Are there any good thinkpads (or sturdy laptops by other manufacturers) that are 100% passively cooled?

I want something for programming, web browsing, and running a VM occasionally that isn't bulky, doesn't heat up, and is relatively cheap (under $500 preferrably, willing to go up to $600 for very good specs)

Anyone have suggestions?
>>
>>61527050
If it works like the thinkpad version watch out: It will drain the additional battery completely BEFORE touching the primary battery, thus exposing it to horrible wear and tear
>>
>>61527429
while not passively cooled
my T430 can run fanless and under normal operation under windows (ie web browsing and programming etc) Im only at 50 degrees or a bit over (55 at max)
also with thinkpads (and some other laptops) you can specify custom fan curves for example over 60 degrees my fan kicks up to around 1000 rpm or something which is also silent and at 70 it goes up around 2000 which is only audible only if you stick your head up to the grills and maybe and extremely quiet place like a sound proofed room or something similar

optionally there is the X230 but Ive heard those do have a higher tendency to heat up more though youll have to ask around. Ive both heard of people who match what I said about my T430 and people who say the exact opposite

lastly youd also want to have a fan on a laptop so just in case do need the extra performance you can get it sustained

T420s has shit battery life (and battery size is limited) as more of an issue than anything, but you get delicious 1600*900

Otherwise, it goes down to whether or not you mind chiclet keyboard. X230 will have slightly better battery life and you might as well get that over the X220. Bonus points for IPS but you'll probably want to find a new battery either way anyhow

>>
>>61542819
I've owned an x230 and an x230t.

The biggest issue with the x230t, really, is that third-party batteries are much, much, more expensive than x230 batteries.

The IPS they put in the x230t is very nice, though. I would absolutely get an x230t over an x230 if the x230 had one of those godawful TNs.

The thickness really isn't that much of an issue. It just makes the laptop thicker. That's it.
>>
>>61543731

The T430s I have has probably one of the worst laptop screens I've ever seen.

I think the T430 uses the same panel?

You can just sub in the Alienware M14x R2 HD+ screen if you want something nice, though. So don't worry too much.
>>
>>61543788
Been looking those screens up, really I think the screen is my main concern at this point because I will be editing photos and illustrations with it. so i got a t420 with intel graphics and i kinda regret not getting one with nvidia GPU. is there a way i can get nvidia in there by replacing the mainboard? is it even worth it?
>>
>>61543763
The IPS screens are nice and bright and have good colors, and they also have bad image retention issues

Probably

I am in need of a thinkpad that fits this criteria.
>>
>>61543763
So would you recommend I get the 2nd hand 2year old x230t?

270$ is actually pretty cheap for my country since everything is about 30% more expensive.
>>
>>61544427
anything built in the last 7 years

surprised they say those specs, usually they inflate the requirements to convince you that you need to buy brand new shit and conveniently the book store sells the new junk

Yeah I am surprised too. I have been looking at this T430.. I wonder if it is overkill.

>>
>>61543731
Where'd you buy from? Thinking about getting a refurb from Newegg or Amazon.
>>
>>61544487
Again, if you could elaborate?

Like I said its pretty cheap for my country, a new one costs about 840$.

I understand parts are super cheap as well, and if the battery is bad I can replace it - correct me if I am mistaken, this is just something I heard about TP that they are easy to get parts for.
>>
Recently I sold my T420 and I'm mainly using my desktop now, though I am looking for a ThinkPad with relatively new hardware that runs under $1K.

I did use the ThinkPad buyer's guide and I mainly got interested in the T540P because of its 1080p screen, I'm just wondering what you guys would go for. The X series really appeals to me as well, seems comfy af.

if you want it and think it's a good deal then go for it, the tablets aren't bad computers they are just a bad compromise between a laptop+tablet

the non-tablet is a much better laptop and chink tablets are much better tablets, and cheaper
>>
>>61544572
I'd love a non-tablet one but I haven't found anything for sale, closest I got was a new from the box still with warranty Asus X541N for the same price (again, second hand) I don't know if its better but it is bigger and with worse specs.

I am asking so much about the x230t because thats the only OKish laptop out there right now thats affordable.

What I want to know is whether or not it stands the test of time, and buying a 2y.o one will it last 2~3 more years or die on me on 1/2 a year.
>>
>>61544497
Holy shit kek I was looking at that one too, except it's $239 for me?

Mine was a lucky eBay auction, it looked almost brand new and he only had two of them so I think it was a good moving picking it over an X230. UK Amazon is usually badly priced and obviously Newegg for us has so little to offer

The problem I'm selling is that both the descriptions read that they have 1366x768, when one of the reviewers got a screen that was 1600x900. I wanted to get one to replace the screen with an M14x R2 screen, but you can't do that if you have the 1366x768

Pic related is the laptop in question. It looks like it's in good condition, the only downsides are the screen and processor. Would /TPG/ approve?
Also, after several Google seaches I can't find any documentation of people trying to mod in a 1440p screen, is it possible?
>>
>great processor
>decent graphics card (play relatively modern games on low 60+ fps)
>1080p panel
>good inputs both keyboard and touchpad and nipple
>14"-15.6"
>less than 500€

Currently looking at hp 8570w, but I really don't want a tenkey on a laptop. Any better suggestions?
>>
>>61514807
** +50 usd on the x240 if you plan on using the trackpoint
>>
>>61522865
Should be good to go familia. Make sure to spend the extra bit of currency on a new panel: nearly all used displays develop have minor pressure spots and faded backlighting with time.
>>
>>61526189
If you're browsing through eBay check for listing with zero keyboard shine and with matte finish still on the corner of the top lid.

These parts are the most overt indicators of wear and most people don't bother to replace them.
>>
>>61525874
these arent great laptops i work for a company that does the exact same thing and we get these in all the time the screen is bad and the keyboard is a bit cheap feeling and not much travel so $200 is a bit too much $130 max is what i would pay
>>
>>61511149
is there any way to fix the bullshit that is the fucking stupid ultrabay battery
I want better battery life but I've heard that when the ultrabay battery is in use that it drains that one first and then switches to the main battery a couple minutes later.
There has got to be some software that can at the very least switch this operation around so switching the main battery makes more sense.

Hardmode: It has to work for windows7 because of school and programs that only work on windows machines. I don't really want to fiddle with a vm sorry.
