What's a better size for laptops 17" or 15.6"?

Are 17" notebooks too big?

just use a tablet

Really depends. For gaymen 17 is the best, big because they are less likely to fuck up the cooling solution as they have a good amount of space available. For light work/home (net, movies, office) use, I'd say that 13" is ideal, and for actual work (programming, sysadmin stuff, photo and video editing) the best would be a 15".

But then again if you have to carry it with you 24/7 then the smaller the better. I also depends a lot on the actual model. My DELL XPS 13 has a 13,3" screen in a body that is about the same size as consumershit 11,6" netbooks.
>>
14 or 15.6 bezel less
>>
I'd like a laptop to use for watching YouTube. Browsing 4chan. Playing indie games. And RuneScape. And typing shit to people in chat rooms.

Whats a good choice for me?

macbook or surface

Budget?
>>
>>61505386
Shit I'm not too sure. I don't want my budget set too high because then I might as well get a desktop and build it.
I'd say around $500
>>
>>61504939
I find 14" the best since anything above that has trouble fitting into a backpack.
>>

macbook or dell xps*

I carry a 17” all day around for work, and I'd carry a 19” if they made non-gayming-shit models.

I don't understand why people feel such a difference over a kilo or so. I ain't exactly swole and I can barely tell the extra weight, but I sure appreciate the extra screen.
>>
It's not the size, it's the bulk. You have 17'' gaymen laptops that are like 10 pounds and 2'' thick. At that point you're not going to be carrying it anywhere so you might as well get a desktop.
On the other hand if you get a 17'' with no DVD drive and that's reasonably light, then you get the benefits of a good screen while still being able to carry it around.

All that being said, if you're not gaming, then you will be just fine with a 12'' thinkpad. An X220 is more than fine for what you described, and you can get one for $200 easily - just make sure you look for one with an IPS screen.

I honestly think 15'' is possibly the worst size for a laptop, and really niche. If you're programming you don't need more than 12-13'' and portability+battery life is a plus; if you're gaming you'll want to sacrifice those for a better 17'' screen; if you get a 15'' you have the worst of both worlds.

t. owns a 15'' and regrets it
>>
I just got a 15". Anything bigger than this is definitely too big. This thing is already so big I'd rather not move it around at all.
>>
>>61505564
Im going to best buy later today. What's a good laptop for someone who wants rs to browse 4chan, read Manga, play Old-school RuneScape, watch Netflix and porn. I want a 1080p screen.
>>
>>61505564
>At that point you're not going to be carrying it anywhere

Yes you are, and yes I am.
>>
>>61505490
>a kilogram
More like at least two. My thinkpad is like 1.2 and my 15'' is over 3.
Then there's the bulk - I can't easily take out my asus while on the train or bus, or if I'm on some random table without a lot of space, or even in my bed.
And finally the battery life - again, my used thinkpad with a several-year-old battery lasts around three times as long as my big one, so I can really work on it all day even while travelling around and not being able to charge it anywhere.

macbook pro 15 retina with memebar
>>
>>61505603
A $300 Chromebook so when it inevitably breaks just like your $2000 memebook will you can replace it cheaply.
>>
What about something for $600 or less
>>
>>61505623
Yeah, I'll definitely grant battery life is a legitimate concern. I put it back on the docking station during lunch break so it's not a problem for me, but it would be great if i could swap the useless DVD drive for a second battery.

I disagree that it makes a difference over a 14" or 15” model on the train (unless it's like an Indian cattle car), on a cramped desk, or in bed. I use it for all those without problems. I'll give you the bus, though.
>>
>>61505603
Step 1. Don't go to best buy
Step 2. Order online
There will almost certainly be barely any choice in a physical shop, and you're unlikely to find something good.

As for actual recommendations, a used X220 fits every single one of your requirements except the 1080p screen. Can you settle for less?

>>61505662
Yes, it will work, but it will also cost 3-8 times as much
>>
>>61505686
Can I play RuneScape and terraria and such.
Why are chrome books so much cheaper.
>>
>>61505711
You can install some Linux distro on it which I'm pretty sure can run Terraria. And Runescape is still run in the browser right? Should work out of the box.

They're cheap because Google realizes nobody's going to buy one if they were expensive.

>>61505697
>I disagree that it makes a difference over a 14" or 15”
I was talking more compared to a 12'' or 13'' one. It is extremely convenient, won't annoy anyone around you, you can pop it in and out of your bag near-instantly. A 15'' or 17'' one can certainly be used in these cases, but it's going to be a lot more awkward and unwieldy.

Also add airplanes to that list - a 12'' will fit on almost any table and is piss-easy to take out of the bad under your legs, while a 17'' will be a huge hassle and might need to be carefully positioned on the tiny table.
>>
>not getting a 7" UMPC
>>
>>61505758
Oh yeah, 12" and under is a different product class altogether. OP asked for 15" versus 17", though.
>>
>>61504939
15.6" is too big. 13" and 14" are about right.
>>
13. If you want 17, just get a desktop
>>
>>61505800
>12'' and under
Thing is under 12'' I think it starts getting into UMPC territory, or "tablet with a bluetooth keyboard" (or even "phone with a bluetooth keyboard") which is completely different.

12'' is basically the cutoff point where you can still have a 7-row normal-sized keyboard, good options for storage/customisability, and decent cooling

>>61505831
Not true, they make pretty portable 17'' these days. You won't use one on your lap but you can very easily carry it between desks (unlike a desktop which you can ONLY use at home)
