Congestion though is still a bitch around peak times. My ISP is one of the cheapest but if I went any cheaper you get those nasty ISPs.

Its like some Orwellian nightmare where a remote town is fully taken over by some corporate overlords

I honestly don't know how anything gets down around here for the bigger places, maybe they all bought dedicated lines or some shit

Also there is a 1TB data cap monthly, as if I could ever download that with 3Mb/s

Some americans are cucked.

Just look at the size of our country, we have so much fucking land to lay fiber on, it would be impossible to be as connected as europe without spending literally trillions of dollars. The entire landmass of Europe is only slightly larger than the US. But europe has 750M+ people paying taxes with various governments in nice densely populated areas. The US is basically the same size, but only 350M people, so there is a LOT more space to cover without people living there to pay for the cost of the infrastructure.

With that being said, if you live in a decent tech city in the US, you will have decent internet.

to be honest I know it sounds bad, but I live in a very rural area, a good 45 mins from the nearest "big" city and i get these speeds for $45 a month from spectrum.

>>
>>61504444
nice digits

I don't particularly like testmy.net, they use tiny file sizes to test with that simply are too small for faster connections to do anything with.

on 1gbps, downloading 128MB test file my connection only gets a chance to ramp up to ~300mbps, but if they used a 1-2GB test file, i'd have easily ramped up to 700mbps+
>>
>>61504405

bringing all the backwater rednecks online is was led to the viability of propagating brainlet propaganda on the (((social networks))), which ultimately ended up with trump

the US problem is and always has been deliberate intellectual starvation of the population. they keep them dumb and complacent so they will continue to wave their flags and legitimately believe that their borderline third-world existence is the best the world has to offer

ever wonder why they've been trained to shout down everyone with "KEK! KEK! KEK!"? because they're the ones being cucked into an entirely new dimension. but this way, they'll never realize it, because "it's urryone else that're them there cucks!"

$20 says it's been given over to another ISP by your county or some other local government.

FiOS loves deploying to rich areas, especially if they already have a CO in the area.

GPON strands can go 20km without an active repeater. If you're within that distance to a CO, it's most likely some other reason than Verizon simply doesn't want to.

It's either cost, or regulation.

>>
>>61506508
Meh, they charge a $500 install fee, and a $500 activation fee for that service, so they rape you a bit on initial charges.

On top of that, since it's 2gbps, you can't actually use the full bandwidth unless you are paying up for 10gbps networking equipment, which would conservatively run you at least $500 (even if buying used), and upwards of $1,500 depending on how large your network is and what upgrades you'd need to do.
>>
>>61506585
Google charges a hefty install fee for fiber also.

If you want those speeds you need to be willing to pay the fees, and hardware.
>>
>>61506613

They over provision because the Video on demand service is run through your internet, so if you watch a 1080p VOD movie on your TV, you should still get basically your full bandwidth you pay for on your internet package.

Verizon's 1gbps is actually 1024/1024mbps provisioned, but because of hardware limitations of 1gbps ethernet, you'll only see about 945mbps at most.

>Fucking amazing deal, I wish I had Verizion around here
My only real complaint is with Youtube streaming, during peak use hours, even with 1gbps, 720p and 1080p youtube turns into a stuttery buffering mess.

Between 6-11pm every night during the summer, and friday/saturday night the rest of the year youtube becomes unwatchable without first jumping through a VPN.

Going through a VPN changes the routing to youtube and I can watch 4k without buffering at all, even though without the VPN even 720p would be stuttery shit.
>>
>>61506849
see
>>61504246

My ISP only offers 2 speeds, 50/50 and 1gbps both are fiber.
>>
>>61506853
That's strange, how come? Even 15 mbps should be enough for YouTube.
>>
>>61506873
It's routing congestion, either on my ISPs network, the backbone peering between my ISP and google, or google itself.

Since going through a VPN fixes it that means it's most likely my ISP, or the backbone provider between my ISP and google.

My VPN goes through a different backboon peering server and so even though it's a longer more roundabout connection, it's not congested like my normal ISPs connection to youtube is, so videos don't have to buffer at all.

Hard to say exactly where the fault lies and who is responsible. The solution is for my ISP, or the backbone provider to install more routing/peering capacity, but that costs $$.
>>
>>61506902
Makes sense. You should be using a VPN anyways, so it's not a big deal at all.

>>
>>61507006
If you have someone else in your house with decent credit and a different SSN, you can cancel your service (give them a specific date ~15-30 days in the future) then sign up for new service under the other person's info, and have the installation date set for the day after your old service is cut off.

That way your downtime is only a single day, and you still get new customer pricing.
>>
My ISP is thru the city, they get it from Century Link. Sucks ass. But they're the only game in town. Cable/internet/electric/water/sewer, all thru the city on one bill. I pay $46 for 10Meg service. No data caps though, they don't care what I "download" either. Could get 100 mbps but I'd be paying close to 100 for it and they don't the bandwidth to supply it full time. Ten meg is only service plan where you actually see 10 meg all the time.

Lived in Austin, moved to San Antonio, so still waiting on Google to get their shit together. The install fee is $300 after which you can get the lesser service for free, or get the paid service for X months and install is free.

The real problem is if you (or whoever lived at your house at that time) doesn't get it during the limited time that the "fiberhood" is open for new customers, you're fucked. Maybe in a few years they might open it up again.

>Had TWC before switching to glorious mastterrace Google Fiber.
>Was actually pretty decent.
>Moving away from parents house in a few weeks to town 20 miles away.
>Only reasonable option is AT&T 18Mbps for $70 a month.
>TWC Spectrum doesn't serve area
>1Gbps fiber provider is located less than 2 miles away, but doesn't have state approval to cross train tracks.

SCREAMS EXTERNALLY

I would suck dick for Spectrum

moving from 1gbps to 18mbps would be disgusting.

I was on 15mbps back in 2007.
>>
>>61513494
Only other option is to get Mediacom with a cap (400GB) or to get Mediacom business 50/1 Mbps for like $200 a month.
>>
I'm kind of surprised how much dick American ISPs suck - here in the UK we pay £40/month for 100mbps

You can thank the jews for it

there are at least a half dozen examples of 1gbps or similar speeds in the US.

Just like anywhere else in the world, if you live in the middle of fucking nowhere, the majority of people simply aren't going to get decent internet speeds.

All of europe is the size of the US but with 2.5x as many people. Of course you're going to have an easier time connecting everyone to fast internet when you all live much closer together.
>>
>>61501514
They only offer "up to" 60Mbps for $45 in ghettoville

I know my neighbor's TimeWarner "upto" 15Mbps service can peak at 21, but seriously doubt I'd see any more than 35-40 consistently
>>
>>61502199
I don't have TV
I just have internet. I Don't even own a TV.
>>
>>61506717
I know dipshit. Their retention department doesn't want to help me. I tried like 3-5 times. Every time I get angry they say ok let me go ahead and cancel your service.
>>
>>61506853
Same exact complaint here, though my connection is only 50/50mbps. I always test at nearly full speed, rarely below 40mbps, but during peak hours, YouTube buffers even at 1080p, and forget 4k.
>>
>>61512321
>buffalo NY

upgrade your plan then, fuckass. They advertise 60mbps starting speeds all over here.
>>
>>61514802
yeah, i just use a firefox extension that can enable a VPN at the push of a button. If youtube buffers, i press the button. No more buffering.
>>
>>61514892
what extension?
>>
>>61514896
foxyproxy
>>
>>61501514
just before brighthouse became spectrum I got on there plan of 300mbs for like $54, spectrums completely done away with that
>>
>>61501514
Yeah. I got that deal too. 64.99 here though

Its just ok. Speed is sufficient for me, not happy about the price would love more upload

They billing is consistent though and thats a plus. Frontier was always adding phantom charges and bullshit fees out of nowhere. One month they double charged me for my internet and added a random setup fee. Turns out somehow they got me confused with my neighbor who just got the same plan, made no sense. The reps seemed like class a bullshitters whilr spectrums seem like depressive zombies
>>
>>61501514
Not in my area
>tfw you pay $60 a month for 18mbps
>>
>>61514841
If you're a long time customer they won't be able to give you the advertised rates because cable companies are more concerned with getting new customers than keeping their old customers.

Then they wonder why the fuck they lose so many customers.
>>
>>61512244
What exactly is the point of that laptop being his plex server.
>>
>>61509303
I worked for a company that interviewed people who recently dropped or acquired U-Verse for AT&T.

I can tell you fucking horror stories man. That being said, like any ISP, whether or not it works out for you depends entirely on where you live.
>>

Cancel and set up as a new cust. mom or kid or whatever
>>
>>61510076
>No competitor in the area is any better. fucking fuck
At least you have competition in your area dude.

I'm just waiting for them to realize that they can jack up the price as high as they want and I would still have to pay it regardless.

>Try to get services at my house
>Learn that there's an outstanding bill of like $900 attached to that address
>Fight Spectrum for 3 months before they'll let me get service
>8 months later, landlord gets arrested, bank issues eviction notice
>Try to get my service transferred to a new place
>Told the address was serviceable
>Tech comes out and says it's actually not
>Now fighting to get Spectrum to fix the problem that they simultaneously deny and admit to
>It's been 5 months
>Phoneposting forever in the meantime

I fucking hate Spectrum. It's too bad the other options are just as trash. Europeans, count your blessings.
>>
>>61501514
Any company that offers satellite internet because satellite internet is fucking trash. Expensive trash, no less.
>>
>>61501514
I had ATT before Spectrum. What I was told that I was paying $50 for 25Mbits down unlimited internet. When I first looked at my bill, it was $30 for internet, $20 for a phone that I didn't want, and $7 in bullshit fees. Then I saw that my internet was not unlimited and that I had a 1Tb cap. I canceled within fifteen minutes after I found out.

Spectrum, $45 for 60Mbits down. ~$47 including tax. No cap. Not down all the time. latency in gaymes is significantly lower. Feels so much better.
>>
>have brighthouse
>worst pile of shit ever
>slow speeds
>service disruptions so much that techs wouldnt even come out to the house anymore after repeated calls
>get surprise $600 bill for no reason
>refused to fix their mistake
>terminate service
>get flooded with Spectrum mail with all these incentives
>find out Spectrum is brighthouse
>nope.flac
>id rather use AOL dial-up from the late 90's
At least I have phone internet
>>

This sort of thing justifies it when people say "Hitler did nothing wrong"
>>
>>61515215
The deal was too honest. Can't have any of that.
>>
>>61517000
Minimum latency for satellite is around 240ms. Speed of light is a real bitch sometimes.
