Is cryptocurrency /cyb/
>>

I'd say so.
But it certainly depends on the currency and whether it values privacy and security or not.
Although, for real world transactions to prevent local tracking, I would advise the use of physical cash.

tldw: she supposedly reconstructed a crude (but still) image of the desktop by tuning in to the frequency of the RAM of the monitored device (a laptop).

If this is true, does this not mean this method bypasses any relevant digital security because it directly taps into physical processes? "disguising" how bits are switched is impossible isn't it?

why is this not big news? or did I miss something.

>>61491190
I'll keep this as a last resort, but I want to avoid drugging myself to get anything done. I want to fix my attention span so I can study for longer amounts of time
>>
>>61491218
Either print the study material and go to a public library or get a craptop with no networking and go to the library. Make sure the library has no people chatting and that there are people around.
>>
>>61489430
HPE stopped making those enclosures after they bought the SimpliVity bullshit earlier this year, so you might sell them for some good money after you are done wasting electricity on mining.
>>
>>61491178
1. Use the pomodoro method. 25 min focus, 5 min break. Go 2 rounds then do 10-15 minutes break. In the beginning, you can even start lower if you really have trouble. Try 10 min focus, 5 min break and go from there.

2. Clean your space, place the book in front of you, PLANT YOUR FEET FIRMLY ON THE GROUND, and don't move them. I know it sounds silly, but it freaking works.

3. Change the place you use for leaning. I can be very productive in the café I always go to. Usually I just bring the stuff I want to read, write, work on, get a coffee and then start On the other hand, I can't concentrate in a libray for some reason. I don't even mind if people are chatting around me, I just drown it out, or listen to music.

4. Make sure you are not hungry or thirsty. And bring some snacks (walnuts are great! they even look like little brains)
>>
>>61491218
>>61491178
need some discipline, don't think asking here will fix your problem. it's a thing you have to work on yourself, since not everyone is the same.

>>

>>61491331
I realize this, I need more discipline in general and I'm trying to improve on this. I would like some tips on how to improve discipline in general
>>
>>61491399
again, this general wouldn't be my first choice for asking for tips in. but hey whatever.
>>
>>61491399
>>61491331

Discipline does come (to a certain extend) with practice. Which is why I suggest starting easy (like the pomodoro method "light").
You could even set yourself small goals. Instead of saying "I will now read 3 chapters", why not just 1 page and then go from there. Read one page and see if you want to read more. Do that until you come to a point where you can't focus anymore. Take a short break (don't overdo it! Just walk around, do some pushups, grab some snacks, make some coffee/tea, open a window.. stuff like that). And then start easy again.

I used to set myself way too high goals when I simply was not used to working for prolonged periods of time, but the more I did it successfully - on my own terms and goals - the better I got at it.
>>
>>61491300
Is it possible to learn about anything related to programming without actually applying the examples though?
Reading a programming book is good, doing exercises seems more useful.

>>61491469
Well yea, just reading a book will not help you much with programming unless you are already familiar with it.
You can however, write out the code by hand and then type it in later. Or just use a laptop of course.

Although, I cannot for the life of me, read longer text on a laptop.. I need it either in paper form or on my ebook reader.

I have been trying to learn to code forever now and I am so bad at it, is there no hope for me?

example of how shit I am (can't figure out why this does not work):
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <string.h>

int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{

FILE *file = fopen("doc.txt", "w");

char* input;
input = malloc(100 * sizeof(char));
scanf("%c ", input);

if(file == NULL)
{
printf("ERROR: Could not write file...\n");
return 1;
}

fprintf(file,"%s\n", input);

fclose(input);
free(input);

system("PAUSE");
return 0;
}
>>
>>61497603

It fails because this line

input = malloc(100 * sizeof(char));
// should be
input = (char *)malloc(100 * sizeof(char));

You have to cast the first address that malloc returns to the same type of pointer that will be storing it.

>>61497597

You can't anymore, modern systems all come with tons of spyware and even hardware level bypasses to steal your data. IF you take proper precaution and use something like torchat or some other chat service that uses tor or l2p or w/e, you may get 'safe' enough to have an encrypted conversation.
>>
>>61497603
you're closing the malloc instead of the file. it doesn't really make sense. try

fclose(file);

btw you're using "%c" which only reads one character, you might wanna change that to scanf("%s", input); to get a string.

I learned from CS:App, there's lecture vids for it here if interested: https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~213/schedule.html

It also covers return oriented programming/code reuse attacks, which still works. That's when you string a bunch of gadgets together and inject them into the stack to return wherever you want, eventually constructing your own program. It still works, except there was a paper released this month on Gadget Weighted Tagging to try and identify them but it's a framework, and frameworks are terrible when mass deployed so already ways were found to fool it.

Anyway try that course if you like X86 assembly

It was so fun using Immunity Debugger/mona.py on a Windows 7 VM to find gadgets, string em together and get my shellcode running. I've found that this kind of work is really exciting and I'm anxious to get my hands on more resources that I can use to improve my exploit dev process.

Thanks a lot for linking the resource, I'll check it out. Hopefully I can find some quicker ways to get a working ROP chain and maybe also build some exploits that are more portable.

Since this is /cyb/, I'd say GuixSD as it's the future of operating systems.

Here's an org-mode presentation explaining it
http://dustycloud.org/misc/talks/guix/chicagolug_2015/guix_talk.html

The basic gestalt
>configure everything declaratively with one file
>have complete dependency graph
>run VMs/containers .. without a file system, it's just a dependency graph so moving these things around is just transferring some text files
>Hurd is being ported to it, you can run Hurd like a distributed botnet (Hurd already works w/Debian) where one node goes down but doesn't affect the rest, so your OS can never crash or need to reboot
>Decentralized packages, you never need to use GnuPG again because reproducible builds is how you check with GuixSD, not flawed GnuPG. Flawed as in libgcrypt and MITM https://eprint.iacr.org/2017/627.pdf
>>
>>61500851
I feel like GuixSD Gnu-Linux would be so abstract most people wouldn't see the need for it. Even I have a hard time really 'getting' it.

I had fun doing the whole bug bounty thing for a while, even still have an active HackerOne account and a Kasperky bounty through it, but lost interest because it's just too easy to pop some antivirus program and take over somebody's machine. I became more interested in learning verified algorithms, that can't be popped so easily because I think that's what everybody is moving too lately. The years of test/debug methology has crashed and burned and software proofs will become more in demand. This means walled gardens with no way out, so I'd rather get my foot in there first and see what kind of defensive software I can write before they shut us all out and just issue dumb terminals and internet licenses.
>>
>>61501189
That's interesting, I've never heard of verified algorithms before. I'll have to look into that more... I've learned that in security, the next big shift could happen any day so I'm trying to stay on top of emerging trends as much as possible.

Also, you say you managed to get a Kaspersky bounty, any tips for fuzzing/looking for vulns in AV software? I've just finished reading the Antivirus Hackers Handbook and I'm looking for more resources that delve into that particular area of vulnerability research. It seems as though AV is an overlooked area of security when compared to other software products like browsers or document viewers.
>>
>>61500974
I thought it was Guile?

Guile looks interesting. I hope to see games written in Guile.
>>
>>61501390
https://deepspec.org/page/SF/ this looks harder than it is, but if you know some functional language it's not.

I used a SAT solver to find the Kaspersky bug http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mfredrik/15414/index.html it was easy to find but hard to write a PoC for, as they wanted a fully working proof of concept which to me is bullshit (another reason why I don't do bug hunting anymore, too much work to write the PoC). So after 3 weeks I had a working PoC (and discovered another bug in the process) and they offered me a job, which I didn't take. The bounty was not that much either, I felt I could have sold that exploit on some Tor broker site or even to whitehat middlemen for 3x more.

AV is def overlooked, remember it's a daemon with insane levels of priv access and piles of legacy code. A lot of exploits for them were released in that last Wikileaks CIA/Shadowbrokers dump.
>>
>>61501461

>AV is def overlooked, remember it's a daemon with insane levels of priv access and piles of legacy code. A lot of exploits for them were released in that last Wikileaks CIA/Shadowbrokers dump.
Seriously, it's astounding. Plus, all these AV products need to properly parse the most obscure and complex file formats that even the file format authors have a hell of a time understanding, so what are the odds some AV researcher can write bug free code for them? I'm currently making a decision on where to focus the majority of my development time, seems like AV is the right call.

I got seriously started doing bug bounty hunting in software products this year and I can totally relate with your complaint about PoC development time, it can be a major time sink... Hopefully, with enough practice I can cut down on dev time or automate things better.

I think the sort of distrust cyberpunk breeds in taking technology at face value is the perfect breeding ground for cybersecurity. Sure there's a long way to go between an interest and someone working in the field wanting to discuss processes and concepts in depth, but I think we manage to strike a good balance between people here for the look/vibe, people just getting started and learning, people on the path and practising pros like maderas. It's pretty comfy currently and the two streams of /cyb/ and /sec/ have both proven to be unable to sustain individual generals on their own here.
>>
>>61501702
I got the time down, once I started getting the hang of developing working proof of concepts but still it felt like I was just fire fighting a vast inferno with an eye dropper so decided just write better verified software that competes with this bug filled junkware.

>>61501762
The book w/that course,
The Calculus of Computation is really good for teaching you to generate invariants, and armed with that you can now begin to find bugs, and use tools like z3 SMT solver (SMT solver is a SAT solver + decision procedure.) https://github.com/Z3Prover/z3/wiki which is explained here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4606231 but the basics is it's an automated reasoning program to tell you if a program conforms to it's spec or not. If it's not conforming you can exploit it.

Here's a more general/not so academic introduction to them https://yurichev.com/writings/SAT_SMT_draft-EN.pdf

Once you know about these things, you can run them on your own programs, and start to verify their correctness. You can also use induction to prove types are safe, tons of things that everybody should be doing but never does. Programs can be sliced up into modules to make this easier. Anyway, enjoy
>>

not-bunkerbro here, but if you have the cash to burn to lay your own fibre you can look into wireless links.

Some time ago I saw some that look like security cameras, you get 2 of them to point at eachother and it can relay traffic across a street.

More sophisticated systems (like mobile providers) use small parabolic (steering wheel size) antennas called microwave links which run up to a few kms or something.

/x/ theory: The powers that be don't want us to become Hackers, so they make a show where we can live out that fantasie.

But I guess the producers and writer actually bothered to get some "experts" on the team, instead of some shitty CSI hacking "experts".

I mean, either go the Matrix route where you quickly take hacking out of the contemporary context, or do it right from the beginning. Older movies like Hackers while fun to watch, just did not bother so much it seems. Though now that I think about it, the movie 23 (german movie from 1998) was also real. But it's not the most known movie, though a real good one in my opinion.
>>
>>61506041
The actor actually type shit on the keyboard and use the real programs like John or Aircrack. Also, because they have to type it themselves they don't spam the keyboard like complete retards but actually take the time to type it correctly on the first try. That's way they are typing kind of slowly but it still is well edited.
What's bothering be about this show is the way they're are turning the main character into a completely crazy motherfucker. I didn't like the second season because of this

Oh it's not just the movie, the whole actual cyberespionage event and how that was found out through an early example of /cybersec/ is still as relevant.
The events at the other side of the pond are best told by Clifford Stoll himself, the man who discovered the system breaches. Not kidding he himself was eccentric enough to star in a TV movie about the hack.

Oh, nice! Thanks for sharing.

I think I read High-Tech Heretic by Stoll before, but that was years ago. Just give his book another read.

But yeah, overall the movie feels almost like a documentary and has a lot of interesting stuff to look up. Guess I will have to re-watch it soon

How many ITT are involved in various botnets already? I mean stuff like Google, Facebook, apple ecosystem, etc.

I have several gmails, a Facebook, a bank account linked to different things.

Long story short, how does one "reset"? How does a security and privacy minded mindset of now undo the things I did in the past? As it stands my real name is out there for everything and it's creepy to think of it like that. All I have for me now is a laptop with encrypted everything and an emergency USB flash drive with liveboot linux, the tar package of veracrypt, and several encrypted containers with all my personal info inside as a sort of "bug out, gotta leave everything NOW" type deal.

Trouble is, this is an *Android* app. How can you guard yourself from hidden services in the android stack from intercepting the contents?

In today's political climate I would assume that any recent version of Android is shot full of holes from very capable people using access granted by secret court orders.

Only 5 years ago that would be conspiracy talk. Today it is a legitimate question.

>>61508268

You stop, right now. It's pointless to clean up your own blood trail if you're still bleeding all over the place. Facebook and Google won't keep getting your data if you stop giving it to them. Inventory all of the services that have your personal data, and one by one migrate to a replacement (if it's a type of service you can't live without), delete your data from the service, and then delete the account you have if possible. If not, set an absurd password and lose it.

Sure they will have record of what you deleted, but you won't always be who you are right now. You won't always live at 420 Blaze street, you won't always have the phone number 4208675309, you won't always be Jack Johnson, you won't always like MLP, etc etc. Data collected on you loses value over time, because it stops being relevant.

It decided that most people where here for /cyb/ and didn't mind sharing space with /sec/. Which is exactly the problem, we have a bunch of larpers posting pepes and being general shitposters doing nothing but decrease the quality of the thread. I have not seen a single /cyb/ post that has had any substance and improved the general discussion, all we've done is import a bunch of shitposters to bump the thread for us. This is still the best general on the board, but it used to be better.

It is not as if it took more than 10 seconds to find that.

However:
>>61510083
... is correct.

Before it was thrashed it was fairly even, though it seems someone had a single tracked /sec/ mind and skewed it.

Kind of amusing really since /sec/ didn't last long until it was joined by /cyb/.

>>61511010
Well, There are 2 or 3 of us here that post /cyb/ news whenever they pop up. Some times the discussions that follows are interesting.
>>
>>61509347
I know.

Thing is, NSA operated way outside their mandate and has been going everywhere like kudzu. Patriot Act was not really relevant.

And that is why Gen. Hayden had to go: Snowden pulled open the lid. There is a division of powers in the Intelligence world to make sure no one agency gets too much power. When NSA went past these limits it was found to be a danger, the leadership out of control and a new leader was required.

So old Android OS might be safer than recent ones. And it will probably take a decade to get full insight in what has been done, and another 50 years, perhaps 100, before all this mess is declassified.

Only now are things about Mata Hari being declassified and that was a walk in the park compared to this.
>>

>Well, There are 2 or 3 of us here that post /cyb/ news whenever they pop up. Some times the discussions that follows are interesting.
The /cyb/ news seems to be almost exclusively politics (which just ruins threads, lets be honest) or just /sec/ news in disguise.

Since I live in a socialist country, there is a law where non-intrusive infrastructure gets right-of-way by law, so land owners can't really do much about it. They do get a small reimbursement amount per meter, but it's pretty much nothing. I put down 63km, but I also connected all the farms that were nearby to it, for free, with a free 1gbit connection, no limits. The average use per household is ~5mbit. It scales to 10gbit, but I only bought them small er-x-sfp ubiquity routers, if they want more speed they'll have to shell out for the router themselves.

Hello
I'd like to inform you that OpenBSD is the most secure operating system.

In fact, Windows and Apples XNU (XNU is not UNIX) Kernal have both made significant improvements in terms of security mitigations, this infact means that Windows and Mac OSX are safer and less prone to attacks than windows.

Not to mention Systemd, which is suspected to be implanted by the CIA and NSA as a result of hacking attempts.

Reading the leaked Vault 7 documents exploits and keyloggers have been implanted in Windows, Mac OSX, FreeBSD, Linux, and Sun MIcrosystems Solaris.

I'd like to advocate you all on the use of OpenBSD, it is a free and lightweight OS designed for the practical paranoid, it's installation is simple and the average GNU/Linux user can adopt to it very simply.

If you consider yourself educated within Netsec and Cybersecruity, an encrypted OpenBSD machine is the best option you can make.
