Should I sell my i5 7600k & Z270 and my old laptop to buy Ryzen 7 1700 as well as a motherboard/ram for it? It isn't a full system like I left out in a previous post, it's just the CPU/Mobo. All I'd need is memory for it. For reference, my current system is an Athlon 860K at 4.2GHz, 8GB DDR3 1600MHz on an ASrock A78 motherboard.
The Ryzen combo is about $550 USD, so assuming I can sell the laptop for about $200, and the CPU/Mobo for about $350, should I take this route?
I can move the video card, power supply, etc. but for now I was mainly considering the CPU, motherboard, and memory.

Ideally, I'd like to hop on Ryzen over Kabylake because higher core count (6/12 or 8/16 vs 4/4), better stock cooler (or none for 7600k), lower power draw (65W 1600/1700 vs 91W 7600k), and as Ryzen is pushing for more cores, I'd imagine developers will probably slowly start rolling out optimizations for higher core counts. I do some video editing/rendering, do some VM work, and would like to not worry about closing tabs on Chrome to be able to do anything. I'd also like to buy the system to just upgrade soon(tm) and not have to worry about upgrading again for ages (probably AM4's end of life).

I'm indecisive as fuck, and would love some guidance from someone that knows what their stuff, because I sure as fuck don't. Thank you to anyone that can help, I know my post is messy to read, but again, I'm indecisive about everything.

So lately the service of Group Policy Client on my PC has stopped running, or so I assume. What happens is I'll log on and everything will be fine, then after about an hour or so the status on Group Policy Client will be blank and I won't be able to start it up again. When this happens there will be a delay in videos that are played on sites like youtube, and if I close a browser like Firefox and try to launch it again it will take a long time (approximately 10 minutes) to open. I already tried some solutions online like looking into my registry files, but everything there seems to be in the proper place and properly labeled so I don't know whats going on. This might be a long shot, but I’m running iOS 11 beta 3 on my iPad, and Files is opening every iCloud-Drive-related folder in iBooks, which then offers to leave iBooks to open the link (see pic). Neither ‘Cancel’ nor ‘Open’ do anything.

I managed to temporarily remedy the issue by uninstalling iBooks, but reinstalling iBooks returns me to the same issue. I’d really not go through the downgrade->restore->update rigamarole if I don’t absolutely have to, so I’m hoping for a hotfix of some kind.

Any bright ideas, /sqt/?

Guys I might have messed up my entire desktop, is it actually possible to recover from this?
I've been using the LTS kernel on my arch installation since that I've first installed it.
Yesterday I decided to uninstall it and use the regular Linux kernel. I've seen some text with unprobing shit and stuff but I didn't pay that much attention to it.
Today I opened up my laptop to see that I don't have internet access anymore. I've created a profile with my wpa2 network, of which I am 100 percent sure is correct. Pinging gives the "Network is unreachable" error. When I don't use automatic netctl I can ping to outside IP's, but I can't connect to them on a browser. Obviously DNS also doesn't work anymore.
I've previously used NetworkManager but I removed that too yesterday. Also tethering with my phone shows up on ip link but I can't connect to the net (guessing you have to set that up manually on netctl too).
I'll be back later in the evening so I can't respond immediatly, but am I fucked? Do I have to reinstall Arch? Or is it still salvagable?

Everytime I start up my computer, after opening a program of any sort (firefox, games, etc.), my computer automatically switches focus from whatever I'm doing (window border goes grey to indicate it's not focused, vidya alt-tabs on its own) to seemingly nothing for a few moments, and the mouse pointer shows a brief loading icon beside it. Nothing else happens after that, and it only happens once or twice per boot.

What is it? Should I be worried?

My laptop shuts down randomly without showing a BSOD - it just freezes the frame and loops audio. About 10 seconds later the fans spin up to max and it has to be manually powered off. It's mostly when gaming but it's also inconsistent. Sometimes it can go for hours and sometimes it happens within minutes.

HWMonitor records temps as 74C for CPU and 71C for GPU literally as it crashed. Could it be thermal shutdown? surely it would throttle before that, in addition to the fact that max temps are somewhere in the 100C range?

Tested RAM with Memtest86, no errors. I'm thinking its between Windows being shitty and needing a complete reinstall, or thermals. I really don't want to open the case though to check, or worse, have to do thermal paste.

Which is more likely?

Hey /g/ I'm working on the final project for my OOP class. We have a class structure that goes: Pet-> Mammal -> Dog,Horse,ETC and Pet->Lizard,Turtle,ETC. In main we need to have some kind of container of pets that includes mammals and nonmammals, without them losing any of their unique member attributes. Is there an easy way to do this besides tuples? I tried just doing a pointer to an array of pets, but that casts everything as a Pet and they lose unique member attributes.

So I get this error everytime I try to run SoulSeek, which I never got when i tried this shit on windows 7.

I recently got windows 10 build 14393 and It's been doing me well so far past these errors that I've gotten.

I installed package KB3010081 which was supposed to have the necessary files needed to fix this problem, but it hasn't done anything that I've noticed.

I hear that KB3099229 is the package i'm actually looking for, but I cant install it because I already installed the previous one, and now Windows 10 won't let me uninstall that package :^)

Anyone got any ideas as to how I can solve this? Missing DLLs that are needed are MF.dll, EVR.dll, and MFPlat.DLL

That's pretty sad. I think you'll have to write something like this.
class Pet
{
virtual void eat();
};
class Mammal : public Pet
{ };
class Dog : public Mammal
{
public:
std::string bork = "woof";
};
class Turtle : public Pet
{
public:
int shell = 1;
};

int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
Pet *arr[] = {new Dog, new Turtle}
for (auto pet : arr)
{
if (Dog *dog = dynamic_cast<Dog*>(pet))
{
dog->bork;
}
else if (Turtle *turtle = dynamic_cast<Turtle*>(pet))
{
Turtle->shell;
}
}
}

This is a total abuse of OOP btw.

>>
>>61493777
Alright, thanks for that, I didn't know about dynamic_cast.
>>
>>61493825
It's a typesafe cast. If the Pet* can't safely be converted to an e.g. Dog*. it'll return a nullptr instead. That nullptr evaluates to false in the if condition, so it skips over the if block if the cast fails. But if the cast succeeds, then you can use the new Dog* within the if block to access Dog-specific members.

Swords are technology.

Why are they holding one-handed sword with two hands? They do not have shields?

And even if they are simply lacking shields - it is very uncomfortable to use one-handed sword like that. Just leave your other hand empty, or put some stick to it, I don't know.

No but something close to that. Buy low and sell high online. You can find all sorts of stuff for low prices both online and irl. Then just buy as much as you can and sell it online for regular or 10-20% discount and make bank.

Be warned though, you require good photographing/descriptive skills and a somewhat big capital in order to get started.

One example is black friday, get 20 phones worth $200 for $80 a piece, sell them a month later for $160, make ~$1,300 in profit after selling all 20.

Though again you need a somewhat big capital to get started, I recommend around $10,000 + at least 6 months worth of rent, bills, food money.

It won't be easy but once you get started and keep getting good ratings you'll slowly start making bank.

That depends on a number of factors such as:
Are you sure you want to risk never coming back to life and enjoying the few decades you still have left?

Are you okay with family members/friends feeling like shit for a long time and some killing themselves as well due to your decision to end yourself?

Have you done everything in your power to resolve the problems you currently have in life (therapy, moving away, getting another job/work for yourself)?

If you have answered yes to all 3 questions then yeah man, go ahead and tie that noose around your neck and fucking end it all man. You sick selfish fuck.

Sounds like a stupid idea to be honest, you are making your life worse for a very negligible gain.

Chances are something else in your laptop will break (or you will break it by accident) before the SSD wears out.

I installed my current GPU and my hard drive to the new motherboard, and I can't get it to boot. I gathered from google that I may need to re-install Windows to get this to work.

If I use a brand new hard drive ( I have a spare 1TB never used) and install Windows on it, can I get the computer to boot, or do I have to wipe my old hard drive and lose all my shit?

I feel so daft that I'm stuck on this but I don't want to fuck up. I have only replaced ram sticks and video cards before.

Your current install has drivers and was installed using your old hardware,it generates a key when it auths and now all your generated data is gone.
You can install on the new hdd fine and then load in to it and copy over your stuff.But you're going to have booting issues, so make sure you change your boot priority in the bios to the new drive.You're also going to have permission issuse with your new install.You can alleviate some of this using the same username,but you will have a bitch of a time restoring it within windows.What you can do is use a liveusb linux drive and boot in to ram and copy the old drive to the new one,since it cares not about windows permissions

Reinstalling windows is the most reliable solution, although you might have some luck booting it without the new GPU and letting windows try to repair itself.

If you do install from scratch, copying over your old shit should be pretty easy. You may need to give a drive letter to your old drive so you can see it from your new copy of windows.

No I get windows pretty well. That little paragraph there is over-complicating it. No normal user relies on their user key for anything practical, and ntfs permissions usually don't give a fuck when you're copying them over, as long as you're doing it from the new install. At most you'll just have to go into their properties and acquire ownership. If he just pops in the second drive after install he's got about a 50/50 chance of everything just working, otherwise just set the boot priority and add a drive letter in disk management and he's golden.

Well KDE is pretty much the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink build. It's comfy, it's not lite. xfce is medium-lite.

MPC doesn't work
MPV works but the soundfont is horrific

Should not happen at all.
Reinstall sound drivers.

Hey guys I have 3200 mhz RAM but it is only showing up at 1060 MHZ in speccy. How do I change it to run at 3200? I heard having higher MHz is better for Ryzen 5 1600.
>>
>>61499226
Turn on XMP.
1060MHz means its working at 2120MHz right now.
>>
>>61499249
Do I do that in the BIOS?
>>
>>61499206
Well I installed Realtek drivers and it works now. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. Thanks.
>>
>>61499283
Disable windows driver update, it breaks stuff often.

I thought you couldn't disable that on 10

Raspberry Pi 3

Windows Updates? Not on all versions.
But driver updates yes.
>>
>>61499322
Will that handle 1080p and 5.1dts/dolby?
>>
>>61499136
Try cytu dot be. You can make a new channel and up the stuff to one of the supported sites, like gdrive.

Fuck you moot, it isn't spam. I'm answering a leggitimate question!
>>
>>61499332
>1080p
It should no problem.
>5.1dts/dolby
Hmm, not sure. I'm wanting to say yes, but I actually have no experience connecting external sound systems to the Pi. There are various upgrades to the Pi, but that sort of makes it less "budget".
>>
>>61499377
I mean, not like destitute "budget" but preferably less than $80USD. I've looked into the pi but I think the audio has issues since it's a proprietary codec
>>
>>61499407
Yeah, it might need something like the Hi-Fi Berry to do more than just the audio over HDMI (which is fine). My bad, anon.
>>
I'm running Firefox ESR under Void Linux and the rendering of resized pictures is fucking ass. This hadn't happened to me under Debian.

Do you think using the main release of Firefox or Nightly will fix this issue? I'd rather not, though.

is there any new modern way to learn java or should i just seek out recommendations from old posts
>>
>>61499260
Yes, XMP settings are in BIOS.
>>
>>61499711
Okay I did that now I just get a black screen and the lights for cpu/RAM not being detected are on. How can I reset the BIOS? I have a msi b350 tomahawk.
>>
>>61499769
MSI usually has a CMOS reset button.
Or just remove and put the battery on again.

Don't you need a jumper cap? I don't think it came with one.
>>
>>61499684
I don't know if there is a modern way but java 7 & 8 have added some new stuff since java 6 which is what most of the old material will cover. If you can't find anything new just skimming over the new stuff and trying to incorporate it occasionably should be sufficient.
>>
>>61499805
No, all you need to do is remove the battery in your motherboard and put it on again.
Also in the rear.
Apparently Tomahawk versions dont have it only mortar.
>>
>>61499805
The button battery near PCIe slots if you wonder which battery im talking about.
>>
>>61499814
>>61499826
Okay there is one on the back too? I wouldn't have done this if I had known this could happen.
>>
>>61499842
Its not rare, it means your motherboard doesnt support 3400MHz RAM (welcome to Ryzen) and you overdid it, reset CMOS and use a slower speed.

Its not scary, its not hard, just annoying to deal with and you have to do it often when you OC something.
>>
>>61499876
Okay thanks anon. Is it safe to remove the battery on the front first? I just don't want to unscrew everything if there isn't a battery on back.
>>
>>61499893
There is no battery on the back, what are you talking about?

The CMOS/BIOS battery is in the front.
>>
>>61499905
>>61499893
Also this will reset your BIOS settings to default.
And your motherboard supports up to 3200MHz (and barely) so no 3400MHz, this is why its failing to boot.
>>
>>61499905
Oh did you mean the jumper is in the rear? Cause I do have a CMOS on my motherboard just no jumper unless it is in the back?
>>

>>61499927
This is all you have to do.
Remove this, put in again, battery will return to their default values.
IIRC MSI does it too when the motherboard fails to start 5 times, not sure if this is still a thing with ryzen motherboards.
>>
>>61499949
So if I just turn it off and on 5 times it might restart? Otherwise thanks I will remove the battery.
>>
>>61499949
>battery will return to their default values.
BIOS will return to their default values*
Aka returning your RAM speed to 2133MHz.

>>61499968
Yes, after 5 failed POSTs it will reset, so turn it on and let it turn on and off by itself.
>>
>>61500000
Okay I did that but it never turnes off it just stayed on.
>>
>>61500000
Fuck i got it by accident.

>>61500023
Dont turn it off, let it to restart itself.
Just remove the battery at this point.
>>

Yes, 5-10 seconds should be enough.
>>
>>61500154
Thank you so much anon. It is working now. I was scared as fuck I ruined my motherboard or something.
>>
>>61500277
Nah, its basic overclocking.
Most motherboards have a button to reset them tho.
Try a slower speed, while your RAM works at 3400MHz with no problem your motherboard doesnt because Ryzen memory controller sucks.
Try 3000MHz first then 3200MHz.
>>
>>61499376
Thank you, my dude.
>>
>>61500297
How much mhz should Ryzen run at? Or is the reason Ryzen needs higher mhz ram because it gimps the frequency?
>>
>>61500440
I mean how much mhz should RAM run at for Ryzen sorry.
>>
>>61500450
Whatever your motherboard supports, you will notice better perfomance at faster speeds so run it at whatever speed your motherboard supports.
In this case 3000-3200MHz.
Check your timings tho, the second CR turns into 2T you need to decrease it (Use Speccy or CPU-z SPD section).
>>
>>61500504
Speccy is showing CR at 2T already. This is on the default 1067mhz. I wasn't really considering overclocking when buying my parts I just thought there was a mistake since the mhz was so low. I guess not though.
>>
>>61500539
Whatever speccy shows your actual speed will be the double of it.
Example your RAM is running at 2134MHz right now.
>2T already
After checking google apparently AMD defaults it to 2T to archive faster speeds with no problem so just OC little by little without care till your build is unstable, then reduce to the last stable configuration.
>>
>>61500591
Okay. Thanks again anon for your help.
>>
>>61496590
Perhaps, but if you have a laptop with non removable PCIe-based onboard SSD storage like the MacBook Pro you don't want it ever to fail because it's not easy or cheap to replace.
>>
Whats the difference between barracuda and barracuda pro HDDs? I can't really see a difference looking at the specs.
>>

Unlike WD Blue and WD Black its just placeboo, they are the same but "certified".
Avoid Seagate HDDs.

alright i got one,

after the latest windows 10 update i finally turned my tablet on again. the browsers were apparently dropped in molasses.

anyone have any ideas what's going on here? doesnt' seem to matter what browser i use.

Any other reasons why should I still keep my Windows boot?
I only use it for MS Office since I don't own a printer and the layout messes up when I use LibreOffice and transfer it to an MS Office user, and Adobe software because again, taking home school projects will conflict with Photoshop on GIMP.
>>
Can I run Windows 7 on a i5 6700k? I've read about scripts that disable the incompatible hardware warning. Using a dedicated graphics card in the build, if that makes a difference.
