Just realized the ground on my sub amp has come loose. I could smell burning as I was driving and checked my trunk as soon as I could.

How should I go about reconnecting it? Is it safe to do it while the amp is still connected to the battery? Is it unsafe to disconnect the power while ungrounded?

Pull out a multimeter and check if the sub shorted, but turn the car off when you connect all the connections back together.

Disconnect your car battery. Then work on it dipshit. Still exercise caution. Those things can store quite a lot of residual energy.
