If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

Help me /g/
I have preordered a gtx 1060 from amazon however I have no idea when it will be in stock, it might be next month, maybe in 3 months, maybe in 1 year.
There is a used very good condition GPU (only some cosmetic wear) with 30 days return, I am thinking of getting it and returning it on 25th day and re-preorder a new one, but I am afraid that they will restock the GPUs before I return the used one resulting in price spiking and me being unable to buy one.

does OCing a 1600 void its warranty? I'd assume so but the disclaimer you get when launching ryzen master doesn't say it directly.
>>
>>61488364
i'd guess any 30-40$ cooler would handle it nicely, but that's not the problem. you pretty much have to win the silicon lottery to get r5 1600 OC to 4.0 without crazy voltage and you'd need good enough VRMs on your motherboard to not fry it.

Looking to start a new build in the new few months. As someone with no interest in streaming what would the benifits be of a Ryzen over a similarly priced i5/i7? Is it just a meme?

Streaming is real-time video-encoding, video encoding scales from a fuckton amount of cores
The benefits in your case would be your CPU not shitting the bed while playing CPU intensives games & streaming at the same time

Hi, is worth today to use ssd as primary drive, for system and games? im worried about lifespan, like it will last 2 years or less.
can someone provide me a nice guide trough ssds?
Cheers!
>>
>>61490201
While in 2012 and 2013 you'd actually compare between the SSDs, like MLC and SLC and other stuff.
But today, eh, every single one is pretty much the same. I can recommend Samsung stuff, my 830 series SSD has worked since 2012 and it's still my primary drive for the OS and maybe one or two games.
>>
So looking at getting a 144hz monitor, one is on sale. I currently have a i5 4670K and a GTX 760. Is this enough to run it? It would mainly be for csgo, but some other games as well. Nothing very new, most games I play are at least a few years old.

1080p@144hz on a 760? if you drop settings to medium and truly play nothing too new (read: basically nothing released after 2014) you should be ok

just built my first last night /g/, only issue I've run into is the temp of my CPU; it's way high.

I turned off the auto overclock which helped a little but it still ranges between 70 and 98 degrees C. I'm just using the stock intel cooler with very old thermal paste, would replacing the cooler help, or could it be something worse?
>>
>>61490579
yes, replace cooler and thermal paste

noob here. Just put together my first pc and it boots up but then i run into a problem. My monitor acknowledges it is plugged into the computer but when i boot it up nothing appears. just a black screen. hyelp.
>>

does your CPU have graphics integrated into it? if no, are you plugging the monitor into your GPU and not your motherboard?
>>
>>61490773
Do you currently have it plugged into a video card? Try plugging directly into the motherboard. If it works update video drivers and make sure it is set as your default display in bios.

point is to make a small, silent PC to be used for a Linux Debian

please critique my build
>>
>>61491853
first, coolermaster are shit at everything. get a superflower, seasonic or even evga psu as opposed to those.
second, make sure the mobo is compatible. some 100 chipset mobos can run kabylakes but it must be stated (ASRock's H110M R3.0 can run them, the key is the R3.0) otherwise it wont match
third, the RAM is for laptops. get normal RAM and you're good
>>
>>61492118
>coolermaster are shit at everything
Rude.

>>61491853
But yes, get a EVGA, Seasonic or Silverstone PSU instead.
>>
>>61491853
Looks Ok but are you sure that the mainboard needs notebook ram modules? Also a new Intel cpu needs an up to date bios on a 110 chipset, not guaranteed to come with that from the factory.

>>
>>61492141

Actually I think I goofed... the motherboard won't support that CPU... also the RAM is wrong...

maybe I could buy another cpu ... what do you recommend? I will run 5 or 6 tasks at the same time but they're not very cpu intensive

>>
>>61492275
Let's stay focused guys
>>
>>61492275
4cores and 4threads really makes them not optimal nowadays when a game with nothing else on gets pretty taxing on the CPU (think 80% usage), and when you consider most gaymers will use voip or something else in the bg it gets pretty bad for i5s
and then you have people who do productivity tasks with their PCs and the ryzens completely shit down intel's throats as if it were a street in that regard.

What are you planning on using the system for?

If games, you could make the case for the i5, for anything else just go Ryzen. As much as the Ryzen shills would like you to believe otherwise, it isn't as good in most games as an i5/i7.

>inb4 people posting graphs where the i7 does 300fps and ryzen 200fps and people saying 'DURR DO YOU REALLY NEED 300FPS THOUGH???', or posting cherrypicked examples of games released in the last 6 months where Ryzen is equal to Intel.

Got you covered
Just discovered it myself today, pretty useful
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/62vp2g/clearing_up_any_samsung_bdie_confusion_eg_on/
But Samsung B-die isnt too important anymore
My Hynix M-die single rank runs out of the box at 3200Mhz by just turning on XMP
But I'm running at 2933Mhz because the increased SOC voltage required for 3200 increases power consumption by quite a bit

Samsung B-die dual rank would be best, but don't spend too much on RAM

- A single high-end graphics card can run most games at 60FPS on a 4K monitor. Currently a 1080Ti on 4K can easily get over 30FPS on most games with the highest settings, but it would take two of them to top 60FPS.
- New games having 4K support at release becomes common (unless it already is).

It's been many years since I've built a gaming rig, I'm still on Sandy Bridge.

Suppose I were to build one now. Would these parts be a good choice?

CPU: i7-7700K
RAM: 2x4GB dual channel 2400MHz DDR4
Motherboard: micro-ATX, cheapest one with Z270 chipset and all the features I need
Graphics card: GTX 1080Ti non-reference (cheapest Gigabyte model with 3 fans)
PSU: 650W full-modular 80+ gold PSU
Case: probably a Corsair micro-ATX, I've had no problems with them in the past
CPU cooler: AIO water cooler (probably Corsair again)
Case fans: Noctua ugly brown colour all the way!
Storage: M.2 NVMe SSD for OS, 2.5" SSD for everything else
4K Monitor: TN 1ms (faster response times) 28" DisplayPort 1.4 support and I don't know what other specs are important with monitors!

I'm not interested in having more than one graphics card, which is why I will probably wait for better ones in the future.

Your SSD doesn't have RAM.
Pick up one that does.
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/RzfmP6/pny-internal-hard-drive-ssd7cs1311120rb
You can pick up a single stick of 8GB RAM (that is faster than 2400) and upgrade to another identical stick later for 16GB. 16GB and dual channel isn't needed if you want to shave something off.
You can always go lower on the case, but that's really your preference. You certainly don't need a mid-tower. I'd recommend this as a cheap, solid mATX, but cases can be subjective.

It might have higher temps when located there and could lower the life of the SSD.

Are case fans a meme or should consider investing in some quality fans. Someone gave me a H440 (v2) which has a bit more ventilation and a fan hub but the hub only supports 3 pin. I heard that the stock fans are noisy, anything would be an upgrade.
I also haven't built a PC in over half a decade, so I'm behind on optimal fan placement.

Okay now I'm home I cana actually do this properly. First of all why are you posting an imgur link on an image board? You can just upload it or even better, read the sticky and do it with pcpp.
The H110 motherboard is okay but Intel Kaby Lake CPUs need a bios update and for the bios update you need an older Intel cpu.
Because of my neighourly love I did it for you with updated parts. Don't look for at the cost too much because pcpp doesn't seem to deal with french shops (assuming you even are from France and not somewhere in Africe or Canada lol) that well, most things don't even have a price. Especially the PSU is really expensive, but it's fully modular at least.

Hello! I'm currently using a budget pc and I seem to run Overwatch at a pretty shitty fps; It flows between 15/20-40fps. I'm thinking of getting an upgrade, but I can only afford to upgrade one part, so I need your guys' help to decide which is more important in this case and which I should get earlier, and maybe a cheaper option for what I'm going for.

My processor is an AMD A6-6400K which is a dual core and it sucks
My graphics card is a GTX 650 2gb.

For the cpu I think I might be going for an Intel Core i5 7600K, and for my graphics card I think I'm going for a GTX 1060 3gb. Which should I upgrade to ensure I get at least a smooth 30fps experience on overwatch, and are there any cheaper alternatives that are just as good, or even better?

Is spending an extra ten bucks to get 3200 RAM as opposed to 3000 RAM worth it if you're using Ryzen?
>>
>>61492456
recomending an i5 in this day and age even for gaming is cruel. might as well tell them to just buy 4gb of ram for gaming while you're at it.

and this notion that "ryzen isn't good for gaming" is the biggest case of fake news, slander, and lies out there. going out there and putting "ryzen, no good gaming" is putting thoughts into people's head that ryzen can't play any game out there at max setttings and get 100fps. but rather ryzen can only get 15 fps at max settings. you fuckwits are just that, fuckwits.

I'm on a 7 years old Samsung BX2450, it has a 2 ms refresh rate but guess what...the monitor has to be set on super fast mode which generates blue/green ghosts and it is unusable, but apart from that I'm ok with this since I don't use this mode, and I have no ghosting at all, it's a nice monitor but I can't cope anymore with the viewing angle, I want an IPS panel for every purpose.

The U2515H and the U2518D are sold for 460€ (insured shipping included) and the first one can be found from 320 to 400€ on other shops.

Again learn to read. There's a reason I asked the guys usage scenario. If he was building a system only to play older single-threaded titles recommending Ryzen would be retarded, if he is doing productivity work then an i5 would be retarded. Pretty boring arguing with Ryzen shills, it's always the same thing.

You linked to a benchmark which shows the Intel platform consistently outperforming the AMD one. If someone was gaming, and gaming alone, obviously it would make sense to buy Intel.

not sure if you can still upgrade to 10 from 7 or 8 but if you can, and you have a disc for either of those, just install that then do the upgrade process in windows.

if not, you can get an untouched/unedited ISO from microsoft, install that either by burning a disc or using a USB stick and a program to make the USB bootable and install windows.

then you just get KMSpico or MStoolkit to activate. but i've heard you dont even have to activate it if you're fine with a blank background and a message once in a while, you still get updates and can use it.

make sure you get the activator program from MDL forum or at least crosscheck the hash of the shit you downloaded with the one they list on MDL forum to make sure you're not installing a rootkit
