Most Physicists still use it for simulations if they need to be fast and python for everything else.
Fortran is a surprisingly nice language now and easy to pick up. String manipulation is very poor, however, and format statements for formatted printing are archaic. If you need a fast language for numerical work it is a very good option. Just be aware if you come to it from eg C that when iterating through a 2+ dimensional array you ought to address j first then i (assuming array(i,j) ) as the memory is laid out differently from C. Speaking of memory, pointers are a bit weird in Fortran but you very rarely need them anyway
