It's because there are too many Android phones. iOS devs can compile their apps to be optimized for the iPhone architecture, but Android devs just do a one-size-fits-all app that can't take advantage of the hardware. So in order to get a decent experience with Android, you can't simply get an Android phone with the same specs as an iPhone, you need a phone with more powerful specs than an iPhone. And even then the apps will still have subtle differences, like lag and screen tearing. Because it's not optimized. Too many phones, how are Android devs supposed to optimize their apps?

You want to be cool and hip, don't you?

Legitimate computer science and enterprise functionality cares about solutions to problems. For every javascript starbucks lifestyle blogger, there is a team of PhD's that need raw power and functionality for their solutions.

People forget that android came out buggy as shit initially, and that really hurt it's perception in the media. Plus, Apple had cultural appeal with the IPod and ITunes. It shouldn't have to be said, but music runs the pop-culture zeitgeist. When the pop musicians do something, it catches on faster than if a comedian or an actor did the same. Had android come out looking slightly better and ran just as well, maybe more musicians would have used it, and the qt's would latch on.
