This is what people really don't get.

The second generation of consumer VR is probably going to be a game-changer, because it's going to improve upon the biggest issues found during the first gen.

If the second generation of desktop VR doesn't go fully wireless, I can't imagine myself adopting desktop VR. Currently rocking a GearVR with a Galaxy S8 and it's a pretty sweet, fully wireless VR experience.

I think if Valve can make the HTC Vive wireless (and we know they can; wireless expansion tech has already been developed and implemented with as little as 1ms latency), they'll easily win the second-gen VR console war.

Because:

1. It's pointless. Realism isn't what makes a game attractive. Entertainment factor does. A game can be cartoony and silly with funny music and do better than the most advanced simulations.

2. It's expensive. The reason why the whole "console vs pc" argument ever even existed was because the majority of gamers are children who's parents don't want to fork out a wad of cash for a gaymen pc.

You really think these parents are going to fork out not only that but an additional $800+ for a shitty pair of goggles?

3. It's inconvenient. Nobody wants to have a backpack strapped to their face, no matter what they say. It's for this reason that even augmented reality will NEVER take off either.

VR/AR will continue to fail until we get full blown holodeck technology which will won't get, because we don't need it and more money can be made from other things.

Cost is a large factor but not be all end all, console is easier to grasp especially for children that were raised on abundantly cheap smartphones and tablets and want to play with their friends.
You just pop a CD in and play or use the store which would be similar to what they are accustomed to on android. Hassle free with Little to no troubleshooting involved.

Back in the 90s plenty of households had a desktop with windows, embedded systems for general purpose computing with online connectivity weren't powerful nor cheap enough nor abundant enough for mass adoption as they are nowadays. Most kids started with consoles back then as well but they had to learn how to use a PC so they were at least familiar with the platform.
By the time they have enough disposable income to get into PC gaming most would have grown out of the hobby.

VR gets attention about once every 9 years or so. This last round was pretty good but too expensive. I'd bet money that Nintendo does a fantastic VR thing 8 years from now like they did motion control with the Wii then it will be in every home and replace monitors and TV. But a company has to make it great, comfortable, and cheap. I can only see them do that.

VR is shit. Use it for more than 2 hours and you'll never use it again.

VR is used in industry fine. I guess the expense is what is keeping it from the individual.
I work with a VR training system for my industry and it is such a valuable tool we are buying another full system; airframe, computers, ios station, headsets, etc.

But for personal use its going to need the innovation that omly comes when industry demands it and pushes the price lower.

I buy one when it's more than just a toy.
