Its a good deal right? im trying to ask for the type serial but the guy keeps avoiding it, good thing the site i will buy it through lets me fuck over the guy if he doesn't tell me before sending it.

Alright lads, I am very new to Thinkpads, let me just clear something up, (I am an idiot). I have a large budget right now because I am currently neet status, and I have been looking at a super beefin P71. Is it too overkill though? I dont mind paying 4000 dollars if it is reliable and powerful, and I feel like it is very future proof. I will probably only be using it for CS/Krita, Flash/Toonboom, and some very mild gaymen. Would you call this a stupid purchase for what I need?
>>
>>61483202
>Would you call this a stupid purchase for what I need?

yep, you do not want or need a quadro gpu or xeon cpu, they are worse than i7/geforce gpu for what you're using it for

and 17" laptops are ridiculous, it weighs almost 8 lbs and it has a huge power brick to go with it, if you want or need mobility in the future you will want to buy something else
>>

t470 would be better purchase? Thanks man, and yeah. I have a bit of the dumbs when it comes to this stuff.
>>
>>61483535
Well for me it would be a better buy.

Sure, a maxxed p71 is really powerful but IMO it doesn't make sense as a laptop. Thing is massive and huge.

The t470 has good specs and is portable.

If you really need performance you should have a workstation
>>
for <500 is there a better option than a t430 with i7, 5200m? I'm seriously asking

I'd personally just buy the casing for it; you can usually find one pretty cheap on eBay or maybe even Amazon. Failing that, buy a bricked one and tear that apart.

I have a T400 with a P8400 and the HD3470.

Throw 8GB of RAM and an SSD in it and it'll perform as good or better than modern laptops in 99.9r% of applications. Supports Libreboot as well if that's your jam (although you'll lose access to the dedicated AMD GPU if yours has one and you'll be stuck with the integrated Intel trash).

If all you do is play games all day than yeah you're a degenerate, but it's nice having the ability to get some gaming in while not having to compromise on your notebook selection.

This man speaks the truth.

In the suggestions I noticed this one, for example, a much better deal:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T430-FAST-LAPTOP-i5-3320M-2-6GHZ-8GB-160GB-SSD-DVDRW-14-win-7/282548447911

Ah I see, there were heaps of T430 going for cheaper, I guess the i7 doesnt matter
>>
>>61486425
Not really. Unless it's a really good deal. I bought my T430 (i7 and Nvidia) for ~300€. More than that would be too much.
I also bought a T420 (i5, integrated graphics) for my wife, and it runs really well.

I'm looking to get a cheap ass laptop for some casual web browsing and media watching in bed and when I travel. I already have a powerful desktop for all my power usage needs.
Any recommendations on thinkpads or thinkpad like laptops?
My requirements are:
>1080p ips screen, or at least upgrade-able to one -easily-
>battery life can be bad, as long as I can get a solid 2 hours out of it
>easy to open up and get in 8gb of ram and an SSD
>able to plug into an HDMI television. IIRC mini-displayport can work with a simple converter cable
>at least Sandybridge or later. Preferably around Haswell but this is something I can compromise on.
>USB 3.0 is a huge plus
Budget is literally unlimited, but preferably cheaper than a brand new low-end laptop. I guess around $250 or so, not including the upgrade parts I'd want.

So far it's kind of looking like my best option is a X230. Newegg is selling a 2.6ghz one for $189, which would give me a little wiggle room so I can comfortably get a 250gb ssd instead of doing the disc drive swap method for running 2 drives. The only downside is that it looks like the screen upgrade is a bitch on the x230.
>>
Why is it so hard to find an X230 that anything other than i5-3320m? Isn't worth waiting around for something better to get listed or would it not be worth the extra cost?
>>
>>61487636
1080p IPS screens begin only on the universally reviled *40 series. X230 is able to accept a 2K mod but you'll have to get a converter board from the chinks at 51nb.
>>
>>61483014
The main purpose was not for gaming. It was just a nice surprise that it could handle it.

>>
>>61482314
X131e, is it any good? I've got a deal for 120-ish USD

Specs:

Intel Celeron
4GB RAM
1TB HDD
11.5inches screen

SHOULD I BITE? I want to, just because of the HDD (I can shove a 512GB in and use the 1TB as external)
>>
>>61488111
Not sure about the x220's so much yet, I know my x201 only ever would heat up to 50°C, so your claim to 70°C+ is certainly not a good temp. I have yet to test the x201 or the x200 with the new paste but I assume it'll be better given the condition of the OEM paste…

Also, if a Thinkpad fan forum gave you advice on a new fan, they're probably right. The threads I've found and followed have yet to steer me wrong. Give it a try if it'a not too expensive, why not? Better than drilling holes in your chassis.
>>
I'm going to have to buy a laptop for programming and shit. I also want to play a few old games on it for when I have free time. Hello my beloved fa/g/s, I’m in need of your advice.

I have an x201, and I’m absolutely in love with the little bastard, but unfortunately, because of work I need a machine that can run windows with more ease, so I need to upgrade. I’m between an x230 or a T520, both i5 with ssd and 8gb of ram.

Which do you recommend? I will be running windows 7 pro on the new machine exclusively.

3-cell sits completely flush in the laptop, 6-cell is bulged out of the bottom, it tilts the laptop up a bit

i think it will be better than the current lineup of trash. the deal breaker for me will be no return of 7 row of keys as well as poor ultrabay function and poor expansion slots like the ExpressCard slot.

ideally id want hotswappeable ultrabay that can be bootable as well as full size m.2 slot thats PCIE based and bootable as well as an m.2 to msata adapter then a standard 2.5" bay and an ExpressCard slot. also 3cell internal battery that can be removed then option of 6c or 9c external battery and also a battery slice.

But sadly (with the way things are) lenovo isnt going to fabricate or make anything new for a niche market. they will just use whats already available from the t470
>>
>>61495815

As the two external screens accept VGA inputs, I thought pic related would be enough but it doesn't work. I can only duplicate source screen but not extend the desktop so I can enjoy having 3 distincts screens.

Is duplicating the VGA's signal a probem here? I've noticed the X220 also has a DisplayPorts. Should I use DP+VGA instead? If that's the case it sucks because the two external screens don't accept DisplayPort but only DVI...
>>
Hey, I'm gonna start CS soon and I need a laptop. I was thinking about this, but I don't know what model is the best option for me. I will be doing a lot of virtualization. I was looking for something like a 15 inch screen, i5-i7 (dual-quad core)... I don't need an SSD, but I need at least 1TB of space. What do you suggest? I have a budget of 600€ (I live in Spain so I need an special layout)

So should i get it?

What's a decent price for a used T460?
>i5 or i7
>1080p fullhd non-touch
>at least 8Gb RAM

What thinkpad? From what I've seen in this thread the x220 is awful at cooling without cutting your own breathing holes.
>>
How do I get a retro thinkpad? I'm poor but I know it's probably the last time I'll ever have the chance to get a good laptop. maybe it won't even fall in price used cause it's probably not gonna get picked up by all the megacorps that usually buy lenovo.
>>
Budget: £200
Location: UK
Size: Any
Performance: Programming, light rendering and classic games
Other: Want the thinkpad to VERY customizable (CPU, RAM, HDD, GPU)

Whenever they release it. Given the crowd appeal, it'll probably be limited but not nearly as limited as the 20th anniversary X1 or Reserve Edition

>>61504345
In its usual form, only 2 active displays at once are supported. But you can use the DP and VGA yes, just the laptop's screen will be off

As for that VGA thing, there's only 1 VGA signal so of course it's going to duplicate

I've got an x230i with the i3-3110M. Aside from putting in an SSD, is there much I can do about upgrading it? IPS panel?

ThinkPad T430 (i5, 6GB, 320GB) for $180. Looks pretty good but im concerned about two things.

Whats this round thing to the right of the trackpad? Is it just a reflection or a laptop part pushing towards the case?

And the second concern is pic related. What could've been the cause of this space between case parts above the usb ports? Easy fix?

Intel broadwell and skylake ULV series only I think.
>>

>But you can use the DP and VGA yes, just the laptop's screen will be off

Do you mean there's no way to have a 3 displays setup with a X220? Why is that? The Intel graphics card is too weak?

I was hoping that I could do 1 external VGA + 1 external DP, yet still use my laptop's screen.
>>
>>61506255
I tried this with my x201. Apparently the onboard graphics are just incapable of outputting to more than two diaplays. Even attempting to use the main display + the two extra outputs fails.
>>
>>61506255
yes the Intel HD 3000 can only do 2 monitors

why? you should use displayport over vga

The monitors I use at the office only take VGA or DVI. I had ordered a DisplayPort-to-DVI cable but meh.

Just got an absolutely cherry T420 for $100.
>i5-2520m

>brand new replace keyboard

Also bought 2x4GB ddr3-1333mhz so-dimm kit for $30

I currently have a T420 that's falling apart that I'll be swapping parts over. My i7, 1600x900 screen, etc. Did I done good?

Inexperienced newfag here looking for a decent laptop for Java class. I've been reading and the T430 looks like a popular choice around here so got any good suggestions?

I have T400 right here. Doing ok for everything except games.
Check for 1440x900 resolution (there is backlit models available). Also check the batteries and ask if alll screws are present and in place.
You will probably want to stay with windows as it seems to outperform linux. Trackpoint scrolling sucks though.
>>
>>61509489
you can change the way the trackpoint scrolls through some settings in their manager I think
but the only problem is then it can't be used as a middle click button. So to get around that I just used some script to tie left and right click simultaneously as a middle click
>>
>>61509213
ya a T430 would be plenty powerful enough, if you want something smaller then X230, if you want bigger then T530. All from the same generation and have about the same specs.

Also suggested (required) is getting an SSD and sticking it into whatever you end up with.
>>
allright, just bought a x220 for 90$, but theres a catch. It has no psu, so my question to you fellas is: could you recommend cheapest possible psu that will not explode or throttle the cpu ?

It's got a 1366 X 786 resolution and integrated graphics. I want to upgrade the screen to IPS. What resolution should I go for? Do you think 1920x1080 is out of the question without a dedicated gpu?
>tfw getting stressed out browsing the ebay-jew
>>
>>61505620
You could swap in an x220 keyboard if you wished. Upgrade RAM.
>>
>>61510489
T440 sucks. Go for t430 or t450/460 if you want something newer.
>>
>>61510745
Well, it's a t440p if that changes anything. I don't intend to use it for anything very intensive, just shitposting and watching movies maybe. What's so bad about it? Any higher up is financially hard to do for me.
>>
I've got a damaged W510. Screen flickers crazy, on-board DisplayPort not working, however theones on the docking station are working fine.
Any ideas how to check where is my W510 failing? The IPS panel just works fine with outer laptops.

you just press down hard on the plastic bit and the little tabs snap back into place. Worst case scenario, the palm rest and keyboard bezel are the cheapest parts to replace
