I have the unique opportunity to buy a 6700k or a 6850k for the same sub-$300 price (thanks to a sale at Microcenter, and a friend who bought a 6850k and ended up not using it). I'm building a completely new PC, with no carried over parts. Which is a better buy especially in the long term? It seems a little odd to get a 4c/8t CPU at this point, considering Intel's mainstream line is about to go 6c/12t. What do you think, /g/entoomen?

And no, I can not wait for Coffeelake. I have an urgent need.
>>
Depends what you are going to use the pc for. Go for the 6700k for gaming, Or get the 6850k if content creation is more your thing.
>>
>>61480713
>buying outdated overpriced hardware when ryzen exists

What are you doing dude?
>>
Take the 6850k. Sell it with profit. Buy ryzen.
It's that simple
>>
>>61480828
I don't really do much content creation. Isn't there some merit to the idea of buying a 6 core CPU for improved "future proofing", since games are getting better with multi-threading? I realize nothing is future proof, but I feel a little uneasy about buying a quad core when hex is about to become the norm.
>>
6850K, definitely.
>>
>>61480941
>>61480986
The 6700k offers much better single core performance than any of the Ryzen chips, and the 6850k has the full monty of HEDT features. I don't see much reason to invest in Ryzen when I have these other options available.
>>
>>61481062

If you want to (arguably) future proof with more cores get a ryzen, otherwise 6700k I guess
>>
>>61481111
>much
Yeah. 10% for 100% more money. But sure, it is your money, go ahead.

Also look into newest intel discovery about faulty hyper threading feature. But you are probably just fanboy.
>the fps increase is only measurable when low resolutions and we still are talking about 300fps beyond any monitor capable of actually using

Few months ago amd was dead. Now it is intel who will die unless drop prices like crazy. At least just look into amd before you git the BUY button.
>>
>>61481170
Why would you encourage this man to be a faggot?
>>
>>61480713
I've built plenty of systems with both and I would go for the 6850k from a pure power perspective.

You will spend more on a mobo and cooling if you go with the 6850k, so consider that as well.
>>
>>61480713
6850k, not even a question.
>>
>>61481184
>Yeah. 10% for 100% more money. But sure, it is your money, go ahead.

Did you read the OP? I'm able to aquire either of these chips for less than $300 (~$240 for the 6700k). Ryzen isn't the lower cost option in this particular situation.

>You will spend more on a mobo and cooling if you go with the 6850k, so consider that as well.

Valid point, I hadn't thought about thermal differences.
>>
>>61481366
You can cool a 6700k on a 212 evo. But if you were going to get something like an 280mm AIO anyways then it doesn't really matter.

Good z170's I believe still cost ~130. The x99's might be a bit higher.
>>
>>61481366
Ok, enjoy. I tried.
>dont forget to look at TDP. These watts will cost you and hot cpu = throttling.

I was thinking of a Noctua U14.

>Good z170's I believe still cost ~130. The x99's might be a bit higher.
X99s are still around $200-$250, unfortunately.

>>61481438
I appreciate your input. I hope my previous reply didn't come across as combative/snarky, I didn't mean it that way.
>>
>>61481590
>Noctua U14

Not familiar with how good that one is. I mostly do custom loops for the aesthetics, but noctua is always an excellent decision!

Either way, I think you'll be happy with your build.
>>
>>61481590
I have a Noctua NH-U14S with 1 fan. My 6700k at 4.7 maxes out at 73 degrees under a typical load (x264 encoding), and 85 in prime95. Very nice cooler, and very quiet.
>>
Any other opinions on this?
>>
>>61484928
My opinion is that your a retard if you're buying that Intel when you can get Ryzen.
>>
>>61481201
>Please PLEASE don't buy Ryzen, goyim
>PLEASE
Jesus christ pajeet, it's over already.
Ryzen won normies and tech youtubers, Intel is for liquid nitrogen freakazoids
>>
>>61484983
>>61485004
OP said he can get a 6700k or a 6850k for around the price of a 1600x. The main draw of Ryzen is that its a better value; more cores for less money. Since that's not the case here, why the fuck would he buy a Ryzen CPU.

The 6850K is by far the better deal. You won't notice a goddamn difference in gaming and it's far better for everything else. The 6700K doesn't even have MUH 5 GIGERHURRZ going for it like the 7700K.
>>
>>61485920
1600x has more cores than the 6700k or the 6850k.
>>
It's a good price, but it's a good price for a part that's overpriced to begin with.

You won't regret not getting a Ryzen, but you'll probably think that you should have gotten a Ryzen instead.
>>
>>61481184
You even bringing up the HT bug demonstrates you have no real knowledge on the subject and your opinion should be vigorously discarded.
>>
>>61486033
It also doesn't run at 90 degrees Celsius while using a 240mm AiO cooler.
>>
>>61487422
>6 core has more cores than a 6 core
Really makes you think
>>
1700x is at 265$ on US amazon

Just sayin'
