If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

Planning on placing an order for my gtx 1070 this friday or saturday because I'm an impatient spaz. How long do they take to arrive through express shipping on newegg to >a fucking leaf?
>>
Is the 1060 6 gb worth the extra cash performance/price wise compared to the 3gb version ?
>>
>>61467693
I was sick of waiting, a 1050TI didn't seem too future proof at all (single fan EVGA units being 160$+), and the 1060 3GB cards dont preform all that much better at $240. 6GB 1060s are 399+.

I bought a Sapphire RX 580 4GB in a package deal that came with some kind of garbage fitness tracker that doesnt even have a clock on it for $270USD. Should be arriving tomorrow assuming fedex gets their shit in gear.
>>
>>61468030
The 3GB version is worthless. If you're aiming for the 3GB model... get an RX 570 instead. The extra 1GB vram is worth it.
>>
>>61468094
Hes comparing 3GBs and 6GB 1060s as ts impossible to get a 570/580 unless you do some meme wombo combo on newegg
>>
>>61468129
the 3GB is still worthless. Either get an 1050Ti or skip straight to the 6GB 1060.
It baffles me how the 1050Ti has 4 GB and the nest GPU in nvidias line up has 3GB. like wtf.
>>
>>61467986
Anyone? My goal is to play 1080p 60fps for as long as possible and I think a gtx 1060 might not last nearly as long as the 1070 will. I want to be able to upgrade by simply switching the CPU and not the GPU in the future

I posted this last thread but it 404'd before anyone could answer it. Any help?

I have a i7-7700 (non-K). It idles at 39-40 degrees @ 28-29 degrees ambient temperature. Loading with normal programs it pushes it to around 71 degrees while prime95 small fft pushes it to a whooping 91 degrees. I have a 212 LED installed. Is this normal temperatures or did I fuck it up the installation of my CPU cooler somewhere.

>>

You can actually game on Ryzen chips, just not 144hz.
>>
>>61469057
If your cpu holds your gpu back enough to not get 100+ hz ratings in games now, it might struggle in the future with 60hz.

People should buy the strongest cpu for the purpose they are going to use it for.

This whole 'It doesn't matter because you don't need more than 60 hz' is going to come back and bite you in the ass a few years down the road or if you decide to do a gpu upgrade
>>
>>61468994
Make sure your fans are doing their job? If that doesn't work, clean off and reapply thermal paste.
If that doesn't work buy a liquid cooler. I recommend CoolerMaster's MasterLiquid series or if you still want air cooling, Noctua fans work a treat.
>>
>>61469091
I think a liquid cooler is overkill for a non-k processor considering that these things ship with the stock cooler and Intel expects you to use them.

Yeah my fans are doing their job. Apparently searching on the internet tells me the newer versions of prime95 loads up an unreasonable amount of heat and voltage to current gen i7s. I am going to go back and retest again but this time with prime95 2.6 / Aida64 and other programs.

I really don't want to have to clean off and reapply thermal paste cause I used the satchel that came with my cooler and I don't have spare paste lying around to change it with (inb4 mayo).

OP mentions only 7700k because i3 and i5 cpus are dead and not worth buying in any case.
i3s were killed by intel itself when they added hyperthreading to pentiums.
i5s are outperformed by ryzen 5 and the fact that you can get 6c/12t for the same price as 4c/4t makes them obsolete.

you're pulling shit out of your ass. in 3-4 years ryzen might as well pull ahead due to more cores.
not to mention AM4 will still be around in 2020, so you will be able to easily get better zen cpu, when coffee lake will already require new motherboards. so if you bought kaby lake SIX months ago you're already fucked.

I had one, sold it really high (800) on Ebay during the recent mining craze. It's 1070 tier performance, and crossfire scales pretty well. The card never runs over 60°C, which is bretty good considering it is made out of two R9 290Xs... oh and it needs a really powerfull psu, as the card runs at 500w. I had an Akasa venom 850w gold psu.

Wrong
Games need multiple cores now
Modern games will glitch out like crazy on single core CPUs and many won't even start on anything below 4 threads
And there are already plenty of games using 6 or more threads
>>
>>61469148
>In 3-4 years it will be the difference between 40 and 60fps.
More like 40 vs 48 in unoptimized corelet games
Learn to math
>>
>>61470067
absolutely terrible colors, no adaptive sync, uses led pwm dimming which ruins motion clarity. people recommend it because it was quite popular few years ago, but many better monitors came out since then.
>250$
that's overpriced as fuck for what this monitor offers. ViewSonic XG2401 is a MUCH better deal.
>>
>>61469696
Really good performance when crossfire is supported
Good enough for 1440p or lower when it isn't
High power draw, so make sure to have a strong PSU
>>
>>61470073
see >>61470097
>>
>>61470067
If you spend $600 on a GPU you should spend at least as much money on a monitor.

Doesn't matter what GPU you have if you play on a 24" 1080p TN monitor. It's still going to look shit.
>>
>>61470073
Because i7s do not improve gaming by more than 2fps and cost way more. They're meant for very CPU intensive tasks like video editing
>>
>>61470167

>>
Quick question.
Right before i got my second monitor my first one started to flicker.
Like twice an hour it just randomly flickers.
It flickers the color that's displayed rn on the monitor.
When I connected my second monitor it started to flicker too so i'm like 99% sure its my gpu (that's like 3-4 years old).
Will that damage the monitors in any kind of way?

Where can I buy sweet purple desktop case for my specs?
>>
I really need to cut down compile (gcc) times because my project has grown so much. I've just been using a simple i5 desktop as I bought it before this was a problem. Should I go with used workstations(xeon) from ebay or maybe a ryzen 7?
I can also wait for threadripper. No skylake-x as my living room is already way too fucking hot as it is.
I assume a r7 1700 would be many times faster than my i5 for compiling right? Would that continue to scale with say the 16 core threadripper?
Also is ITX an option for AMD yet? I don't need more than a tiny GPU, i'll probably just throw a 560 or 1050 in it, so I don't see much a reason to go mid tower or bigger.
Thanks /g/uys

570 at msrp is the best value. If possible try to get one of those. 1050 is the best card cheaper than the 570 unless you get a cheap freesync monitor(you should) in which case the 560 is nice. Pretty important to OC the 1050/560 well.
1060 6gb 9gbps/580 are also good choices if you want to spend a bit more. PIck between them based on the games you play. The 580 is superior but in my most played game the 1060 6 does better.

I have a 1000w modular psu that is fairly new, and I want to use it in a new build. I know it is overkill, but it is free.

Would a 200mm psu fit inside a Termaltake Core V1 case? Some websites say a max of 160mm, others are saying a max of 200mm. Looking at pictures online it seems like there should be more than enough space.

Video games are really just a secondary consideration here. I'm just throwing in the 1080ti and 144hz monitor as an after thought. I'm upgrading for the 16 threads for improved compile times.
I like the case, the mesh right next to the gpu fans should let it breathe. It can support the 120mm AIO just fine. RAM looks like a good deal.

Yes, but I would recommend getting something Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge based. Even an old i5 2500 performs better than the G4560 does.

And it depends on how low your budget is, you can get used workstations with Xeon 4 or 6 cores that perform similarly to the Ryzen 1500X and 1600 at like $400 bucks and just put a GPU in it. Just make sure that the PSU is large enough for a GPU more powerful than the GT1030 if you're going to buy a full system used.

It's not that simple.
Bf1 for instance, top performance requires 6+ real cores at high frequency for constant 144hz. On my 7700k 5ghz it almost tops all times. This is due 60hz server tick.

Ryzen just don't cut for bf1, obviously frewency still play a major role. Ironically the best CPU for bf1 is broadwell e high oc.

Want to update a few parts:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CzLGtJ

currently have:

case: Fractal Design r5
gpu: Asus RX480 8GB Strix
cooler: be quiet dark rock 3
psu: be quiet 500W Pure Power 10 CM Modular
drive1: older Crucial 120gb ssd
drive2: Samsung evo 850 512gb ssd
drive3: 2tb WD blue

I will replace my old i5 2500k, 8gb DDR3 ram which I bought in 2011 with the new Ryzen7. Are there major differences for mainboards in regards to manufacturers? I always bought Asus in the past simply because I never had problems with their hardware and it never broke down for me. The only reason I chose a mainboard in the price range of 140-160 bucks was to have USB-C, just in case for some future shit that might come up that I can't think about right now. Or is this Asus mainboard a major "no go" because the other manufacturers offer way better things?

And in terms of Ram, I heard the Ryzen benefits from faster Ram but also heard of compatibility problems between fast Ram and current mainboards. Does it make sense to go beyond DDR4 3200? I basically want my pc to last again 5-6 years like the 2500k did, with an expected gpu upgrade needed in 3-4 years.

In terms of price: I don't really care as long as I don't go beyond 600 bucks for the 3 parts I need to buy.

WH2 ingame bench: Max 77 degrees
Realbench: Max 88 degrees
Prime95 26.6: Max 84 degrees
Intel Extreme Tuning Utility: Max 84 degrees

Searching on google tells me that 7700 even if it is not K runs pretty hot. Even at max RPM and load, I can't hear the fan so my only worry is how safe is it to use a CPU that sometimes goes up to 80 degrees.

Any advice?

Haven't used a desktop in ten years, but having three laptops slowly die on me, I've decided to build a pc. I was all set on this. Don't mind me not having an SSD, I have a samsung 840pro on my laptop that I intend to add. As for a monitor, I have a 1080p 24 inch which may be old, but does the job. Also, I'm on a quite tight budget, so trying to walk a tight rope of future proofing and bare essentials. Plan to upgrade GPU once the price drops. For now I just need solid 1080p performance.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pvYNhq

Now people say i5 is shit, and I should go either 7700k, or Ryzen.

I've never used AMD anything before. Only non nVidia/Intel part I've ever had was an S3 Savage 3d back in 1999. So I'm kinda skeptical.

Any help would be appreciated.

If there is not much difference I could buy 2 sticks of vengeance RGB to go with my current vengeance, saving ~£150-200.

My current rig was assembled in 2013, I have an FX-6300, MSI motherboard, 8 gigs of DDR3 ram, and R9 290. I used to be a hardcore AMD fanboy, but I am leaning towards Intel for a budget build because I probably won't be able to shell out for Ryzen and an AM4 board.

How much of an improvement would a Pentium G4560/4600 be? Single thread wise they should be faster, but they have less threads. I also thought about the i3-7350k which is more expensive but still dual core with HT. I want to go with an ATX board so I have more room.

Also, my friend is getting some old Pentium III machines from work. I'll probably try to use the old beige case from one of these because I love that aesthetic. Hopefully they don't have the floppy slot and just a regular 3.5" bay.

I would say that depends on the laws of the country. Here in Germoney the warrenty is also for the 2nd, 3rd etc owner of the card. Of course only until the 3 years are over, this won't be renewed everytime the card is sold to the next.

That's also a reason why I would pick the 1060, that still should have warranty compared to the 960 and 970.

That's stupid, it'll become absurdly unstable the higher the frequency is. You can't overclock much with default voltage, if any.

My PC fried itself yesterday, but I was looking to upgrade soon anyway.

Budget: About £2000 but would rather keep it closer to £1600

Would like to be able to run Nier and PubG without it being total fucking shit, possibly while streaming it using OBS. I intend to get a 144hz monitor regardless of this build and budget soon, currently rocking a 21inch 1080p 60hz and a 17inch 720p PoS.

Suggestions for similar quality parts at possibly lower prices, theory on if I need a new 4TB HDD when the 2TB HDD, which is almost full, of my old PC probably still works. Its a slow piece of shit though. Will the HSF I got actually fit? Will the GPU? The case in the build is actually not on sale anywhere, I put it in and priced it to the same make but red one.

If you'll get a RX 570 You can play at 1080p 60fps for two years. After those two years you can buy another GPU for 200 which will perform even better. By then you'll have a GPU which will probably outperform the 1070 and you can even sell your previous 570 voor decent dosh.

Googling for it gives a few suggestions relating to disabling/uninstalling your antivirus, .NET framework, etc, some hotfix from microsoft you have to install first, and some generic windows error scanning tools ("sfc /scannow", "windows update troubleshoooting"). Picked up a wine crate from Total Wine for something different than your everyday case until I find something I really like. Thing is, it's not exactly setup right away for proper airflow.

I was thinking one 140mm on the left and right side for intake with a 140mm exhaust on the rear side raised slightly higher. Pretty much where a exhaust fan usually is on a normal case if it was just laid down on it's side. GPU will have it's exhaust out of the connections side, PSU will not since I have a HDPLEX 400w ready to go. Should I aim for positive or negative pressure? Case will be easy to open up and clean (I'll use a couple hinges with the top portion) with the case being raised a good two or more feet off the ground, so dust isn't too much an issue but would be nice to cut down on that.

There's no sure way to troubleshoot all the problems you may have before building the thing. Google can help you find which components are compatible. In your case I'd do some research on that motherboard, to see if it agrees with your CPU, GPU, has M.2 support and stuff, etc. Also, you'll be doing cursory driver updates until your PC dies one day. HDDs may vary in terms of life expectancy, so I'd start saving for a new one, though SSDs are a safer bet. Beyond assembling the thing, assuming you can get it to boot, you'll have to play things by ear.
