How does one conquer the problem of WhatsApp (among other apps) notifications not arriving some times?

I had this problem on Marshmallow (CM13), and I still have it on Nougat (LineageOS). I've always had battery optimization turned off for WhatsApp.
On Marshmallow I "solved" it by using a Tasker plugin to check if WhatsApp process was running and notifying me when it died for whatever reason. This doesn't work on Nougat, because that Tasker plugin just sits there doing nothing at all.

The app appears to be alive and running (i.e. doesn't launch from zero like it's been completely dead) but notifications arrive only after opening it.

What do?

There's a hardware button on Galaxy S8. Samsung only wants it to be used for Bixby, their pathetic attempt at a voice assistant. Android Community wants to remap it to do useful things. The succeed, only to have that loophole be blocked in the next update.

Samsung has blocked them several times, and it's absolutely retarded.

nokia 7 with sd 660 and a 5 inch display when?
>>
>>61459343
That does sound stupid, I'd hate for my phone to have a button that only opened the google assistant. And I actually use that thing sometimes, and I feel that way. Reminds me a bit of years back when some company made a facebook phone. Literally an android phone where the central hardware button was a facebook button. Let you do shit like share pictures or whatever to facebook. Totally pointless to exist, considering it's something any phone can do anyway. At least that phone people knew to steer away from. Way worse to put a big fuck you button on your flagship phone. Speaking of, when is Samsung going to stop making mistakes with their phones? Seems like the last 3 or whatever have caught fire and blown up, now they intentionally piss off the community by forcibly making hardware buttons useless? I'd say GG, but they're too big to fail from these mistakes.

This but I'd prefer a 5.5" screen
>>
>>61459849
Ahh, they look different than I remember, I mistakenly believed the facebook button was the center one. That's actually less atrocious than I remember, to some degree. Still though. Idk about anybody else, but I find using a voice assistant to actually perform a task is generally more of a pain in the ass. Only really useful in my book for creating reminders and asking what today's forecast is. Every time I try to do anything else, like using it to control my music playback, instead of, say, playing music when I say "play [artist name]", it just does a literal google search for the words "play [artist name]". 2017 and voice assistants still have at least 5 years to go before they're remotely reliable.
>>
>>61459801
Last few Samsung's I've had bring people bring me to setup email had cracks or scratches in the screen, is it that edge shit or did they skimp on the gorilla glass?
>>
>>61459343
Bixby actually isn't awful, they just pushed it out for US users, and despite the button mishaps and the fact it's still kinda rough sometimes, i think it has a lot of potential, and they're getting there

>>
>>61459991
Gorilla glass is known to scratch, and modern Galaxy s phones have gorilla glass. Edge screen doesn't help when it comes to cracks, too
>>
>>61459991
Hard to say, did any of them have cases on them? I've dropped my 6P probably more times than I can count, some with no case, most with a case on. Screen is flawless to this day. So either these guys are dropping it facedown on pavement with no case, or the gorilla glass is shit.

This is why I never buy Samsung, or any massive brand these days. They try to shove their garbage down your throat with no option because they know best.

Look at the Zuk Z2 button. You can swipe left or right on it to go previous/next app, pressing it once goes home, pressing it twice goes to the recent apps screen, and you can change the function of everything.

I want a giant phone with decent battery life, an OLED display, good custom ROM support, a headphone jack, wireless charging, and software control keys that works for at the very least calls and texts on Sprint and Verizon. Cellular data not working is not a deal breaker, I don't really use it. My budget is $300. I feel like the Nexus 6 is the perfect phone for me, and I can get a slightly used 64GB for like $200 or an open box and never used/used once unit for close to $300. What do you guys think?

Hey /g/ents, fa/tg/uy here

My Samsung S5 just had its display shit the bed and Im looking to replace. Budget is kinda tight so my first guess is just re-buying the S5 because its been a good phone and one of the cheaper options. I have a little bit of wiggle room, and was wondering if hopping up to a S6 (or any other "last gen" phone) was worth it.

My plan is just swapping out the SIM card and going from there, but do you guys have any alternative recommendations as Im not tied to a brand in any real way as long as I can just hot-swap the SIM.
>>
>>61462256
Mine was a G4, my friend lost his G5. Admittedly my friend with a V20 hasn't had any issues, but at least my trust in them is still shakey since the G4 and G5 bootloops didn't really start until later in the phone's lifespan
>>
I think I am having an existential crisis here.

Here's the deal.

>Always been as updated as one can be.
>HTC one m7 to z3 compact to nexus 5x
>Get to android 7.x.x and love the feel.
>Mess up phone software and get it stuck on twrp screen
>Whatever
>Get old HTC desire 516 stuck on android 4.3.
>After less than 2 hours absolutely fall in love with the feel of old android.

Am I going insane here? I love android and what google has been doing with it but it feels so comfortable here.
I gave up raw photos, 1080p display, a good camera, mid to high internals etc but it's so nice.

I was gonna buy some chinkshit phone with android 6 or 7 but I can't for the life of me justify the purchase anymore. It's too nice here in Jellybean land.
>>
>>61462287
The S6 doesn't have many of the nice features the S5 has like removable battery, expandable storage, water resistance or TV out. Battery life is worse too. IMO the S6 is not worth it at all.
>>
>>61462372
>Whatever

It feels so damn smooth here and I can't figure out why.
>>

Considering you can purchase one for 250 bucks in a very good condition in general its a great device. Beautiful screen, (almost) lag free, still very relevant hardware. Camera is fantastic in my opinion. It's also sturdy as fuck - dropped the glass sandwich numerous times on concrete and not a single crack whatsoever (obviously there are dents in the alu frame). Everything just works and quite nicely at that. I feel no need to upgrade in the near future as its still capable of doing everything smoothly.

The only issue is the battery which after 2 years of use cannot hold a charge for the entire day (usually i run out of juice at around 7 o clock in the evening with the day starting at 7am.

What's a decent phone that works on CDMA for 500~ USD? I've been on a nexus 6p for a while and there doesn't seem to be anything that would be too big of an upgrade that isn't out of my price range.

Hey I need some advice on what to purchase
I would like to get a tablet, not necessarily a phone. Sim capability isn't important to me since I plan on using this as a dedicated music media station for my car. My main concern is that it has a fast boot up time and a micro sd card slot.
I don't need a specific carrier
I don't have a budget, I'll be getting what is best for the job.
Size; it shouldn't be too big but a mini-tablet to tablet size. ie. 5"x 7" screen is sufficient.

also if this sounds like a bad idea let me know why
>>
>>61460634
What the fuck is wrong with you?
>>
>>61469070
If you want a fast boot time, you have to get something with support for Nougat. I just upgraded my phone from Marshmallow, and holy fuck the boot time is like two thirds shorter.
That's all advice I can give.

Is there any paticular reason why androids and other phones are so slow to boot? I understand they use flash memory and I have an ssd in my laptop and it is 20 seconds max.
every phone I've ever had was a minute at least. Is the flash in phones just lower quality or what because I know for sure that the os isn't bigger.

Is MIUI horribly bloated?
>>
>>61470085

>>
>>61470107
Depending on your perspective.

If you enjoy AOSP and like to be in charge of your system (e.g. decide what gets access to the network using AfWall+, control wake-ups/services with Amplify, etc.) then you're going to have a bad time with MIUI.
I tried wrestling with it, it becomes a shit show. Things randomly stop and start working once you try to stop all the data collection with a firewall.

The only MIUI flavor that I find acceptable is custom ROMs that have all that shit ripped out. For example, I was close to installing Masik on my Mi5 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/development/rom-masik-miui-aroma-installer-t3618476), because it claimed to fix many annoyances and also made some improvements on the MIUI experience. But I just went with LineageOS and I'm quite happy with it.

Hey, can I ask for a bit of tech support here?

Dad recently got secondhand S7 Edge for a cheap price, UK version. Worked fine for a few days then started freezing. Like, really bad. Hard reboot, sometimes screen stays black and won't turn on for a while. Once got hit with a bootloader exception.

I know what the first step is, so before you say it here are the things I HAVE tried:
>safe mode
>wipe cache
>factory reset from recovery mode
>using odin to flash the latest stock firmware
>using odin to flash the latest stock firmware but for a different region

So at this point I'm stumped. If both a factory reset and flashing the latest stock rom don't fix the problem, I'm worried this is a hardware problem and my dad got fucked by the seller. Any tips?

I've been using a note 4 I got off ebay for a while. It was unlocked from AT&T but because of their software restrictions I had a hell of a time figuring out how to update to any firmware in the last 8 months. OS aside though, the ongoing GPS problems I've been told are somewhat commonplace with the note alongside what feels like an aging phone has me looking elsewhere for a newer phone. Budget isn't too tight but I'd like to stay under $700 ish, keep the 5"+ screen size and preferably avoid "upgrading with minimal improvements". Can /spg/ offer some advice? I've been looking at the Oneplus 5, zenfone 3 and LG V20 but they haven't quite sold me (Based on what I know of phones. The improvements don't seem tremendous)

I flashed whatever this is:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/how-to/official-stock-firmware-update-odin-t3335065

I also downloaded and flashed H3G-G935FXXS1DQF2 (the same firmware but the Three Mobile UK version, it was originally using the Three Mobile version) from a different place.

Some background, it was a UK model from Three Mobile that used to be on a plan that was paid off and is now unlocked, confirmed when I put in my sim card and tried calling with it before we bought it. It was originally on 6.0.1. After one freeze I updated it through the settings menu to the latest 6.0.1. It then asked to upgrade to Nougat which I declined. Then the freezing got really bad and frequent. The Nougat upgrade was flashed from the sources above using Odin via download mode. My dad read somewhere that google play store sometimes causes problems so we installed whatever the latest version we could find of that via .apk. At the time the phone was freezing often when wifi was connected and the google play store enabled, but worked when it was in airplane mode. For a time after installing the latest play store version the phone worked fine, but just last night and now today it started freezing again and won't turn on (it's happened before, hard reboot to a black screen and the phone won't turn on until some time later).

Is there anything else I can try? Did I flash the wrong thing?

N900A user here.

Unlock bootloader if needed and flash a rooted/deknoxed ROM of your choice from XDA (I use FireKat). Ignore the safety concerns about rooting, all ROMs for a phone that old are insecure anyway.

Sideload whatever you want but use the Play Store to update apps. Don't use Aptoide unless you know what you're doing, it'll try to update apps to version that are incompatible with your phone and will cause a shit ton of crashes. Get smaller, faster versions of common apps from F-Droid, they'll keep the phone from slowing down too much.

Then get a new phone as soon as possible, Note 3 a shit

Well, as I said I already flashed the stock rom with Odin while in downloading mode. The bootloader exception error I got out of by letting the battery run dry.

The problem is it keeps freezing requiring a reboot, even after factory reset and flashing the stock rom. Right now it won't even turn on at all after the latest freeze, I think it might be fucked.
>>
>>61473566
>>61474161
Actually, thanks for that picture. I managed get it out of being dead using power+vol down+ home for a longer period of time, it rebooted normally.

I can get it into download mode no problem, but I've already used Odin to flash two different regions of the latest stock rom and it's still freezing. I just want it to stop freezing, or at least know if this is a hardware or software problem given that it persists even after factory reset and flashing stock rom.

I've heard their customer service is so-so, but that's how it is, the best company for it is HTC, can you get a used HTC 10 from the states? That way you wouldn't pay more than $350

Far less fragile then the s8 I think, no touchjizz

Also has stereospeakers. Also the nice 960 fps gimmick sounds cool if you make a lot of videos. I prefer Sony's design overall compared to the other phones too.

Good that it worked in some way. Have you tried starting it in safe mode?

1. Press and hold the Power key.
2. When Samsung Galaxy S7 logo appears, release the Power key and immediately hold the volume down key.
3. Continue holding the Volume Down key until it finishes its rebooting.
4. When “Safe mode” appears on the screen immediately release the Volume Down key.

In that way, you can rule out if it is an app that is causing the freezing.
>>
Why do indians love phones so much?
>>
>>61475291
Firstly, I said in my first post that I tried that among other things.

Secondly, would a rogue app really cause this after I already did a factory reset and flashed a stock rom?
>>
>>61475424
Ah ok, my bad.
Have you tried waiting for the battery to empty?
>>
>>61475504
I don't think you understand my problem. The phone is able to function normally, since I got it to reboot normally it is now functioning fine.

My problem is that randomly, after using it for a while, moreso when it is connected to wifi, the phone freezes. It locks up and does not respond to input, forcing a hard reboot. Sometimes the hard reboot messes up and I get a black screen crash but I can eventually get out of it.

I want the freezing to stop.

Things I have tried (repeated again):

- Safe mode
- Factory reset
- Using Odin and Download mode to flash latest stock rom

Even after these things the phone is still prone to freezing occasionally. It was working fine for the last two days or so then froze once yesterday and now once today.

Any thoughts on blackberry priv?
I just want to use it as general phone, not gaming or social stuff, but what keeps me from other blackberry phones is that i really need to use whatsapp.

Also battery seems nice and has physical keyboard
>>
>>61476098
Yo dude you seem to know about Whatsapp. What do you do with it? It makes calls and texts while connected to wifi. Is it possible to buy a phone and have absolutely no service plan on it at all, and just use Whatsapp to make calls? The only situation that would stop me from doing this is emergencies where I would be stranded on the road.
>>
>>61476120
WhatsApp accounts are tied to phone numbers. So any time you log into your account you need to enter the code that is sent via SMS to the phone number that you used to register with. So you can do it once and just back up WhatsApp app (with TitaniumBackup, for example) to never lose the login data, or hope you never get logged out for whatever reason.

Aside from that, sure.
>>
>>61476120
Yeah you can do that, still need a phone number for initial setup and verification
>>
>>61476120
Yes, just get a pre-paid chip since you need a phone number to activate whatsapp
>>

>A little pricier indeed but still way cheaper than Samshit or HTC
S8 and OP5 street prices are literally the same
>>
>>61475576
Ok, now I understand.
If it keeps freezing after you have wiped cache and then a factory reset in that order, the phone probably is fucked in some way.

What I find weird is that you say that it worked for some days after you bought it. That speaks against broken hardware.

>>
>>61476439
Yeah, it worked a few days after purchasing and was working for the past few days after I installed the latest google play store since I read somewhere that might be a problem, only started freezing again yesterday out of nowhere.

It's what's making it so frustrating, it's not consistent. At one point it was freezing so often I couldn't even set up the phone after a factory reset. It generally doesn't freeze when airplane mode is enabled, then all of a sudden it was fine and worked perfectly well for a few days before it froze again. Is this a hardware problem? If it's a software problem, why is it still happening after a factory reset and on different firmware versions?
>>
>>61476839
I do not remember if you have answered this: Is it freezing while in safe mode too?

About the broken before buying theory: I would have been nervous if I let the buyer try the phone if I knew it was randomly freezing. Also, I do not know how a sell wipe would have broken the phone either.
